Schlage Electronic Keypad Lock, Lever Handle, Camelot Trim, Satin Chrome

Absolutely LOVE this lock. I do Airbnb and I needed an easy (no key exchange) way to give people access to the house if I am not home. I purchased several other similar locks and returned them to the local hardware store after the frustration around trying to get them installed. And to change the battery in the future I would have to go through it again. I am not a handy man/woman but I am pretty good at this kind of stuff and I found this lock to be so friggen EASY to install, no wires to connect, no jostling holes to line up. Seriously, take out your old one, put the battery in the unit, installs in about three steps. If you have ever installed new door knobs, this is actually easer. I waited to write this review as I wanted to see how it held up. I have now had the original one on my front door for about 8 months. (it is under a covered patio so it does not get direct rain or sun) I do change the Airbnb codes often but we have a main code for everyone who lives here. With it used daily for over 8 months it has held up magnificently. I love the fact it auto locks after 5 sec as I have had my house left unlocked over night or all day when a guest forgot to lock the door when they left (when I had a regular flip lock). I change the Airbnb code often and I keep an eye on the main code to be sure the numbers are not getting worn. They are holding up as far as I can see. I just purchased another one for the main Airbnb bedroom door as it just had a privacy lock on it and I wanted guest to be able to lock their door when they left their luggage behind. I also like the fact the code it super easy to change and I have a back up key lock incase of any issues. AND I don't have to manage giving and getting keys from guests. I did a lot of research and for the price this unit is excellent for my use. I am going to purchase another one for the other rooms in the house. I hope you find it as great as I do.

I have only had my Schlage FE-595 for a few weeks, but I am extremely happy with it so far. As explained in the review by Fred, it is very easy to install the lock – no harder than a standard mechanical lock. The only part that is a bit fussy is making sure that the wires are tucked into the plastic back plate so that they are not pinched when the interior potion is screwed on tightly. I did, however, have a frustrating, amusing and educational experience with this model. All the doors in our house use Schlage locks and deadbolts, which are all keyed alike. I initially ordered my lock from a major home improvement retailer, so that I could have it rekeyed to match. I went to the hardware department, and the two gentlemen working at the time looked at it and said they had never attempted to rekey one of these locks. They said they would leave it for Dale, who knew the most about locks. When I arrived later in the day I met up with Dale, who had not been asked to rekey anything. We spent about 15 minutes searching for the lock until he found it under the service desk. As it turned out, it had already been rekeyed, so I went home to install it. After I installed the lock in the door I discovered that the door would not lock at all. I took it off and reinstalled it, to no avail. Assuming that the gents who had rekeyed the lock had failed to reassemble it correctly, I returned to the store when Dale was working. He opened the lock and several components fell out. Although we both laughed about it, I had to return the lock and order a replacement. When the replacement arrived I once again met with Dale and watched him rekey it. Although he knew how to rekey the cylinder, it was clear he didn’t really understand how the mechanism worked. He tried not to disturb anything, although he was still forced to try to align certain parts that seemed liked they should be more secure. Installing the new lock at home, I discovered that this time I had a lock that was perpetually locked – neither the key or the programmed codes would unlock it. It also rattled when I shook it, which seemed like a sure sign it was improperly assembled. I thought this couldn’t possibly be rocket science and decided to completely disassemble and reassemble the lock. After 3 or 4 tries I still did not have a working lock and decided to give up. While cleaning up and getting ready for bed I noticed a small spring on the floor and shortly thereafter happened to read Mark Hornig’s review. Eureka – I now know what was missing and how to assemble to mechanism. Everything worked properly now, but the lock made more noise than I thought it should. I was certain that at least one component had become bent under Dale’s or my attempts to reassemble the unit. You will note that Mark Hornig’s locks had also been rekeyed, and I suspect that the folks who did his were only slightly smarter than those who worked on mine. I decided to order a third lock from Amazon. When it arrived, I disassembled the older lock to remove the cylinder. I then carefully disassembled the new lock without disturbing the mechanism and swapped out the cylinder. I reassembled the new lock and installed it; voilà – it worked flawlessly. I then returned the old lock to the home improvement chain. My conclusions are as follows: 1) The lock itself works well. 2) If you can use the key that comes with the lock, the installation is a piece of cake. 3) If you want it rekeyed, there is a high probability it will not be reassembled properly and will either not work at all or will fail in the near term when a component that was not properly installed works itself loose. As Schlage does not seem to provide instructions, this is what I have learned about how to replace the cylinder if you want to rekey the lock: 1) Carefully remove the four Torx screws while holding the lock so that front and back do not separate. 2) Place the lock so that the outside is facing up. As the spindle will protrude from the underside, you will need to either be working at a table or bench with a hole ,or holding the lock in your lap with the spindle between your legs. 3) Gently lift off the outside of the lock, making sure everything (including the buttons) remain seated on the underside portion. The cylinder is the only component attached to the outside of the lock. 4) A simple screw holds the cylinder in place, which can easily be removed to rekey the lock. 5) After the cylinder has been reinstalled, gently place the outside of the lock on the inner portion, being careful not to jostle any of the components. 6) Hold the two pieces tightly together until the Torx screws are fully tightened. We use these Schlage keypad locks on the front and side gates, four dive lockers, and the entry door to one of our rental houses in the Caribbean. The original locks lasted over 7 years in a harsh tropical environment - sun, salt, rain, and dust - and that reliability is why we continue to buy them. We think they are a great value. Programming guest codes is quick and easy, and the lock holds up to 19 codes. If it reaches the limit, you can simply clear them and start fresh. We love that the keypad lights up at night, and once unlocked, the handle must be turned within seconds or it relocks automatically which is an excellent feature that keeps our property secure without worrying about guests forgetting to lock up. The matte black finish looks great, and the lock feels solid, neither too light nor too heavy and very durable and well made. Battery changes are simple, and the convenience of not having to carry or replace lost keys is a huge plus for both us and our guests. Highly recommend these locks for anyone that doesn't want to use keys.

Okay, I just learned from the pictures on this website that I can change it from an auto lock to manual lock. I love being able to walk out the door without locking the door. I just check it each time to make sure it is locked. One of the biggest problems I had with the installation is that immediately upon removing the handle set from the box I inserted the key for fit. DO NOT DO THIS! I HAD A HELLUVA TIME GETTING THE KEY BACK OUT OF THE CHAMBER. IT SAYS IN THE SMALL PRINT THAT YOU CAN ONLY USE THE KEY ON A DEAD HANDSET. I am a landlord and have changed tons of lock sets and I am sorry, but it is just human nature to test the key. I would appreciate a better dissertation from Schlage on this issue since the stuff I read about actually using the key, further muddied the issue of how and when the key works and how exactly you do get the key out if you do like I did and put it in the lockset after hours when schlage is not there to answer their phone. I think schlage needs to put the keys in an envelope with a warning. This added about 2 hours to my installation time, since I wasn't going to be able to install a handset with the key on the outside still in the door. PROBLEMATIC AT THE VERY LEAST. The other thing that schlage could do to make installation easier is to color code the electrical connection. perhaps white on one side, and black on the other. THis would alleviate any anxiety about trying to connect backwards and damaging the pins. The unit itself is very easy to install. There is a screw that they have installed that is supposed to make for handsfree installation. I simply taped the outdoor side to the door because that screw being extended did not really hold it into place very well for me. ONE OTHER BIG TIP. MAKE SURE THAT YOU SAVE THE CODES SOMEWHERE THAT YOU WILL NOT LOOSE THEM. FILL OUT THE PAPERWORK THAT COMES WITH THE LOCKSET ABOUT THE CODES YOU ADD AND THE PROGRAMMING CODE. KEEP A COPY IN YOUR SAFE DEPOSIT BOX AT THE BANK IF YOU HAVE TO. THESE CODES ARE SERIOUSLY IMPORTANT BECAUSE THE COMPANY CANNOT GET THEM FOR YOU IF YOU LOOSE THEM. PUT THEM IN A FILE, SEND THEM TO YOURSELF. KEEP THEM AT THE OFFICE. PUT THEM WITH YOUR WILL. I AM SAVING MY CODES TO MULTIPLE PLACES SO THAT I CAN RETRIEVE THEM FROM MYSELF IF I NEED TO. LABEL THE KEYS AND STORE THEM IN A SAFE PLACE ALSO. I HAVE CONSIDERED HAVING ONE MADE AND ACTUALLY CARRYING ONE BUT DON'T SEE THE NEED SINCE I HAVE TWO OF THESE LOCKSETS ON MY HOUSE AND CAN'T SEE THEM BOTH DYING AT THE SAME TIME. IF BATTERY LIFE IS NOT LONG I WILL BE VERY DISSAPOINTED.

A real quality lock. Easy and natural to install. Everything has the look and heft of being well made and engineered. I really appreciate the unlocking sequence. Four numbers and it's open! A BIG plus is the manual inside lock and unlock knob. This item does not compare with the 39-dollar wonders that are junk! Why then four stars? After years of use I have had individual numbers fail. They just fall off. In the past a call to Schlage and they were replaced. No Charge. Now it seems you can no longer speak to a person; they can only be e mailed and then you're ignored.

I read the reviews and for the most part they were great. I wasn't going to spend quite this much, but I didn't want a $25 lock either. I'm very happy I made the choice to get this lock. My son (14 years old) helped me install it - more like he held the tools for me because it was over within 20 minutes. Would have been quicker but I'm particular about the details so I move slowly. The only issue with installation that I had was getting the wires out of the way once I had the battery in place - but after a moment it became pretty logical how to place them. Programming it was a breeze, the instructions are very good for this. It took my son longer to decide what 4-digit code he wanted than it took me to program the entire thing otherwise. The locks are very nice looking (I got the Satin Nickel finish) and look like they're going to last a long time. The lighted keypad is nice and bright, and shines in a pleasant blue color as well. I have a standard door with a standard doorknob set up in it and this fit perfectly. The replacement plates were even nice quality, very solid. I've been using this for a month now and it's still working perfectly. When I have to replace the battery it seems like it should take maybe 10 minutes to do so - not bad whatsoever. I like that the inside handle works independently from the outside handle - so you can have it set up where it's locked from the outside but not from the inside (no more unlocking your door to leave your house, unless you're using a deadbolt or chain of course). Also I tested the key and it worked great too - may sound silly but it felt very solid and well made as well. Being able to program several codes is great - I have one code specifically that I can hand out to friends or neighbors if ever there's a reason to have them go into my house when I'm not home. Then I can easily change it if I need to afterward, without changing my own code. I would recommend this lock to anyone - it really is high quality and adds a neat little piece of technology to your life as well. Update, 1/8/13: A few months shy of 3 years of daily use (this is on my main outside door), and the original battery hasn't even worn out yet. There is no wear on the buttons (which would show which ones were hit the most often) - that's very important to me. I keep the instruction manual handy in the drawer because I've needed to create a new code a couple of times (and remove them later) for friends and the dog sitter to use. This is absolutely a 5-star product!

Put this on our main door so when our family come they can come right in. Have had it on for six months and works great’. Definitely was a good purchase for us.

Looks great on our front door! Very sturdy door handle. Easy to install and set a code. Gets a lot of use at a rental property and has held up well.

This is the 4th of these locks I have had. All worked perfectly right out of the box. Everything needed to install (even a battery) came in the package. The installation process is not exactly dirt simple, but it's pretty close. Took me 30 minutes.

This lockset was easy to install and easy to program. Excellent quality workmanship good value.

Nice looking product. Love the antique pewter Color. However this model locks every time you close the door. This could be a pain in the behind for some as it has no mechanism to override. I should have read the description closer. My fault . I ordered a different one after with the override and used this one on my garage door which is less used.

I purchased this electronic lockset to replace an existing lockset and handle on a friend's front door. He needed a coded door lock to accommodate a newly built basement Air BnB suite and the hundreds of positive reviews and favorable price made this my first choice. The install was as simple as removing the old lockset and fitting the new one into its place. Literally four screws and the job was complete. The feel and quality of this new lock is exceptional and it looks great too. The operation and programming of the electronic lock is also very simple. I am ordering a second one to use at my own home.
