All you need No Filler if you need some google it all
This book is everything I have been looking for in a body building reference & the only one worth keeping in a gym bag. I have trained with weights for 20 years & done tons of programs, used every supplement & tried ever diet I thought had value. I wondered about this book because it was priced very high in my opinion for a 180 page book but after getting it & going through it I agree with many reviews in that it is very precise to the point proven methods for any training goal you would have from losing weight to adding muscle with all the information you need to plan your diet post work out meals & achieve proper nutrient & supplement modification with proper nutrient timing for feed efficiency. Based on my experience I have to say I agree with mostly all of these methods have a place based on goal & training phase. This is a must for any beginner because the hardest thing that most people fail to learn is proper diet & how to make your body work for you. It is true that I have come across all of this information for free all over the Internet. I'd also say that usually never get a total picture of everything I need to work out for a training phase all together in simple condensed information. I think the reason is that something that can be as simple as proper nutrition is actually some how a guarded secret that many successful athletes have. They sell supplements & some take steroids but nothing will ever work if you don't have the proper building blocks. I value this the most because I happen to agree with most of it from experience & I don't need to go through tons of research every time I work out a new program anymore, I'd rather be able to thumb quickly to what I wanna do & plan the entire phase from start to end. If your learning & hungry for knowledge and want to dive deep into tons of research do it, that's how you'll learn what works for you but do yourself a favor & pick this book up & then do research on the methods & techniques in this book until you understand it all & then use it as an quick reference when you discover it has it all. And even better of your just sick of trying every new thing or just want something easy to follow without long winded reasons this is definitely the book for you. People will also quickly dismiss the simplest & best answer to problems in life. This has always baffled me but people just want to make things hard or seem tricky. Believe me even at the Mr. Olympia with all the steroids in the world the winner will have a man behind the behind the certain who is above all else a master at nutritional manipulation. This book is not an amazing new way to a miracle body, it's just tells you how to make your body do what you want based on science & in the end the only way you'll ever achieve long term health is understanding your body or at least following the simple instructions from someone else who does like Dr. Warren Willey.

A "Must Have" in your bodybuilding library
I am a NATURAL bodybuilder. I've been on Dr. Mauro DiPasquale's "Anabolic Diet" for a while now with amazing results. DiPasquale's book is the basis of my diet, while "Big Beyond Belief" aka "Serious Growth III" or "Bulgarian Burst" is the basis of my weight training program. With these two winning combination, I've been building muscles and losing fat at the same time. The reason I'm including the above-mentioned programs in this review is because "Better Than Steroids" (BTS) outlines some of the principles that I have been using with great success. For instance, BTS thoroughly covers the body's powerful hormone - insulin. This hormone can literally make one's physique into a Herculean-like sculpture...or a fat slob like Michael Moore(sorry, I have no respect for liberals). Moreover, I am pleased that my post-workout meal has been on the money all along, unbeknownst to me that I've been doing the right thing until this book confirmed so. (I'm not going to reveal what it is:) Just buy the book.) I just have to adjust my diet and include a pre-workout meal, which is also described in the book. What I love about BTS is that it has several algorithms - lose fat / maintain muscle, lose fat / increase muscle and increase muscle / maintain fat. The doctor is kind enough to provide a detailed 12-week program of each algorithm, which tells the bodybuilder what to eat, the sort of exercise to perform and the type of cardio required. As far as dieting is concerned, there are weeks that the bodybuilder will implement a keto run diet, which is very identical to Dipasquale's "Anabolic Diet." But what I love about BTS is that there are several other diets used to stimulate muscle growth and burn the fat. Those diets are: isocaloric; zigzag high, medium and low; modified carb high; modified carb low; keto run and free. These different diets are strategically periodized and built into the 12-week programs; the bodybuilder will certainly do something different every week and not just stick with one type of diet day in and day out. This is a HUGE plus in terms of keeping motivation high and keeping the body from reaching a plateau. Get this book now! Dr. Willey knows his stuff.

Covers the most important part of building a great body - Nutrition.
I love this book because it covers the key to a great body, nutrition. It concentrates more on nutrition than it does on weight training and cardio. I love that. The only reason I gave this book a 4/5 is because the actual plans were a bit confusing. Dr.Warren Willey gives you an exact blueprint to attacking your goal, whatever it may be. Want to lose fat and maintain muscle? He's got a plan for that. Want to build muscle and maintain fat? He's got a plan for that Want to build muscle and even lose a bit of fat in the process? It's in there too. It just takes a bit of work to construct your plan and figure out exactly what you need to do, day to day. I think it could have been layed out and worded better. But that doesn't take away from the great information that is in this book. It's wonderful and I recommend anyone who wants to learn how to eat picks up a copy. Remember... Eating is the most important piece to the fitness puzzle. Learn how to eat to achieve the results you want.

Great book!
I read this book in 2 nights. Easy reading. Author makes it a point to explain in simple terms and does a great job. The information is easy to take in and retain. It completely changed the way I look at food intake and my pre and post-workout meals/drinks. Also the importance of your carb intake timing and the effects of insulin spikes at different times of the day. Like some people have said, you can find all of this info online... BUT, I have been trying to learn about nutrition online for years and with all the contradicting information I never knew what I am sure I know now. I will always recommend this book/author. p.s. I have not used the diets in this book YET, but that is probably some of the best content in the book. I have however altered my diet based on the information provided and have been watching the pounds pour off ever since while keeping a strong focus on maintaining/building muscle mass. Don't be cheap, buy the book! It will serve as a quick reference guide in my library for years to come.

Not too bad,I like it!
He could have even made it shorter. Anyways, the book is not for pros or people who already in the BB forums, it gives bigenners the basic grounds to start bodybuilding (so no need to buy his fomer book because this one covers it and more). For people that do not know where to start or how to google, this book is for you. BUT do not depend entirly on this basic info, spend some time online searching, especially on workout plans because he did not cover them in a consistent way. Am not saying I didn't learn anything from it, I actually found Chapter 9 to be a great topic and I got quit good info from it. am taking out 2 star for the high price :) I look forward to see more books from him. This is What an Diet Book Should Be
Have you ever read a book (i.e. South Beach Diet) that turns what should be a paragraph in an article into a chapter in a book? Or have you ever read a book that was written for a doctor with so much technical jargon you have to buy a medical dictionary to get through it? *Better than Steroids* is less than 200 pages. It is an easy read. I read it in a weekend. But it's not fluff to fill a chapter. The writing is so condensed, some of it is almost in outline form. And yet it doesn't use jargon. It is mostly a straight up how to manual with just enough theory to understand why something makes sense. It provides examples. But usually just one in a very abbreviated one or two lines. He displays enough humor to sound natural, but doesn't try to be humorous. This guy sounds like a friend of yours that may be a doctor. You ask him a question. He says, "Here's how it works," and launches into a five minute explanation that makes you wonder why he had to spend ten years in school to learn this. Of course, it's typical of those who really understand their subject matter to speak with confidence and be able to make it all sounds pretty simple in a brief amount of time. Excellent book!!!

Straightforward Review of BTS
The author's point seems to be that following the nutritional advice he gives without taking steroids is better than taking steroids while hardly paying attention to what you eat at all. My opinion on that is that he's possibly right. Basically, what I think the reader should take from this book is that you can use calories FOR you--you have to eat all 3 macronutrients anyway to build muscle, so you might as well make the most of them. He discusses nutrient timing and what Arnold Schwarzenegger calls "creating demand". After you do a really hard workout, your muscles are in demand of protein, and they're also in need of carbohydrates to replace the carb stores in the muscles (glycogen). It makes sense that if you eat quality protein shortly after a hard workout, and also an adequate amount of carbohydrates, a great deal of these calories are going to go to muscle anabolism and recovery, and NOT SO MUCH TO BE STORED AS BODY FAT. He doesn't advocate eating an excess of calories, though, as there are only so many your body can use for "productive" purposes. Like any book, he makes a lot of points that I highly disagree with, but for me, ovrerall, this book was worth reading because of the helpful points he makes, and also because of the topics he discusses that further support and explain what modern experts and reliable/credible readings say about building muscle. Lastly, I want to mention that specifically, what he says about insulin was very beneficial to me - it can be your best friend (assisting muscle-building) or your worst enemy (assisting the body's natural tendency to want to store calories as fat). I highly recommend reading this book and determining what parts of it might be helpful to you.

Great info, could use some editing
This book has a lot of good information, eating plans, supplementation advice, gym-advice, etc. It's a pretty quick read and can be easily used as further reference material. The only thing that annoyed me about the book is the overly apparent need for editing. This is most noticeable in the frequent misspellings. A quick example is found in the appendix on supplements. There is a section of this chapter titled "Pysillium", this paragraph then starts, "Psyillium is a fiber found in. . .". The correct spelling is Psyllium. It drives me a little bit crazy to read a published work that I feel has simple, yet glaring errors. Beyond that I would highly recommend it. It held my attention well and has a lot to offer to those who want to improve their physique.

This book has changed my physique and my life
Thank you Dr Warren Willey for this fantastic book. I bought it looking to improve my physique and i am not disappointed. Being an athelete i must admit the cover illustration concerned me but believe me when i say, the content can be used by ANYONE looking to improve their physique/body composition. The instructions are easy to follow, the subject matter is explained clearly and conscisely and trust me when i say it does work. I personally went from a solid 16 and a half stone to a leaner, stronger 16 stone 9. Admittedly some of the content goes very indepth and strict but it is easy enough to take from it what you like and construct a fantastic life changing eating programme from the information you are given.
