What i think i am seeing in the picture is two different converters. is one a straight through gender changer & the other a null modem configuration?

not sure your application, this is an RS232 signal swap adapter. Here is pinout: pin-1 goes to pin-4, pin-2 to pin-3, pin-5 to pin-5, pin-7 to pin-8, and pins-6&9 are not connected.
