Works great! So easy to use.
Bought this to replace a 30-year-old+ Radio Shack demagnetizer that they don't make any more... but the power cord was getting brittle. Works great to demagnetize old hard drives, floppy disks, even old cassette tapes. So easy to use, flip the switch! I've had no problems, and it's helped me clear out a huge stockpile of old stuff that needed to be secure-cleaned.

Makes a great paper weight
I had tens of dozens of hard drives I needed wiped. Hoped this would make the job faster. The first drive we left on for 60 seconds, but the drive continued to work like it always had. The next try, we left it on for 5 minutes. Someone had to stand beside it because the drive kept sliding off due to the vibration. Again, the hard drive worked like we never degaussed it. The last time, we left it on for 15 minutes, and again, someone had to stand there to make sure it didn't slide off. I don't have time to stand and hold over 200 drives on the platform for 15+ minutes each. Nor do I have the money to pay someone to stand there for something that obviously wasn't working. Since most drives can't be used again after degaussing, dropping them on the ground until the platters rattle and pieces flew out of it was a great stress-relieving team-building exercise and much more entertaining. Well worth the time it took to sweep up the concrete parking area!

It works for VHS tapes
I wanted to erase some video tapes and simply recording nothing on them in a VCR didn't make any sense. I have an extensive collection of tapes since I bought my first VHS deck in 1978, and I'm clearing out the old junk and I wanted to be able to bulk erase some of the VHS tapes. This unit works pretty well although it takes multiple passes on both top and bottom to do the job. It's still drastically faster than erasing it in a VCR!

Totally Erases
Yes. This will totally get rid of data stored on a hard drive or anything else for that matter.

Be Careful
had one today, not turned on, randomly overheated and started smoking. Unit was immediately removed from the building and placed outside to prevent any damage to the building. So much for Thermal Shutdown.

I think they are good at what they do
I don't have a way to test, but am very happy as I believe in this. One word of caution. Don't lean over it. Seems simple to me, but my husband learned right over it and felt sick for the rest of the day. use it as intended and the only thing that should be near the top part is the item you are working to erase. I like knowing my customers are safe and their information is not retrievable from the memory and hard drives.
