I was asked last year to review Dr. East's book entitled, ”Critical Path Method (CPM) Tutor for Construction Planning and Scheduling.” I had just finished eight years immersed in construction technology which included writing and publishing an MEP specialty contractor reference guide entitled, “Achieving Spatial Coordination - Through BIM”. My professional focus during this period was squarely on the digital construction workflow and technologies engaged from the beginning of a project to the end. Dr. East’s book reminded me that there are other fundamental frameworks, outside the boundaries of technology, which remain critical to the construction process and have great impact on the project’s success or failure. Clearly, CPM is one of those fundamental frameworks engineering students and all construction participants should understand, practice and effectively integrate routinely into each of their unique construction businesses.It was not until I read each of Dr. East's CPM Tutor's Chapters that I fully understood CPM’s role, practicality, and impact it has on a building project. Dr. East uses real project details bringing relevance to the examples and models he uses to introduce and teach the constructs and use cases of CPM. My general sense is that Dr. East’s book could easily be added to existing mechanical engineering course outlines or curriculum to further enhance adequate student preparation for real-world construction scheduling techniques.

The key to every good written work is to keep your audience in mind. This book is perfect for any level student of scheduling or construction fundamentals. It is straightforward yet informative for the novice or expert construction scheduler. Perhaps most beneficial are the thorough glossary and index at the back of the book.If you did not know that Dr. East was an established expert in the field of the future of construction and facility information exchange, you should become familiar with COBie. It is refreshing that even expert "futurists" still understand the importance of fundamental keys to successful projects -- sound scheduling. Dr. East is helping ensure the future is better off with students of this book.
