3/4" from center hole to center hole. The screws provided are a perfect fit and easily bite into the wood...no predrilling necessary.

How much force can they take before breaking?

We used these to help secure our Rabbit cage. The latches that came with the cage our rabbit kept opening. These have worked well enough. They are a little soft and can bend, but so far they give and let the rabbit out of the cage when he pushes against them and not break. Our rabbit is smart. These held him in a few months before he learned to open the latch. Now we have the latch wired. Not sure if that helps.
