Goosebumps - Blu-ray + DVD

"Stephen King is no slouch," commented a member of the Movie Fan Facebook Page staff. The man has published 60 books, which have sold over 350 million copies. "Wait a minute," you say. "Why start a review of a movie based on R.L. Stine's books by talking about Stephen King?" Fair question. Well, Stine has been called "the Stephen King of children's literature." Beyond that, you may be surprised to learn that Stine has bested the famously prolific King by publishing hundreds of books, which have sold over 400 million copies! Think about that. It's enough to... give you goose bumps. That, of course, is the name of Stine's most popular series of books, brought to the big screen in the film "Goosebumps" (PG, 1:43). Fans of the series may wonder which of the books is the basis for the movie. The answer is none of them - and all of them. Rather than adapting any one of Stine's books, which are, admittedly, relatively short (as Stephen King exclaims, "Ah-HAH! See?"), this film imagines a world in which Stine's monsters come to life and terrorize a small town, while R.L. Stein himself, along with a few local teenagers, attempt to recapture the creatures and save the town. I won't spoil the movie, except to say that, in the end, we Movie Fans get a film that is as exciting and delightful as any of the books that inspired this story. The film has Jack Black portraying Stine as an unfriendly recluse in the tiny (fictional) town of Madison, Delaware. Showing Stine as a movie character which we get to know as a man, but is only a fictionalized version of the real person recalls movies like Charlie Kaufman's 1999 fantasy comedy-drama "Being John Malkovich" or Matthew LeBlanc (starting in 2011) playing himself as an adorable jerk in the Showtime comedy series "Episodes". Black's Stine calls himself Mr. Shivers. He's a widower who lives in a big house with his kind, but mischievous 16-year-old daughter, Hannah (Odeya Rush), whom he homeschools. Moving in right next door is Madison High School's new assistant principal, recently widowed Gale Cooper (Amy Ryan), and her teenage son, Zach (Dylan Minnette), still grieving the loss of his father. Gale's sweetly clueless sister, Loraine (Jillian Bell) greets them with open arms, but Zach and Gale simply have a lot of adjusting to do - and new people to meet. Gale is almost immediately hit on by shy fellow educator, Coach Carr (Ken Marino), while an awkward nerd ironically named Champ (Ryan Lee) traps the new guy into a friendship. It's a good thing for Zach that Hannah is such a pleasure to be around. One night when Zach looks towards his new neighbor's house and thinks he sees Mr. Shivers abusing Hannah, he calls Champ and they steal into the house. Zach and Champ see that Hannah's okay, but not before they find a key and open a locked "Goosebumps" manuscript among many on a shelf in Mr. Shivers' study. The book is "The Abominable Snowman of Pasadena" and unlocking the manuscript allows a large, furry creature to literally jump off the page. The three teens run after him, Hannah telling them that the monster can only be re-captured by sucking him back into the book from whence he came. The Abominable Snowman wreaks havoc on the town until Mr. Shivers shows up to save the day. In the destruction that the creature caused in the study, all the manuscripts fell to the floor and one of them popped open - one releasing the evil Slappy the Dummy. Slappy unleashes complete mayhem in Madison - on the night of a big high school dance nonetheless. The police (a hilarious Timothy Simons and Amanda Lund) are no help, but few people would be. That ventriloquist dummy serves as the ringleader of a gang of dangerous and destructive creations including a wolfman, a maniacal clown, a herd of garden gnomes and a gargantuan praying mantis. They all want revenge on their creator for keeping them locked up so long. And Stein is the only one who even has a chance of stopping them. When Stine's creations come to life, besides clear memories of Robin Williams' 1995 hit "Jumanji", this situation reminds us of Emma Thompson's author writing Will Ferrell's character into existence in 2006's "Stranger Than Fiction", or the underseen 1979 thriller "Time After Time" in which the character of H.G. Wells (author of the sci-fi classic "The Time Machine") uses profits from his writing to build a working time machine which one of his friends uses to escape the police and continue a killing spree when it is discovered that he's Jack the Ripper. "Goosebumps" deserves a place among these other great films. This film's story may not be completely original, but it feels fresh and it is fantastically well executed. All of the actors are perfectly cast (even Jack Black, who, in our opinion, seems to have had more misses than hits in his career). With the help of a story by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, a script by Darren Lemke and the direction of Rob Letterman, this cast and this story hit the perfect balance between frightening and fun - just like the "Goosebumps" books themselves. The script is very funny and the dialog and character interactions are charming from the very beginning to the very end of the movie. The interesting characters, the story's danger and adventure, along with the excitement and humor all seamlessly contribute to a simply wonderful family film that will appeal to kids of all ages, even if they don't know their goose bumps from their speed bumps or their Kings from their Stines.

I usually hate jack black in movies unless he is doing animation movies which he is really good at. But this movie he was not playing in animation. So i actually enjoyed his acting which never happens unless he is a panda in kung fu panda or something. But i actually found him funny for a change and that surprised me. I really compare him to will farewell which is another weird comedy style actor. Either way i guess once in a while they can make a movie and actually be enjoyable from time to time. This movies is great for the whole family. Its just a simple movie that has lots of comedy and is funny here and there. For me thats what i look for in a movie and i think jack black gave me exactly that. I would really recommend this movie to anyone that was a simple funny movie to watch with the family.

As a child, I become a huge fan of the Goosebumps series. I was constantly reading one book after another of these books. To me, they were an escape from reality with just the right combination of comedy and horror to appease my 8 year old self. I grew up also watching the goosebumps show and spinoff show so when I heard there was a movie my almost 30 year old self changed back into my 8 year old self and I become excited. I was weary that the movie wouldn't do justice to my beloved book series but it was perfect. It had all the more predominant characters from the series and although the little things didn't scare me as they did 22 years ago, I did find myself caught up in the twist and turns of the plot. I found myself laughing throughout the movie too. The characters seemed to bring out the best side of all the actors, much like they'd been made for each other. I was so grateful that I could bring my childhood love to the present to share with my kids. My boys aren't book lovers as I was once was but they become hypnotized by the storyline of the movie and watched quietly with the occasional laugh, jump or gasp. This movie was perfect.

As a writer, I sometimes get so invested in my characters that it's hard not to think of them as being alive. I have conversations with them while I'm writing - and before you say "that's crazy" let me assure you that this is not some rare mental illness. A lot of authors have similar conversations with their characters while they are working on a novel. But what if, one day, they really did come alive? That's the premise behind "Goosebumps" and it makes for a fun, kinda scary movie that you can watch with your children or - in my case - grandchildren. Featuring some awesome special effects, the movie stars Jack Black as author R.L. Stine, the creator of the "Goosebumps" books for kids and young adults. Black - who I first saw in an old X Files episode back in the day - does a nice job as the reclusive author trying to live quietly with his daughter Hannah, played by Odeya Rush. Things are fine until new neighbors move next door. Teenager Zach Cooper (played by Dylan Minnette) sees Hannah and they develop a clandestine friendship because her father refuses to allow her to interact with other people. There's a reason for that but to let you in on that secret would spoil some of the fun. Through a misunderstanding, some of Stine's scariest creations escape from their books and wreak havoc on a small Delaware town, forcing Stine, Hannah, Zach and others to try to put them back where they belong. It's good fun and it comes complete with a nice little twist in the narrative. A solid 4-star film.

A college kid putting on a bedazzled baseball cap is dumb. Farting in public is not just dumb it is disgusting! Talking to your neighbor's daughter after you've been told not to, very dumb. Police officers in that small Madison town in Delaware are 110% dumb, like they haven't been through any police academy training. Try to ride the Zamboni when you are being chased by yeti, not very smart. After releasing an abominable snowman from the book by accident, knocking him down and not running away, just sitting there watching the stars, absolutely dumb. Police officers sitting down on the job while everything is in chaos outside, unacceptable. What, is the government not paying you good money to take care of it's citizens? Telling Slappy to shut up is ultra stupid. Now chaos everywhere you come into an empty grocery store, suddenly you are thirsty, no security no clerks anywhere you want to rip them off something, well then please feel free and take your time to pick your favorite junk food. Telling your possible future lady friend that you didn't brush your teeth some years back, genius. Well eventually one way or another she may find out, still genius Albert. Have you ever tried kissing a ghost? Who are you man? I am Patrick Swayze. When Jack Black tells you to write a nice, suspenseful story with twists, you insist on writing 'bad guys lost, the end' not much of a Stephen King. Lame indeed. Ending is dumb, no matter what you see, it is still evil. No time machine that you can use to go back and change the ending. Well, alright I will continue to watch your stupidity like a black comedy over and over. It means I enjoy watching you doing stupid things like nothing's wrong, cool.

Well, I saw the previews for this on an older DVD that I purchased and the kids and I thought it looked good enough to try out. So, I bought it.... and I am SOOOOOO glad I did! I used to be back and forth on whether or not I liked a particular Jack Black movie, but he has quite a few out there now that I like. When I saw who he was playing in the movie, I just had to get it. Not only is the humor great in it, but I love that they put (little spoiler here if you haven't seen it!) R.L. Stine in it as the drama teacher Mr. Black! Hilarious!! Obviously the story is not realistic, but that made it much easier for me to tell the kids about it. The ending was a LITTLE scary since it kind of leaves it open, but the kids got over it. I just turn it off before that part if I remember. We've watched it at least 10 times. Entertaining and funny. Great combo for a family type movie!

Great movie for old Goosebumps, like myself. Also a good movie for young/new Goosebumps fans. I dont know how i missed this movie went it was in theaters but happy i recently watched it. Good plot/setting, great cast and it was fun seeing old Goosebump book character come to life, a must watch every year around the halloween season 🎃 (Also when i opened it there was no UV code as advertised on the sticker on the back, but a simple email to sony rewards customer service, a couple pictures of the movie and i got a UV code after about a day which a major bonus!!)

モンスターホテル2 3Ｄの海外版の宣伝でこの映画の映像がありまして、あまりにも面白そうなので探して購入してみました。 日本では平成２８年１０月くらいに公開されるそうですがなぜ１年も遅れたのでしょう？ リージョンはＯＫでしたが海外版なのでもちろん日本語関係は一切ありません、公開もまだされていないため日本版もありません。 しかたなくおもっきり耳をすまして英語字幕で、さらにところどころ字幕を停止して本気で英語を読みながら鑑賞しました。 ストーリーは何とかついていけたのですがどうも言葉の言い回しにコメディーぽっいギャグかあるみたいでそこまでは読みきれませんでした、でも画だけでも面白さが伝わってきましてたいへん楽しい作品でした。 日本版が出たら早速観てみたいと思います。 特にオオカミ男の撃退方法がイキです。 3Ｄ具合もバッチリ、良い感じです。 追記、2017・3・5 日本版ＢＲがやっと手に入ったので再度日本語吹き替えを流しながら3Ｄで鑑賞してみました。 うーん、やっぱり面白い上記で書きましたが言い回しによくわからないとこがあってモヤモヤしてたとこも解決。 現在は3000円を切っているみたいなのでお買い得ですよ！オススメです。

Love this film and in 3D it is even better. It helped when i saw how cheap it was on amazon.I had heard of Goosebumps before but had never seen any on tv or read the books so when i saw this film i was amazed how good it was.Now it's one of my fave films.The special effects are great and so are the actors.Just a pure entertaining film.One of Jack Black's better films.Great for all the family to watch.
