UB420 Streaming 4K Blu Ray Player, Ultra HD Premium Video Playback with Hi-Res Audio, Voice Assist - DP-UB420-K Blu Ray DVD Player (Black)

The Panasonic UB420 Streaming 4K, BD, DVD Ultra HD Premium Video Playback with Hi-Resoluion Audio player is spectacular. I bought this unit to replace a very high end Samsung player that stopped working after two years and I swore I would never buy another Samsung product of any kind. I found this Panasonic unit and knew, from past experience, that it was a very reputable brand. I was not disappointed in the ease of setting up the unit, configuring it, and using it to play 4K, BD, and DVD movies and concerts. It's an amazing piece of technology and has all of the features that I wanted that were compatible with my high end A/V receiver, CD player, and TV. The audio and video quality exceeded my expectations, which were extremely high to begin with. The first disk I played was a 4K Bob James trio concert and the color and clarity of the video and the 5.1 surround sound provided an atmosphere that was as though I was sitting on stage surrounded by the keyboard, bass, and drums. I was impressed with the dynamic range and subtle nuances particularly where the percussion was concerned. The only thing I don't know yet is how long this unit will provide the high quality reproduction of audio and video but, if this unit is of the same high standard of other Panasonic products I've owned, I can anticipate many years of excellent entertainment from this unit.

***4+ years of use update: ZERO issues playing DVD, Blu-ray & 4k discs. Have not had to do anything but push the power button and insert the disc & play. Amazing picture quality. NO freezing or glitches like my previous Sony players.*** I bought a new 65" 4k TV and a new 4K AppleTv in 2019. I have owned 2 generations of Sony's middle to higher end blu-ray players and have experienced loud disc spin noise plus a ton of software buggy issues with both models. Then they dumped support for Hulu. YouTube and Netflix poor to ok reliability, with the YouTube app often not working for weeks at a time. Disc playback was ok IF it didn't hangup/crash on you on initial disc insertion. So NO MORE Sony Blu-ray players for me. Researched and came across a lot of happy folks using these Panasonic models. Around the holidays it was only $149 Prime so ordered it and glad I did. Picture quality is outstanding and no issues like I was experiencing with the Sony player. Easy setup with plugging in power and HDMI cables (One is provided with the player but I bought a pair of "Atevon High Speed 18Gbps HDMI 2.0 Cable - HDCP 2.2" 6ft cables - ASIN B06XP129CT). Was able to get it connected up to my WiFi network with no trouble. Updated the firmware & good-to-go. One issue I did encounter was the Panasonic remote's power and volume buttons to control the TV did not work with my Samsung Q80 TV. Page 8 of the DP-UB820 players "advanced owners manual" (google it) explained how to reprogram the remote control - Hold the power button down and input the 2 digit tv code (Samsung #s: 20/21/22) page 26 supplied the different TV brand's codes. Now buttons are functional with my TV. I am not planning on streaming with any apps on this unit because I am very happy with the quality and ease of the 4k AppleTV. (R.I.P. Sony Blu-Ray player - & good riddance...) Hope this review helps!

*Update: The problem got worse the more I used it, so I decided to file a warranty claim with Panasonic. I was nervous they would not be able to replicate the problem, but they must have seen it since they sent me a replacement unit. The new unit has worked well so far. I'm hoping the first one I had was just defective. Updated the rating to 4 stars. Original review: I did a lot of research before deciding to purchase this player. I needed a player with 2 hdmi outputs so I could send the 4k video to my projector and the audio to my older receiver. This feature is only available on a handful of players and is mostly found on higher end players. My decision came down to this player and the Sony 800mkii. There are a couple of differences between the two and many reviews about each. This player went on sale so I pulled the trigger. After connecting the player, it guided my through a simple setup to get started. I went through the menu settings and configured it to my liking. I played numerous discs and most played without issue. On a couple of discs, the video would breakup for a second or two then clear up. I did some research and found that some 4k discs could have a layer of film on them from when they were made that could cause this issue. So I used a microfiber cloth and gently wiped them before playing. This seemed to help, but some discs still had occasional issues. I called Panasonic tech support to verify this wasn't a firmware issue or something I was missing. The tech support wasn't very helpful, only suggesting that I would need to send the player in for repair. I have not yet sent it in for repair as I am concerned they won't be able to replicate the issue as it only happens occasionally on some discs and it would cost me around $25 to ship the unit. I have decided to just deal with the occasional issues and clean discs thoroughly before playing. I hope a future firmware update will resolve this issue completely as it seems is might be something related to how the player is reading the discs. That being said, every player I looked at had some reviews indicating some sort of issue. When the player is working correctly, the picture quality is excellent on bath 4k discs and standard Blu rays. The streaming services work ok, but tend to be very slow when loading. I don't use this device for streaming since it is pretty limited. It has prime and netflix as the major services, but lacks Disney plus. I would rate this player a 3.5 overall.

This is a great player. The picture and sound quality are superb. I gave the "User Interface" only 3 stars, because: The unit only comes with a Basic Owner's manual, which is VERY limited. You need to go on the web to dig into what this player is capable of doing and that is about everything except make your breakfast! I have not had time to go through everything. But one item I use often is subtitles. There is a button on the remote for subtitles, however It does not always work on older DVDs or perhaps all DVDs. You have to know if the subtitles are digital or analog! In other words when you push the "CC" button to get subtitles, good luck. If you use your DVD player to stream (which I do) the only streaming service I have been able to get the player to lock into is Prime Video. Have not been able to get my VUDU account to come up. So it is a good thing that I have the Apple TV 4K ! I would also like to mention the Remote Control. Why do they have to make it so the buttons are so small, except for the NETFLIX button which I keep pushing when using the arrow keys? Bottom line: I bought this player for the quality of the picture and sound when watching 4K, Blu ray and regular DVDs, then this machine shines.

Works great. With a Samsung tv ,Dolbyvision doesnt matter to me. It makes a definite improvement on dvd discs. Regular Blu-ray discs already looked pretty sharp with the tv upscaling.

Comparing to my LG UBK80 (no longer made). PICTURE QUALITY: decent, but no better than my LG. Perhaps if one has an ultra-top-tier OLED TV you might be able to see the difference? I have no idea, but using my TV (55" 4K Hisense, Dolby Vision, HDR, HDR10+) I see NO picture improvement w/the Pana over the LG. The Panasonic 420 has their touted "HCX" chip, but the picture looked no better than the LG UBK80 across the board for me, with UHD discs, as well as upconverting from 1080 on multiple BluRays and 1080p files. BUILD QUALITY: cheaply made, feels like it won't last. FLAWS: If you want to use an HDD to play video files, good luck using the front USB 2.0 port (DC 5v 500ma). It's so weak NO HDD WILL WORK ON IT. Panasonic does put a USB 3.0 port on the back as well (on the 420 model) that supplies more power (DC 5v 900ma) for HDDs, but that means constantly reaching back behind the unit to plug and unplug there all the time, as using a USB extention cable to make it more convenient will sometimes make the HDD unplayable even back there because the cable cuts down on the power. Compare this to the LG. The LG only has a USB 2.0 port in the front -- and it's rated THE SAME as the junky Panasonic front USB port -- (DC 5v 500ma) -- yet HDDs work perfectly with the LG, and LG even mentions HDD usage is okay in the manual. Even with the same power rating, the LG is built so much better, and the front USB always works perfectly with HDDs 100% of the time, while the front USB on the Pana won't work at all. The LG also doesn't need to have a fan, the way the Pana 420 does (some people don't like the fan noise). [Note: With all brands of 4k players, the HDD must be 2TB or less and formatted as MBR, not GPT] NO RESUME (remembering where in the movie it was when you pressed STOP) after pressing STOP on a BluRay disc... ONLY on a UHD disc. Talk about stupid engineering. This is even mentioned in the manual. CANNOT FRAME ADVANCE. When you're watching and press PAUSE, you cannot then do a frame-by-frame advance the way you can on the LG (or even old DVD players!) Pressing PAUSE again simply re-starts the movie. NO EXTERNAL SUBTITLES when playing files off USB/HDD unless the files are included INSIDE an MKV file container. With the LG, if you have "video.mp4" and "video.srt" in the same folder you can view the external subtitles. Not with the Panasonic. The features that the Panasonic touts, like the HCX chip, or lots of speciality menu picture settings, I do not see any improvement on with my setup compared to my LG (and my LG isn't an OPPO, it was a lower-end unit). Add to that, that the Panasonic is cheaply built and basic standard features are mysteriously gone, and it's not something I want. My LG UBK80 is a basic player and doesn't do streaming like the Pana 420 (though its also-discontinued brother, the LG UBK90, does) but I don't care about streaming from my player, I'd rather just have a good, well-designed basic player. I bought the Panasonic 420 (and even a 3rd party remote for it too!) thinking I'd keep it to replace, or keep as a spare, for my LG. Nope. Returned it and found another LG on an auction site instead to keep as a spare.

Unlike my last 4k player, the Sony x700, bought early this year, this Panasonic is head and shoulders better. It does everything it does better than the Sony--not just a little better--a lot better. It's real close to perfect, imo. Don't buy the x700 Sony player unless you plan to start a betting pool on whether or not your streaming movies from Netflix and Amazon or your DVDs, your BluRays, or your 4k discs will lock up and freeze--or you want to take bets on how often a single stream or disc will lockup and freeze. The only relief for the Sony x700 when it locks up (not if) is a power off. I'm not anti-Sony by any means, in fact I originally bought the x700 because my streaming and BluRay experience with my prior Sony BluRay player was excellent--not a single freeze or lockup in years of use--right up until Amazon Prime Video dropped the player due to its obsolescence. If you are skeptical, just Bing/Google/Duck "Sony x700 freezes" or something similar and you will be amazed at how many similar reports you will discover. Unfortunately, for me, I bought the x700 before I did my usual due diligence on my experience with my last Sony player/streamer because that experience had been so good. One guy I read commented that he had never had a lockup with his x700 over a 17-month period; another guy I read commented in various AV forums that he had to swap his x700 out *five times* before he got one that wouldn't freeze. It's such a common experience with the x700 that Sony even addresses the freezes on the official support site for the x700, and provides power-cycling instructions. The only thing the UB420-k doesn't have that some people want these days is Dolby Vision support. I don't have a DV television, just an HDR 10 television, and didn't want to pay $200 more for the UB-820 just to get Dolby VIsion support...;) (The x700 supports Dolby Vision, but in a constantly freezing product, who cares?) Even the settings pages for the UB420 are simple, direct, extremely easy to understand, and every setting has an explanation included on-screen. The interface couldn't be simpler to use. Just tick the feature boxes down the list and the UB-420 does it right. (The Sony x700 setting pages were enough to confuse even me, and I like to think I know what I'm doing...;)) One last comparative comment: the remote for the UB420 is far superior to the one included with the x700--because it not only is ~33% larger, which allows you to feel your way around the buttons comfortably, it also means the keys are often larger and spaced further apart. It's very comfortable in my hands in use. I read the negative comments about the UB-420 in this forum and they left me shaking my head...;) Not even close to my own experience. It works seamlessly and perfectly with my Sony AV receiver-amp, as well, btw. Last, after ~48 total hours of disc playing consisting of DVD movies, BluRay movies and 4k movies, it's a joy to report not a single lockup or freeze! (I use a ROKU Ultra to stream these days.)

Don’t listen to the bad reviews the Panasonic UB420 is the best 4K Blu ray player I’ve ever owned it makes my 4K Blu rays Blu rays and DVDs all look amazing And the sound quality is amazing too it has no Dolby vision but It does have HDR10 and HDR10+ and as a Samsung tv owner with no Dolby vision this player was perfect for my entertainment setup Also for the people mentioning overheating issues turn off quick start as if enabled will keep the player on even when you turn it off disabling quick start will turn the player completely off and solve the overheating issue and the player turns on quickly anyway so quick start is not needed Overall the Panasonic UB420 is an amazing 4K Blu ray player with great Video and Audio quality and great upscaling for Blu rays and DVDs Highly recommended

Si tienes una tele samsung, este Bluray es muy genial, me encanta su función del HDR para ciertas películas es capaz de aumentar el brillo y sin que se pierda detalles en las peliculas, algunas peliculas que no estan en 4k de igual forma se ven en buena calidad, en cuanto a su apartado del sonido me gusta se escucha muy nítido aun no le pongo algún equipo de audio, para ver que tanto puede hacer, de igual forma recomiendo buscar en internet buenas configuraciones para sacarle el máximo provecho y que a su vez se adapten a tu tv

Depois de uma semana de uso, estou muito satisfeito. O que mais me impressionou foi o upscaling em blu-rays comuns, a imagem fica incrível, mesmo em alguns discos antigos de qualidade não tão boa. Com o disco 4k o resultado foi o esperado. A voltagem é 110v.

The seller shipped it promptly and got it before the promised delivery date. The bluray player is really nice for a beginner 4k player device and does a decent job in color reproduction and picture quality. Sound clarity is nice too. The price cannot be helped since India doesn’t have much dvd players in sale like it had 20 years ago so every device has to be imported but for collectors, this is something good to have.
