Nervous spinster Charlotte Vale (Bette Davis) is stunted from growing up under the heel of her puritanical Boston Brahmin mother (Gladys Cooper), and remains convinced of her own unworthiness until a kindly psychiatrist (Claude Rains) gives her the confidence to venture out into the world on a South American cruise. Onboard, she finds her footing with the help of an unhappily married man (Paul Henreid). Their thwarted love affair may help Charlotte break free of her mother’s grip—but will she find fulfillment as well as independence? Made at the height of Davis’s reign as the queen of the women’s picture and bolstered by an Oscar-winning Max Steiner score, Now, Voyager is a melodrama for the ages, both a rapturous Hollywood romance and a poignant saga of self-discovery. Criterion’s release truly improves the film!
“Now, Voyager” is quite the romantic melodrama, and despite its longstanding respect in critical circles, it’s never quite won me over until now, in a restoration whose clarity somehow makes all the difference. It seems entirely new, not the film I saw on Sunday afternoon TV years ago, and tried watching again on VHS. Even on DVD, it seemed as muddy a mess visually as it did thematically. I never thought I’d purchase a blu-Ray of it, but the terrific cover on Criterion’s release caught my eye a while ago, and finally I sprang for it on sale. I am so happy I did. There are beautiful subtleties in the film, of expression and motion and voice, that had escaped me before. I was entranced. There are not tons of extras, but what is here is quite good and very interesting, especially an entire episode of The Dick Cavett Show with Bette Davis.

Excellent special feature with Farran Smith Nehme
One of the special features on the new Criterion issue of "Now, Voyager" is an interview (interviewer not seen or heard) with Farran Smith Nehme. I found this worth the price of the disc, and exactly what a film critic should offer in a special feature. First, she loves the movie. She presents interesting information about Bette Davis and the making of the film, and has her own insights and opinions to offer -- on the film itself, in its context. These are interspersed with beautifully-chosen clips and photographs. Finally, she speaks slowly and distinctly, and yet with appealing expression. Thank you Criterion and F.S.N.

A classic film you won’t forget!!!
Winner of 3 Oscars and one of Bette Davis’s best films. Having Gladsy Cooper in a supporting role does not hurt. Both nominated for Oscars. Criterio. Did an amazing tljob with a great transfer to bluray
