Teaching computer and network security principles via hands-on activities Unique among computer security texts, the Second Edition of the Computer & Internet Security: A Hands-on Approach builds on the authorโs long tradition of teaching this complex subject through a hands-on approach. For each security principle, the book uses a series of hands-on activities to help explain the principle; readers can "touch", play with, and experiment with the principle, instead of just reading about it. The hands-on activities are based on the author's widely adopted SEED Labs , which have been used by over 1000 institutes in more than 65 countries. Topics covered in the book - Software security: attacks and countermeasures - Web security: attacks and countermeasures - Network security: attacks on TCP/IP and DNS - Packet sniffing and spoofing - Firewall and Virtual Private Network (VPN) - Newly discovered attacks, including Meltdown and Spectre attacks on CPUs, Dirty COW, Shellshock, Heartbleed, Hash collision, etc. - Common hacking and defense techniques - Cryptography, PKI, and TLS programming - Bitcoin and Blockchain Review: Absolutely worth every penny. - I've worked in IT for 20+ years in a variety of roles and in a risk and compliance capacity for the last 7 or 8. I've been required to take a more direct involvement with security and so have been up-skilling for the past year. I've read several books, numerous whitepapers and completed umpteen multimedia training courses. This book is the single most valuable resource I have discovered to date. It is very thorough and goes into technical detail in depth but is very well structured and easy to read. The author is clearly not just technically very knowledgeable but an excellent teacher as well. The book is only half the story though. The author has also made available for free online a collection of labs (SeedSecurityLabs.org) using virtual machines he has developed to enable the user to get hands on familiarity with the numerous security concepts covered in his book. You could use the labs on their own and you could read the book on it's own but really the two are best used together. Whether you are a student, someone looking to move into a cybersec role or an existing cybersec professional looking to fill gaps in your knowledge this book is an excellent resource and worth every penny. Review: Excellent!!! - Prof Wenliang Du book is very insightful. This is an Excellent book and a "must buy /read " for anyone who intends to pursue a career in IT Security. I will highly recommend this book. Well done!! prof

I love the hands on aspect
A professor in my college uses this book for his security class. I really like how the material is presented in this book. He assumes a background in CS for some of the topics, such as the examples in C, but he covers much of the material in a very easy, and not complete boring, manner. I'd definitely recommend it for someone interested in security in general as there are a wide variety of topics covered. The blockchain section, added with the second edition, is primarily information about how blockchain works. It notes that in future versions there will be additional information relating to the security of blockchain.

A Gem
I come to know of Professor Du through his fantastic Udemy video courses in computer security. A picture is worth a thousand words; a video is worth a thousand pictures. I learnt a lot from the courses and the labs. In the course, he lays out the theories first, then shows how to write programs to demonstrate the concepts and follows up by conducting lab practices. He is a great educator by designing the great labs and offering them free to other people. I find that his book and courses complement each other. I need to refer to the book to dig deeper into the theories covered in the courses. The book itself is a gem.
