Great portable drive
Using with libre drive to rip movies to jellyfin. Works great, even though region was set to Japan.

A Good Drive but Caution
I really like this drive. It feels like high quality and a good value. I have the latest Cyber DVD software (I purchased it separately. I bought this to plug into my Dell Optiplex 7000 media center computer. The Cyber software told me that I need to install the Intel SGX extension and provided a link to download it. I did so and installed it. However, I discovered that the firmware in the computer doesn't provide a way to turn on the SGX in the BIOS. I contacted Dell to see if they can provide a way to turn it on. They told me no and to contact Intel. So, even thought I recently bought this Dell Optiplex 7000, I am on the hunt for a new manufacturer and computer. So, I still cannot watch my 4k UHD Blu Rays.

Works great, but it uses a lot of power!
I use this player quite often, I've had it for a couple years now and it has never failed me. It does use quite a lot of power though, and the light on top will flash red when the machine is struggling. In order to rectify this you must plug the device into a powered USB hub, one that plugs into the wall, or find some other way to provide one amp of power or more to both cables.

DON,T BUY THIS

Perfect for ripping on linux
Bought this since I run an arch machine and I was having a hard time getting an affordable drive to start my backup hobby. I struck gold when I came across this drive. It is definitely region locked to japan, but using the Ultimate MakeMKV guide you can grab the firmware pack and easily find the firmware you need (ends in 22, read the other comment) It’s not hard either to flash the firmware and this thing rips discs at a decent speed, not crazy fast but good enough. I love it and would buy another when the time comes!

Great for ripping UHD blu-rays on Linux
Initially, I wasn't able to play any UHD discs on this drive. I'm not sure why but given that the text on the box is all in Japanese, I think it was region-locked to only play Japanese UHD discs. I flashed the firmware with: sdftool -d /dev/srX rawflash enc -i HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-BU12-OM01001-211902230922.bin Search for the "Ultimate UHD Drive Flashing Guide (Updated 2023)" in the MakeMKV site. Search for the text "MK firmware:" and you should get a link to the "Custom firmware pack with LibreDrive patches", which has a download link to the firmware patch. Please read through the entire post to make sure you don't accidentally brick your drive.

Good little drive
It's worked good for remuxing blurays and uhds. The firmware downgrade was pretty simple to do for uhds. I've used it for 6 months so far and done about 120 discs. Still works flawless. I wish Amazon also carried the powerbrick. I was able to get one imported from Japan but it would have been nice to get one the same time as the drive.

This external Buffalo drive offers compatibility with 4K content for those "on the move" and with modern laptops lacking an optical drive. It is quiet, does the job it claims to do, namely playing 4K content. However, for the price, it lacks decent connectivity and is of suspect, plastic construction. Importantly - and unlike the similar Archgon equivalent - on sale with Amazon UK for about £10 more - it does not come with any form of travel case or protective cover - which is disappointing for a device clearly designed to be portable. As I try to do with my reviews, I will offer some positive and negative observations:- Positives + Does the job - plays 4K content + Quiet in operation + Quick when the situation allows it - for example importing an audio CD in to iTunes Negatives - Ridiculously short USB cable that is molded to the case end - No USB-C connectivity, only USB-A/3.1 offered - more of a challenge for newer laptops - Plastic construction - feels lightweight and flimsy. I worry it might be to fragile to survive a laptop bag - No transport case or protective sleeve - seems a bit "cheap" for a £125 drive It's a bit too soon to say how this drive will stand up to life on the road as I've only had it a few days. It arrived well protected, in a beefy cardboard shipping box that is far too large to take with it in general use. I've tried it with my LG Gram laptop and 2 desktop PCs and it works smoothly with all. It is mostly quiet in operation. However, the ridiculously short USB connecting cable makes ergonomics a joke - I don't have a lot of USB-A sockets on my laptop and have little choice where I can connect this - which makes any work surface a compromise as you have to work around the placement of this device. The cable is so short that when I tried to connect to a mid-tower chassis with USB ports half way up the front, I had to create a stack of books to elevate the drive to allow the stupidly short cable to reach. Sum-Up: Defeat snatched from the Jaws of Victory - a well-performing drive mechanism in a cheap case with disappointingly miserly cabling and no travel case.

An excellent external UHD blu ray player. Most of the latest PC (gaming) cases do not have a slot for installing an internal CD/DVD/Blu ray drive. So buying this very capable piece of hardware allows me to play all of these discs, including UHD blu ray, with my PC. I don't have to throw my collection away! The machine is well made, and looks great. It is for the Japanese market. The instruction manual is in Japanese. Fortunately it is a plug and play item, so it is not essential to read the manual. It does have an extra lead to be connected to a 5 volt power supply I would imagine. I think when the indicator light is red and not green, it needs this extra power. Lastly, as with a few of the Japanese sellers, aside from good and prompt services, the seller included a good luck charm as a thank you token. A cute touch.

Order drive to play 4K UHD on my PC. Drive stated it would play UHD but did not specify that you required very specific PC specs in order to play UHD. Requirements are that you have an Intel 10th or 11th gen CPU that has SGX. So the drive arrived and worked great on DVD and Blu-ray but not UHD. Customer service was very helpful in coming to a mutual arrangement. Quick response to inquiries.
