3 hrs run on 4 AA rechargeables in D adapters on full output,30 hrs total runtime, not blinding then folded, orange led nighlight
Solid, comfortable to handle and carry, non water-resistant (would be perfect, if it was water resistant, as this lantern, then folded, provides much more useable forward illumination, that is shining and illumiaating mostly forward and is not blinding to your eyes, as comparing to regular Energizer 360 water-resistant Aa/D size lantern or Coleman CPX 6 Easy Hanging LED 200 lumen 4-D-size lantern) lantern, accepts four D size batteries. Sufficiently bright, not as bright as my old Coleman CPX 6 Easy Hanging LED 200 lumen lanter, but is lighter, more comfortable to carry, shines forward if folded and does not blind you, and will suffice in most conditions of NYC apartments. Energizers' lanters are the only lanters utilizing an ingenious one small led night light ( you have 8 white led and 1 orange night light led inside, and can cycle full brighness/low/nightlight). That nightlight led makes sure in complete darkness you are always aware of the environment, location of the lantern, and is great for kids to not get them scared in complete blackout - very useful feature, often overlooked by reviewers. If you have small children, most of them are afraid of the darkness, this is the one to get to use with them, or another Energizer lantern with the same orange led nightlight feature, there are several of them, like Energizer 360 lantern, all are very good. Very affordable, excellent value. Highly recommend. I had bought 3 of them, and 2 solar models of this same lantern. Update on non-power regulated voltage : I had found out from NLee the Engineer review this lantern is not power regulated voltage, meaning the lantern will use the batteries faster and inefficient, but I guess for the price of this lantern is not to be expected. I will try the lantern longevity with Eneloops Pro or Amazon Basics High-Capacity inside D-size adapters (2 AA inside one D-adapter), once batteries will go through break in mode on Skyrc NC2500 charger. I live in NYC in Zone A, so I am stacking up just in case. Update for AA rechargeable batteries use: Runtime when using AA rechargeable batteries, Amazon Basics High-Capacity, confirmed discharge capacity 2450+ MAh, with a D adapter (1 rechargeable per adapter loaded for testing purposes, so 4 AA rechargeables total) on high is 3 hours full-light-output, after initial 3 "bright" hours it is dimmer and dimmer, useful to somewhat 2 feet-away-illumination around it for another 12 hours, and is on for next 15 hours, useful only as a night light. Will update with 8 batteries (2 per adapter) and for low light output longevity later.

Work, eat, read by the "folding area" lantern
Updated review: 2/13/2013 - PRICE HAS COME DOWN OVER $5 TO A MANAGABLE $19.88 - but make sure you spend another $5 or so to get the free shipping this is sold by amazon. Everyone should have more than one type of emergency lighting in a family to cover all your needs. Original review: Start off - not cheap, not cheap in price (cost), NOT cheaply made either. You get your monies worth but it takes a few uses to get the full effect & benefits. The upright front facing light (bulbs) at first seem like poor design, however, since it has significant weight to it when you lift the front to expose the doublesided lighting it doesn't tip over (which you might think will happen) but DOES NOT. It is VERY stable. When it is lifted completely upright and vertical it lights up a small/medium sized room, but many more reasonably priced lanterns do that too (I own a few by energizer). For TASK or AREA lighting it is GREAT - place on dinner table and lift half way up (in an inverted L) it lights the table beautifully. You can read by it in the same manner. The bulbs are bright and can affect your eyes so the lifting of the bulbs to a more upward angle is the best position for really close work. It does have a reflective mirror backing behind the bulbs when closed it makes it reflective enough if above your head on a cabinet or frig to cast a fairly bright light out forward, but casts shadows so close work is impossible (like meal preparation or hygene issues). This lantern is not a universal light or lantern you'd rely on alone but is an excellent companion to other emergency lighting used for general illumination. Battery compartment is behind the mirror and what gives it the weighted stand needed to open the light up, be careful turning the plastic screws on the mirror backing when changing batteries. Added bonus: Girls a good self defense item if you are alone in the dark - nice & heavy with a good grip if you need it! lol

Stan the Man Reviews: The Best of All Hurrican Lanterns.
I did not buy this lantern on Amazon but I have three of them which I picked up, at various times, at Lowe's when they were on sale for about a dollar more than the Amazon price. As far as I am concerned, this is THE lantern for hurricane country down here on the Gulf coast. I guess they sell well too because all the hardware stores seem to have a constant supply of them. They run on four D size batteries which are very secure. To access the battery compartment, you use a dime or small screwdriver to turn unlock type fixed in screws to the unlock position. Behind the main twin LED columns, which are exceptionally bright, there is a metal mirror which does a dandy job of projecting the light from the lantern forward if you are outside and night walking with it. You can also swing the light "tubes" upward and light will then come out of both sides of the tubes. This light is identical to a fluorescent type lantern that was sold before LEDs. I had the fluorescent lantern my dad had given me as a Christmas present and, for some reason, had never opened it but when the LED lantern came out, I gave the fluorescent one to a neighbor and we compared the output. The LEDs seemed as bright or even slightly brighter and will, of course, burn longer on the 4 D batteries. The little amber night light burns for over a week, I think, and it is dandy in motels as a nightlight to find your way to the bathroom. I keep one by the bed at home and switch the night light on when I have to go to the bathroom at night. I provides sufficient light when your eyes are night adjusted. The only down side, if you want to call it that, is that the Hi power and the Low power seem almost the same but, if the low power does make the battery pack last longer I guess that that is a good thing. Both high and low compare favorably to a Coleman butan lantern for camping and to a bright Coleman LED camping lantern I use. I imagine that butane lanterns are almost a thing of the past since the mantles are so fragile and the gas a bit dangerous. If you do live in storm country, you do NOT want to burn candles or oil lampts. In a Cat three hurricane like Ivan, your house would burn like an inferno if you had a fire. LED lights of every kind should have replaced anything with fire by now. I hear that they have revolutionized the third worl sine the battery life is good. I would recommend this lanter for anything you need a lantern or a six volt light for. The only thing it would not be good for was throwing out a high powered beam to search with though it will more than suffice for midnight navigations. The light has less glare than a Coleman camping LED though I like my Coleman too.

Convenient and simple
At first I thought it was rechargeable not sure why but when I received it I was a bit disappointed that I needed 4 D batteries. That took me couple days to try it because I was out of D batteries lol. I liked how simple it was to open and install batteries, VERY simple. Loved that. The light has 3 settings and is very useful for night light except for batteries not lasting. The medium light is great for closet searching or low lit areas. And the bright setting is great to light a large room if lights go out or for night camping or s late night outside activity. I love the lightweight feel and the handle is very comfortable and you can slightly open it ti firmly stand on it's own. I will definitely get alot of use from it. Thumbs up except the battery part. Rechargeable would be perfect. This was a free sample to review.

Great lantern, I highly recommend it
This energizer weather ready lantern is amazing. I am so glad I came across this lantern for so many great reasons. I really like how bright it gets and how it brightens up an entire room. It only takes 4 D batteries for it to work. It is best to use energizer max D alkaline batteries. The lantern allows you to use three different light settings one is a moon which is not bright, one is sun and gives more light off and one is extra bright. The lantern is also a water resistant lantern. which is amazing that you can use it in any weather rain or shine. The lantern stands up really well on its own it didn’t fall over and was well balanced in every position we put it in. The lantern also lights up on both sides so it can illuminate the room from front and back. I record it for free but I am buying a second one because it is that good. We have had bad storms, tornadoes ally the past couple years where I live. We had a lost Electric had needed light so bad besides having to use candles all the time. So this is a great item to have for us and I would like to have more than one so that we each have one in the home in case were in different rooms when the lights go out or one can be kept in the bathroom one in the living room. I highly recommend this lantern it’s amazing.

Great light, easy to use.
Easy to use. Emits great light in an emergency. I bought this one to replace one like it that we had used for years for unexpected power outages. I must remember to remove/replace batteries yearly to avoid battery leakage!

Best, brightest, more versatile lantern I ever bought...love it!
Having experienced power outages due to everything from ice storms to high winds to suicidal squirrels, we've learned the hard way the importance of having an emergency light source. We've bought all kinds of flashlights and lanterns in the past, but this is by far the best...best amount of light, best versatility, best length of battery time....will never again buy any other. It truly can light up an entire room. It's also now my go-to lantern while crawling through our dark attic...I used to need three other lanterns and this illuminates better than those three combined. Bought one several months ago and like it so much we bought more to give as Christmas gifts. Gave some to elderly relatives to have on hand if the power goes out, and they love them...and no more worries that they're stumbling in the dark with a little flashlight, or worse, burning candles for a source of light. I even leave ours at my desk to use at night whenever I need a little more light to see, and I don't have to worry that it's going to go through batteries quickly. And this will be perfect to use in the tent when camping this summer...nightlight setting when needed, or light up the whole tent!

Perfect for power outages and more.
Bought two of these lanterns to add to the one we’ve had for ten years. Loved in a smaller apartment then. Now in a bigger home we wanted a couple extra for other rooms.Great lantern for when power goes out. These two new ones have the added feature OG having a USB port for charging your phone. Also has a piece of glow in the dark tape so you can find it in the dark. Has three settings, nightlight, low and high. Unfolds to shine where you want. Definitely nice to have on hand.

Beyond my expectations!
This little lantern far exceeded my expectations! Lot of light, very practical design and tough. I drag it all over in a dirty rough crawl space.
