Can they be left out in the open around doors and windows?

The Enoz Lavender Scented Moth Ball Packets can be left out around windows and doors but they will evaporate quickly. Even when in a closet or cabinet they evaporate faster that the moth balls or cakes. When I can find then I use the lavender scented moth cakes.

How long will it take for these to kill moths?

I'm not sure... but they seem to work keeping various moths, mice, and roaches at bay; especially here in our hot, humid Florida weather.

are these packets harmful to people if used in closet or packed with clothes?

I find the packets very useful, neat and tidy and leave no lingering odor. They have to be replaced periodically - which is to be expected.
