What is the purpose for this unit?

This unit is mounted thru a side board of the layout and connected to the DCC computer. This is how You connect a wired cab to the system. These can be daisy chained to handle numerous wired cabs.

Does this product work with mrc prodigy express 2?

No it will not work for MRC. This unit has RJ12 connectors. MRC uses RJ45 (Ethernet type) connectors.

do you have to purchase extra cords to join together plugs?

Yes, you have to have the flat 6 conductor cable to join these panels together.
