We can't shoot good pictures without good lighting, no matter how good the newest cameras are. Shooting under available light gives exposure, but lacks depth, contrast, contour, atmosphere and often separation. The story could be the greatest in the world, but if the lighting is poor viewers will assume it's amateurish and not take it seriously. Feature films and TV shows, commercials and industrial videos, reality TV and documentaries, even event and wedding videos tell stories. Good lighting can make them look real, while real lighting often makes them look fake. Lighting for Cinematography , the first volume in the new CineTech Guides to the Film Crafts series, is the indispensable guide for film and video lighting. Written by veteran gaffer and cinematographer David Landau, the book helps the reader create lighting that supports the emotional moment of the scene, contributes to the atmosphere of the story and augments an artistic style. Structured to mimic a 14 week semester, the chapters cover such things as lighting for movement, working with windows, night lighting, lighting the three plains of action and non-fiction lighting. Every chapter includes stills, lighting diagrams and key advice from professionals in the field, as well as lighting exercises to help the reader put into practice what was covered. www.lightingforcinematography.com Review: It's a good book! - Product condition wise is arrived pristine and well kept, no folds or wrinkles Product though, Overall all it is a good book. Cover lighting from a very visual and representative standpoint. Other lighting books tend to cover from a scientific and technical perspective this book walks you through relative lighting positions and theory practices instead. A must have for anyone who is looking to get into cinematography or simply looking to understand light a little better Review: Two Thumbs Up! - Fantastic non-technical overview of lighting, with several different scenarios and anecdotes. Paired with the Set Lighting Technician's Handbook, one can receive a relatively encompassing education of lighting for cinematographers. Landau goes through different daylight interior/exterior and night time interior/exterior with stills to illustrate each of the his written examples. A great book on the design of lighting, but definitely needs to be paired with the Set Lighting Technician's Handbook for a full education. Great read!

As if you are on set!
Theory, execution, and examples all in one book. This is a practical guide that is insightful, educational and easy to understand. As someone completely new to film, I've learned a tremendous amount!

For Still Photographers too
Great book. I'm a commercial photographer (still photography) and able to apply most of the book to my trade. Aside from lighting technique and explanation, there is plenty info on grip to help you run a smooth and safe studio. I will definitely recommend this to other photogs for lighting education. Only thing that stands out that could use improvement are the images used for demonstrating the concepts. That aside, it's a really great resource.

Solid book with good explanations
I make short films with DSLRs. I was not familiar with all the different types of lights and setups this book describes. The author did a good job of explaining the subject in the print medium. A lot of care was taken to illustrate the reasons for the lighting approach for each scene. The author's real world stories and experiences translate nicely. I like how the emphasis was on independent filmmaking and not Hollywood budget type shoots. Many thanks to David for teaching me some cinematography!

A Great Read and Prep
I am thoroughly enjoying this book. It's clarity. Little tidbits and highlights. Well written. Immensely helpful. As a director I consider it a privilege to work with other great experts at their craft so I like to know enough to really be able to hold an in depth conversation with them. This will help me immensely in communication with my cinematographers and gaffers.

The best book on lighting a movie I have come across!
Full colour all the way through - the way nature intended! And the illustrations are very good. This is an excellent book. Read, learn and inwardly digest every inch of this book and then go on set and hopefully watch how what you have learnt from this book is put into practice! Unlike most books on making movies, Landau actually has walked the walk and knows precisely and exactly what he is talking about. He opens the student's eyes to the various 'tricks-of-the-trade' needed to get that perfect 'Hollywood-Look' or that 'Dutch-Masters-Look' or to build tension through a 'Film Noir' atmosphere. If a student actually gets to go on-set with one of the greats, he will be exposed to some, but not all, the techniques and artistry described in this book. The same is true for college courses and the like. The fact that Landau covers it all, means that the student really gets to taste and read about all the various ways of lighting a movie, a sitcom, or a two-reeler short.

Best book I've read on the subject (and I've read a few)
Best book I've read on the subject (and I've read a few). Other authors (e.g. Blain Brown) focus a lot on the "what": "This is an inkie, this is a PAR", etc. Not that helpful for the low-budget filmmaker who's making do with a few cheap LEDs and whatever else he or she can scrounge up. Landau focus on the "why" and the "how": lighting backgrounds, different lighting situations, basic lighting theory. Highly recommended.
