Best litter ever
The only litter I get for my cats now. Zero dust, zero fragrance!! Has a very light natural woody scent but only if you're close to it when refilling/cleaning the litterbox. Clumps better than clay too imo and lasts about the same amount of time. A little expensive but worth it for my cats + my health. Better for the planet too. Only con is that since the pieces are small and light, it's very trackable and I can't use a litter mat (my cat thinks it's just an extension of the litter box 🤦🏼♀️). Nbd to sweep or run the robot vacuum once a day. I wish pet stores around me would carry this!

Best clumping litter ever and lightweight easy scooping but doesn't absorb odors
This litter is super lightweight and easy to scoop. Perfect for hands that are sore with arthritis! It is dust free. It clumps urine hard and dries out fecal material (poop) so well that waste is minimal - even stays together in firm clump when my one cat pees along the litterbox wall and clump comes free from wall without extra effort. This is the best of any litter I have ever used in my 30 years of owning cars and working in kennels and vet hospitals!! Truly! But there is a trade off. I wanted unscented (and used unscented scoopable clay litter too), and this litter is scent-free except for a subtle kind of woody smell when first poured into the box. The downside is that is does not absorb odors aa well so some days, I know when one of the cats has used the box because it smells. This is getting better as I find the best diet for my cats though (their poop has less smell so less smell to block). I have one covered and one uncovered litterbox and the smell is an issue with both equally I think. I am sure if I left it, the grass litter would dry the poop up great and the smell with it...but I can't stand to try it so I scoop right away when it happens, which is only occasionally. This is why I gave it 3 stars for scent. Not sure there is an answer to this without adding unnatural scents and/or dustiness to the litter - which are both worse in my opinion. Mixing some clay litter in is an option (see rest of review below) but I quit because of the negatives with this option. The clay litter just gets kind of sticky and is so heavy. They track both of the litters just as much I think. The grass litter is much easier to sweep or vacuum up even if it gets into a wet spot on the floor before I get to it. The grass litter seems to get trapped by the mats I have the litterboxes on better than the clay litter did. I included photos of my most recent set up and it is the least amount of litter tracked beyond the mats yet! My cats switched to this grass litter easily. I mixed in 1/4 or so of this new litter with their old litter. I had used Tidy Cat Clumping Unscented litter for years - all of my oldest 7 year old cat and for 12 years before that. As I scooped, I only added the new grass litter in as I needed more until the boxes were totally grass litter. On the 2nd litter box, I went from 1/2 or so straight to all grass litter with no issue (But be careful trying this - a picky cat might have balked and avoided the box because of this.) Two of my cats still prefer the Tidy Cat litter because they will use the litterbox with some of the Tidy Cat in it if I make it available (I had to experiment - pi ture 3 is a mix of litters) but all of the cats use the all grass litterbox some still even with Tidy Cat in their other box. Most importantly, they are perfectly willing to use the litterboxes fully and without issue with just grass litter in them both. As for brand, I tried this brand, one other grass litter brand (Both chosen for first trial by cost and good reviews.) and a crushed walnut shell litter. The other grass litter was more dusty - not good for my cats or my allergies - and I think I may be allergic to walnuts. The walnut shell litter had a noticeable nutty smell (not bad, just noticeable) and minimal dust despite better odor control...but my eyes itched and watered and my skin started itching after changing and scooping the boxes. This stopped again once all the walnut litter was gone. So this grass litter is all I buy now. I am going to order a couple of round, from the top litterboxes made by a start up company that are designed to work best with this kind of litter. Maybe the litterbox design will help with the occasional "stinky poop" issue. Just the lack of dust and ease of scooping due to superior clumping and lightweightness of the litter seal the deal for me. I am 6 months or so in to the switch and not planning to ever go back. I have 3 cats and two litterboxes. I try to scoop daily but have gone a week a couple of times and all of the above still held true. That was never the case with the scoopable clay litter. (Note: One litterbox per cat is the ideal but seems to be ok for us. I will post again if and when I get new litterboxes.) Quick additional note - The two bags for my subscribe & save order arrived this time with holes in them! The outside box was fine so don't think it was a delivery issue. One bag's hole was a slice and had a red heavy sticker over it so damage clearly occurred pre-shipment. The sticker had come mostly unstuck though so litter was spilled out in the box. I am in contact with Amazon and expect they will make it right. This is the 1st time I had issues with a litter shipment. Not an issue with litter itself but I am honestly not sure if this brand of litter is available elsewhere, such as through Chewy or local pet stores, so if Amazon handling becomes a recurring issue and they are the only source, this could be a negative.)

The best litter on the market. *Seven Year Update*
So, after SEVEN years, we figured it was time to post an update on our use and the incredible performance of the SmartCat All Natural Clumping Litter (20-pound). Since this original review was written on July 13, 2015, we stand behind everything written in the original review and then some! This litter is amazing and, despite Amazon sending us outdated and damaged product over the years, our review stands true. Our Ragdoll cat, Riley, is now going on ten years old and has been using this litter since he was a little tot. On October 15, 2022, we placed our 14th order for this litter, keeping two twenty-pound bags aside due to "Supply Chain Issues" that have existed for a while now. That means we have gone through only 12 bags of litter in seven years. Seriously. Twelve bags. SmartCat litter is amazing, especially if you don't shake the litter scoop when scooping out solid waste and clumped urine. Don't shake the scoop or you're just shaking stinky litter back into the box! Riley's litterbox never smells and is easy to clean. Pioneer Pet and their SmartCat All Natural Clumping Litter is amazing. It has been amazing since day one, and it's just as amazing more than seven years after our original review. We stand behind it and pray that this family-owned company is around for many years to come. Thank you Pioneer Pet!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This is absolutely a miracle litter. There's no dust; no fuss and no clinging perfume aroma. I thought I was doing well with TidyCat Power Blend for quite some time, but I decided to give SmartCat Litter from Pioneer Pet a shot and I have never looked back since. Power Blend was around $9 for a 10--lb container at the time that I switched. One container of that clay-based litter would last me a month or so with Riley, our 15-lb ragdoll cat. It did a great job, but NOTHING like this litter from Pioneer Pet. One bag of SmartCat lasts us around 7 months with daily litter scooping. Seriously? 7 months? But yeah...it's true. Plus, it clumps hard and there is no litterbox smell at all. None. No poop. No pee. Nothing. If you ever wanted a cat litter that actually WORKS at a price that might seem high at the time, but will save you tons in the long run, SmartCat All Natural Litter is the only choice out there. I'm going on two years with this product, and given the results and peace of mind I have from using a product that's truly all-natural from a company that's family-owned, as long as SmartCat is on the market, me and Riley the Ragdoll are loyal customers all the way.

funny, last litter type i finally try and it turns out it is the best!
**my review on this litter type is based on cleaning our giant petmate litter boxes at least twice a day and often right after the poop smell hits my nose if i am home.** i couldn't stand at how natural litters stunk the house up with their deteriorating used litter scent so i decided not to try this grass seed litter type. what a big mistake, could of saved quite a few dollars these last couple of years by not having to dump bad litter had i just given this a try. it is pricier somewhat (20lbs is like 40lb clay so really it is priced kinda like 1 and a half 40lb bag of dr. elsey litter) but, it literally does everything lots of us look for in a litter; low to no dust (depending on brand and handling - this one from here has low dust, petco no dust), clumps very well, no leaving cement piles stuck to boxes, no perfume/fragrant smell (to me it has just a light oatbran kinda scent), it is on the lightweight side, lasts longer than clay litters, and when waste is bagged into an odor blocking bags it doesn't fumigate out of them like other litters do.. The downside of this litter however is two things; 1. it tracks everywhereeeee badly (worse than even light weight litters like micro crystals) and i have extra large honeycomb mats surrounding our giant litter boxes but, they still can't stop this litter from finding its way around our house!! 2. some cats want to eat it! not even one minute after putting this in one of our boxes, a cat that has never eating any other litter before got in box, sniffed litter and started munching away.. the downsides are still worth using this litter to me, i much rather quickly vaccuum house everyday than have to breath in dust and have to dust my whole house every other day like i was doing with most other litters beforehand. no dusting is needed during week at all now (at least with other brand), even the small metal trash can next to box is still dust free!! as for eating litter issue, i fixed that by mixing in 20% of clump & seal multi-cat sandy litter that we use to use and that i knew wasn't dusty. the C&S has a strong fragrant scent to it (why we quit using it, not too strong mixed with this litter though) so i think it deters the cat/s from eating the grass seed litter or at least i have not seen the cat nor any other eating it ever since (now i just add a cup or two of C&S once a week). I am buying the petco version and this seems to be the exact type to me with the exception that it has more fine particles in it and therefore is about 5% dusty (could be from warehouse storage/handling/etc). i am mixing it in with petco's right now so won't know if this smartcat works as well until it is majority of the litter in boxes. this smartcat is about 3-5 dollars cheaper for 20lbs at current $22 price and even more cheaper on subscription so i am now subscribing to 5 of these litter a mth since price is cheaper. 4 stars for now because humidity is low/air is dry on east coast right now and i want to see how this litter holds up during warmer/humid days, and also see how it performs in the different litter box areas of our home, before rating it a 5. in past i had litter perform well in some areas of our home but not others and perform totally different during warmer/humid months, like the clumping micro crystal litter that works excellent in our upstairs hallway but, horribly near our dinning/kitchen area and the cat's upstairs bedroom.. will add these grass seed litter are holding up to 10 cats, that's pretty impressive! update: used this solely in a litter box, no mixing and about 4-5 hrs later, the air in the cat room smelled weird, kinda like light poop smell. so much so that after i saw there was no poop in box, i search everywhere in room for poop and even checked the cat's behinds!! the auto subscription i set up after buying first bag already shipped so got 5 bags to use and after that i am going back to using sophresh version that hasn't left the air in other areas of my house smelling like lingering poop! Hoping however, that maybe i will be lucky and only the first bag had a smell issue. Update again: bad first bag! recent bag i opened from the 5 bags i received, did not stink up the room. In love with this grass seed litter and the sophresh version!! cleaning boxes takes no time at all now and even though this is unscented, it has still cut down on the horrid poop smells (due to high protein/fat food change & digestive poop related issues) from penetrating our house by a good 90% since we started using this type of litter.. update again: grrr 3rd bag is stinking up our upstairs again! there seems to be a quality issue between bags, the second was great but, the first & third is not and i noticed when i was pouring some of the third bag with the previous bag that the third bag litter is a darker color than the second one..have 2 more bags to use, after that i will be sticking with petco's version only, no smell whatsoever downstairs where we use petco's only and thats per every bag so far (about 6).

Love this litter!
I don't normally write reviews, but I really love this litter. Didn't think I'd ever find one I really like. I was getting sick of a few things - hauling heavy clay litter up two flights of stairs (the last stuff I tried was Precious Cat, 40 lb bag), scraping clay litter off the sides since two of my cats always pee on the side of the box, dealing with clumps that fall apart as you scoop, and keeping up with the dust that clay litter produces. So I decided to try this. Definitely the most pricey option I have tried, but for once I can actually say I don't mind spending the money because it works! This stuff is LIGHT and SO easy to scoop. There have been a couple times where I was doing the scooping every other day (3 cats, 2 litter boxes) and the box with this stuff literally takes no time to scoop out. So I dread cleaning it less now. It's a quick job! The clumps stay together, I much prefer the smell of this to clay. The lightweight properties also help with scooping. And then there is one of this big positives- NO DUST. This is huge because my litter boxes are in my living spaces. The only negative I have found is tracking. It surely tracks like crazy.. and it only makes sense because the stuff is so light weight! It's bound to happen. I would much rather vacuum daily than deal with SCRAPING the litter off the sides, dealing with crumbling clumps, and having to get a 40 lb bag of litter up the stairs. Not to mention 20 lbs of this is more than 40 lbs worth of clay litter. So it lasts. I am fairly pleased and I really hope they never change it or discontinue it. Seems like anything I start to like either changes or is taken away.. So we'll see how long I can keep using this stuff successfully. I also really hope that I never end up with a buggy bag.. because I have a pet bird and I've been there. So far so good, but I will be checking each bag as it comes. If there are bugs I am hoping Amazon will be accommodating and take it back. So so far - I am completely satisfied with my purchase! And I highly recommend it to those looking for the same pros!

Keep your kitty healthy with natural grass litter instead of the dustyclay
I was looking for an alternative cat litter other than the clay litter. It's dusty and can build up in the lungs of your baby. My cat had started randomly coughing so I was stoaked to find this litter made from grass. It has a pleasant light scent. Not a heavy perfume scent. It clumps perfectly and is easy to scoop. The only draw back is it is so light and I have a long haired RagDoll and this litter tracks. But I honestly would rather sweep up 4 times a day to keep him healthy. I've been using it for 2 months now and he isn't coughing!! What I've gotten for the tracking is a mat that has mesh for the top layer so when he walks on it the litter falls onto the mesh and then you just dump the litter out. I made the mistake of getting the small one I wish I would have gotten the larger one. That's next on the list. But I highly recommend this litter. It's a great product.

Great Value and Clumping, but Bad Odor Control
good litter, smells kinda like oats to me. i definitely feel you get more litter in the bag for the price. its lightweight (i got the 20lb bag) and it was easy to carry all around while refilling my boys litter box. i dont feel grossed out when scooping either, this litter is really great at clumping. it does kind of lack in keeping any odors down though, after a couple days i was told that my room did definitely smell like litter box (suffering from litter box smell blindness lol) and luckily i had an unopened bag of paco and pepper poop shield with charcoal sitting around. i mixed the two and any unwelcome smells were suppressed. but definitely a good value for the bag i think personally. Edit: after a couple weeks the litter has gotten pretty dusty, my boy has started leaving little dust prints all over my bed. If you have a larger proximity from the litter box to your furniture you might be able to avoid that as your cat might have some time to clean their paws or walk the dust off.

Bye-bye A&H, Hello Smart Cat
I delayed switching litters for so long because I didn’t want to waste money on bad picks. Thankfully this was the first one I tried after Arm and Hammer and I love it! I wanted a more natural, as close to dust-free litter as possible. A lot of recommendations that I saw were composed of some sort of food matter. However, living in a tropical climate I thought that would attract roaches so I did not want to go that direction. That led me to Smart Cat. This is seriously dust-free or very little dust. I know many brands claim 99% dust-free, but it just does not actually seem like that. My previous litter claimed that, but the dust would fill the room it seemed like and also when my cat came to bed with me, you could smell the litter on her, which was so gross. This litter is not smelly at all. It does not carry a bad scent and it is not dusty. It really seems to dehydrate the cat waste. It’s also very lightweight. The litter is easy to scoop and use. It is such a significant change. I was considering getting an automatic litter box because I hate dealing with the litter but after changing to this litter, I don’t feel like that is necessary anymore. It made the whole process so much better. It’s a gritty texture so I may need a better mat for when my cat comes out, but I think that texture also causes it to stick less in her paws. I mean all around truly this is a great product and our new go-to.

Been trying to change from a good quality clay.
have been trying to find an alternative to the good fine clay clumping litter I have been using as getting to heavy for me and also wanted something more environmental friendly. Have tried, wood, silicone, corn and walnut but either my cats would not use or the clumps fell apart. Discovered this litter on amazon ( but difficult to find even with the exact title) thought I would give it a try. Well,it's lovely and fine and soft for cats paws , not dusty. really light to handle. and has no smell . even after the cats use it if they don't cover quick enough, they can't find were they peeed! it clumps into a rubbery clumps which holds together so easy to remove. I just shake the litter tray and they come to the surface and be picked out . ( no experience of poo as my cats only pee inside but go out to poo. ) The only down side of this litter is the price which I expect is because it comes from American. just hoping that some pet company will buy in bulk so we can get cheaper and easier in the UK. highly recommend

Great dust free, clumping cat litter with a few caveats
We’ve had great success with this cat litter! My cat readily uses the litter box, which is always a top priority. It’s truly dust-free, which is a major plus for us — 5 stars on that front. The litter clumps well, making cleanup easier, though I’ve noticed some small pieces tend to break off. These smaller pieces can be tricky to scoop with a traditional cat litter scooper, as most have spaces that are too large. I’ve started using a skimmer spoon with smaller holes to catch these smaller pieces. While we haven’t found the perfect size yet, it’s been an improvement. We really like the natural scent of the litter. The scent actually makes scooping enjoyable. It does a solid job of controlling odours, though we should note that we scoop the litter box daily (sometimes even up to four times a day) because keeping it clean for our fur baby is very important to us. One downside is that, due to its small particle size and lightweight nature, the litter tends to track quite a bit. A good-quality litter mat is absolutely essential. Overall, very pleased with this litter, and despite a few minor adjustments, we recommend it for its dust-free quality, odour control, and clumping ability!

By far the best litter I've ever used!
Honestly I don't get the negative reviews -- I literally buy this from Amazon so I can do a review here! To be fair, I once talked to a PetValu staff who seemed to be very knowledgable and told me that just like human, we're what we eat and the same goes to the cats: so each cat would have totally different PH value and different things in the urine which ultimately resulted in the clump-ability of different litters. However that being said, after having used literally pretty much all the brands and all types of litter in the market (seriously, all of them! because I have a very finicky cat who would pee on the floor left you scratch your head off not understanding why!), this is really by far the best litter that I've ever tried, period! If it's all possible, I would give it 6 stars! I only have two cats, but it's 2 of 2 "kitty approved" :) Both of them love it better than any other type and brand. It clumps really well -- seriously, you don't see any other litter company does the same demo like SmartCat by throwing a clumped litter like a ball and see how well it holds. Also it covers the smell really, really well. In the past, especially when we have heat alerts, my bathroom tends to have some sour leftover food type of garbage smell with the other natural based litter. But with this, even with the heat wave this year, my bathroom is perfectly fine! And really, there is no dust. -- does it track? Of course! I haven't come across ANY litter that my cats weren't capable of tracking; seriously, zero brand or product! But with SmartCat it's tolerable and also when you step on it, it won't hurt and you won't feel like you're living at your beach house. Seeing is believing! -- I attach a few pictures to showcase how well it clumps and how little it tracks (and for my other cat who doesn't like to cover his pee or poop, the tracking is far less with my unique litter pan here!!) Yes it's on the pricy side, but it really worth of every penny. I used to use the other famous brand of corn based litter, but now I'm a hardcore fan of SmartCat. I just wish I had come across that YouTube commercial and review much earlier and it would save me years of trouble with my litter problems!!

Clumps instantaneously, no dust, lasts much longer than other litters
This litter is amazing! I wanted to introduce it slowly to my cats to prevent any accidents, so I filled one litter box with their old litter (World's Best) and one litter box with this SmartCat litter. The SmartCat litter smells significantly less and clumps way better so you avoid accidentally breaking up the urine clumps which is the main reason the litter box starts to stink. With the old litter I would scoop daily and had to completely empty, wash box, and replace with new litter about once every 3 - 4 weeks. This SmartCat litter has been going strong for nearly 6 weeks, and still looks and smells the same as the day I poured it from the bag! It might be a little more expensive than you're used to, but you'll have to buy at least half as much. I highly recommend this litter to anyone with cats, especially those with small apartments and multiple cats like me. Edit: I can get this litter at a local pet supply store for over 50% cheaper ($45 with tax), so I recommend you checkout out the SmartCat website to see if it's available near you before buying from amazon
