The rust effect takes several hours, but works really well with the iron pigment paint

I took a long shot on this one hoping I could distress some tiles I painted with a copper paint. It worked to a point but not enough. I think you need paint with enough metal particles that aren’t covered with the varnish within the paint for it to work. Fortunately I tested it off the wall. So, check the composition of your paint if you don’t want to wing it!

This product performs as expected when used with MM Metal Effects Oxidizing Iron Paint. Beautiful!

The whole Modern Masters line of oxidizing paints is a playground for rust enthusiasts! The company's iron, bronze, and copper base paints use oxidizing agents to create true rust as well as green and blue verdigris patinas on wood, metal, and other surfaces. I've found that temperatures and other environmental factors influence the speed and degree of oxidation created, so there's always some guesswork involved in using these paints. But the advantages far exceed any small challenges. I've used all of the company's oxidizing paints for years on many projects and I consider them simply great!
