Position Pieces for Cello is designed to give students a logical and fun way to learn their way around the fingerboard. Each hand position is introduced with exercises called Target Practice," "Geography Quiz," and "Names and Numbers." Following these exercises are tuneful cello duets that have been specifically composed to require students to play in that hand position. In this way, students gain a thorough knowledge of how to find the hand positions, and once there, which notes are possible to play. Using these pieces (with names like "I Was a Teenage Monster," "The Irish Tenor," and "I've Got the Blues, Baby"), position study on the cello has never been so much fun!" Review: Fantastic cello position learning book. - My son's Suzuki cello teacher recommended this book to help learn the varous cello positions. It has worked out quite well. Each position starts out with figuring out the notes and fingerings which are then followed by several peices to practice each position. They're even fun to play. The pieces can be a little challenge, at least for our 9 year old, as sometimes there is a little more music reading to be learned, which his teacher helps with. Depending on your level, you may need a little help to progress throught the book. You can also find people playeach each of the pieces online if you look, so at least you know how it each piece should sound. Review: Good for learning the different Cello positions - For example 2nd position. - My Cello instructor recommended this book, so I bought it. I bought it awhile back, but we are just now getting to the different cello positions. Right now I have only worked on the first 3 pages which is practicing the 2nd position. I started taking Cello lessons one year and four months ago. First I had to learn to read music (since I had never played an instrument in school or even learned about music). By the way, I started this at the age of 63, so it just goes to show, you are never to old or young to do something you like. :o)

Great book!
I searched for many years for a book to teach my students shifting. This is the one! It is a shifting bible for the first four positions. My students shift in tune and understand the notes in a position across strings.

Great exercise book for intermediate cello students
My daughter is in middle school and has played cello for four years. She just got a private teacher because she’s struggling with learning to shift. He recommended this book and they have been playing their way through all the exercises. There is good variety, just challenging enough, the pieces are pleasant to listen to. No complaints.

Love this book, but DONT buy the Kindle version
I am a cello teacher, and I absolutely LOVE this book for teaching positions. The warmups alone are worth the price. I even practice them myself. My qualms are with the digital format. I recently replaced my print copy with the Kindle version with the intention of using my ipad, and I have a huge issue with it. It's formatted all wrong. The title to each piece is at the bottom of the previous page. I realize this is probably automatically formatted, but that leads me to think sheet music should not be available for kindle, but rather a PDF download.

Best I've found!
I will try not to reiterate what the other reviewers said, except for this, this book is great for those just beginning to shift. What I personally found much more useful than I expected was the writing exercises before you begin playing. It all looks so very amateurish and "kid stuff" when you see it online but I've found that it is more difficult that you would think; as well as preparing you for actually thinking about which note is which when you start playing the exercise instead of just playing it blindly. I found that the "new" songs were more helpful than replaying old familiar tunes. A new song made me *listen* for the tone, as well as think about where I was placing my fingers on the fingerboard. It is very good ear training to learn with unfamiliar songs. The book increases difficulty at a very good pace, most importantly, it doesn't move on too quickly. There is opportunity to practice what you've learned in different styles. My confidence is increasing as I move through this book and I have found that small boost I needed to navigate outside of my beginning comfort zone into the wider broader world of an intermediate student.

A must have !
Love it, love it, love it. Learning shifting and positions in other books is sooooo boooooring. This book makes it enjoyable. Fun fact : you learn a lot faster when you actually practice, and you practice a lot more when practice is something fun you actually look forward to do every day...

Wirklich gut für das Üben der Lagen. Mal leicht, mal anspruchsvoll.
