What do i need to do/buy to fully use the m2. ssd slots capabilities?

You need to purchase an m.2 SSD (NVMe, not SATA). The installation is tool-less - no additional hardware is required. You then need to use the in-built Storage Manager software to enable the SSD Cache feature. Easiest way to locate this is to open Control Panel and search for SSD in the top left. You only NEED one m.2 drive if you intend to use a read-only cache, though you can use two and set up in RAID 0/1. The reason for this is that if there is a loss of power or similar failure, your data is still stored on your main data drives. If you intend to use a read & write cache, you MUST have two m.2 drives as Synology DSM will insist they are set up in RAID 1. This is to protect from data loss should one of the drives fail whilst any data in the write cache is still mid-write to your main data drives. If you intend to use this second type of cache, read and write, consider purchasing a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) which can help to protect you against sudden loss of power to the drive as a result of a power cut. Can i use one 1x8gb ddr memory instead of using 2 x4gb memory (does it support 1 8gb module instead of 2x4gb module)

4Gb are onboard and you could not change it. There is a sodimm slot to increase the onboard memory, and officially it is supported a 4Gb stick, but I have a 8Gb reused from a laptop and people have put a 16Gb one. But check the brand / speed just in case.

Can you set this up. Bay 1 & 2 as a movie raid then 3 & 4 as a photo raid

You can but if your going to use shr1 or raid 1 you would be better off creating a pool with all drives in raid 5 or shr1. You will get more storage space and you just create a share for movies and 1 for pictures. You can set a storage limit per share folder of you want

Wow!

I didn't realise how good these were..... really robust, easy to install and understand, a bit of learning but that's to be expected, good to have disk redundancy and off site backup working... Sharing with clients is also easy and having all my work locally is brilliant, no more waiting for google, it's all just there.

This NAS is great, the Synology software is really easy to understand and use. It works really fast in delivering files and pictures to my client computers and laptops. The best NAS operating system I have used. It supplied all my shared files to my users in the same manner as the Microsoft server which it has replaced, no one noticed!

Love it. So many cool features..

Some reviews say it's loud, I have it on my desk next to me, barely a beep or whir. These are not just storage, you can host websites, VPNs, Plex media servers, virtual machines, docker containers, all sorts. The Synology OS is clean and straight forward, and setting most things up is really simple. I had a home media Plex centre up and running in 5 minutes. Literally: Apps > Plex > install. Job done.

Arrived Defective, neglecting to ship correctly DONT BUY

Well first, drives were loose in the bays, not supported or locked in place which ended up making one of the bays broken on delivery. Absolutely nonsense of a product, would never buy this product again or ever from this vendor.

Synology DS920+

Parcel arrived quickly and was very well packed. Setup was pretty straight forward and connecting to my local network as expected. Installing the software required as easy as clicking on "Install" for each package selected and waiting for the system to install the selected package. The sytem is fast and a pleasure to use. Within about half an hour I was happily transferring my photographs and files to the DS920+ which I have setup as a RAID 5. A greatpiece of kit well worth the price paid. Would recommend for anyone wishing to secure their data.

Compré este NAS porque mi RS212 se ha quedado obsoleto. Añadiéndole más memoria va estupendamente. Concretamente el módulo Crucial RAM CT8G4SFRA266 8GB DDR4 2666MHz CL19. Le instalas docker y portainer y puedes tener varios contenedores andando, aparte de poder usarlo como backup. Depende de lo pesados que sean y el uso que le des.

Man kann viel... SEHR VIEL mit einem NAS machen. Ich nutze es zur Datansicherung meines PC's. Bisher seeehr erfolgreich. Es können sowohl Zeitpläne als auch manuelle Sicherungen mit der mitgelieferten Software eingestellt werden. Man braucht keine EXTRAS dazu. Ich kontrolliere die gesicherten Daten seit einigen Jahren, nach jeder Sicherung, und siehe da.... alles auf dem aktuellen Stand. Er funktioniert einwandfrei und ich kann ihn nur weiterempfehelen!
