I feel like an absolute fool for asking. How do you unlock the pumps? I’ve tried turning the things, pushing and turning, pulling and turning. Help!

Same problem. I have found that removing the pump from the bottle and using a gripper pad (for opening jars) can help when trying to free up the pump. Then, simply keep the well-working pump for use on future bottles if desired.
