why did this machete go up so much in price?

any one cut large bamboo?

I have not, but I have chopped three or four inch tree limbs with it. It doesn't cut straight through, but takes a few cuts.

would this be a good knife for chopping wood?

Yes as long as the wood is not to thick. Best for chopping 1 or 2 inch branches for firewood or for splitting already cut wood. It is not heavy enough to fully replace a good camping hatchet and definitely will not take the place of an axe. The design of the blade though makes it a much better chopper than a heavy hunting knife or a large Bowie knife. I take mine camping as as a combo light hatchet and heavy knife just keep in mind really large branches will take time and arm power.

anyone tried cutting black bamboo?

No black, only green bamboo in my backyard. But it does cut through it well, as long as you have a decent edge on the blade and you don't try to strike right at the nodes.
