Amazing tool
I carry this tool every day and love it. I find myself using it on a regular basis and it always performs. I am a carpenter/contractor which means I already own many full sized versions of the tools included in this piece, but that doesn't mean I have them on my person all the time. If I'm on a job and need to make a quick cut, crimp, turn of a bolt or screw it used to mean wearing my 30lb framers belt all day, or stopping to go the my tool bag or truck. Now, just a flip of the velcro flap on my belt and I'm on to the next thing, saving time and money. This tool has more than paid for itself for this reason alone. The case is very heavy nylon which holds its shape to allow easy deployment and insertion. Also the open sides on the top and bottom prevent debris build up with is very beneficial to me (I pretty much pour saw dust out of my pockets at the end of the day). The compound action of the pliers is amazing. You can cut, crimp, or pinch anything with ease which is rare for most multi tools because of their size and shape. The multiple screwdriving bits are sturdy and effective with the piano key type lockup allowing you to put sufficient force on them without having fear of the bit closing on your fingers or damaging finished surfaces. The 2 blades are very useful as well, and for some may suffice as an EDC set. Though I still carry a dedicated knife for that purpose, it never hurts to have options. I tend to use these blades for tasks that could result in damage to a blade I wouldn't want my pocket knife going through. They both hold an edge very well and sharpen easily. I usually only have to touch them up every week or so. Which brings me to another great design feature of this tool. SOG carries a full line of replacement tools/blades so the fear of breaking a piece and rendering a $60 tool useless is put to rest, as well as giving the option for customization. Some may have an issue with the weight, but between all the other items I have on me 24/7, I don't notice it at all, as well as it being a testimate to its strength and durability. If I could think of any con it would be the sliding locks for the 2 blades. They have a very short throw allowing them to accidentally engage. I noticed this the first day I owned this tool and quickly fixed it with a single drop of super glue to permanently lock them in the off position, as I also feel they're unnecessary with the sprung tension on the blades. I've never had one open on my accidentally. I love this thing and know it will last for years to come, through all the use and abuse I have planned for it.

Almost perfect!
I've been in and around construction/maintenance for over 20 years and just recently realized the value of a good multi-tool at your side. The ones I usually see are cheaply made or were more trouble to use to be of any benefit. Then I picked up a beat-up SOG Powerlock at a garage sale for 10 bucks. Not realizing what I had it sat for months unused until I did some research on SOG products. I ordered a sheath for it from SOG and it became indispensable. You really do use it more than you think you would. Then I saw the Power Assist! Basically the same as the Powerlock but with the 2 assisted opening blades which are truly awesome and fun to work with. It's truly a one-handed tool as far as the blades and the pliers are concerned. And let's face it the pliers are what most people will use the most. A lot has been said about the compound leverage gears and it's all true. I played with a Leathermen SURGE at a retailer alongside a power Assist before I bought mine. The Surge was VERY heavy and took a lot just to open up the pliers. it was very stiff. Perhaps it needed a little breaking in. The Power Assist by comparison opens buttery smooth. You can flip it open one-handed. Imagine a Hummer doing Tai-Chi! This tool is a "machine" in my opinion. It has gears, it has a precision build to it you have to feel to appreciate. I had already preordered a wood saw to replace the V-cut tool it comes with as this would be more useful to me. (I put the V-cut tool on my key ring to have as an emergency seat-belt cutter where I could actually get to it) Yes, the other tools take a little effort to pull out, but are hardly a reason to pass on such a great product. If you don't care about the assisted blades a regular Power lock will give you a few more tools and options, better yet get them both! August 2012 update: Still going strong! I've been using this five days a week since Nov 2010. Being in maintenance I use this at least four times a day. Nothing has broken on me yet. The power-assist blades still pop out like on the first day of use. I've read quite a few negative reviews about pliers breaking and philips heads snapping. Perhaps SOG got a bad batch of steel, I don't know. Mine has performed flawlessly day in and out. I don't baby it, and actually take pride in the little scratches and wear it gets. The black oxide coating has held up beautifully. It's almost like it's actually black steel, and not a coating. It has worn off a little on the rounded rivets and some edges, more character! I was looking for a lighter weight multi-tool for non-work EDC, and was leaning toward the Leatherman REBAR. They make great products, but for FIVE dollars more I ordered another Powerassist satin finish, a gorgeous looking tool. When you've used the smooth opening pliers, it's hard to go back to the traditional clunky opening ones. Even the extra weight doesn't bother me, it's actually comforting, feeling it on your belt. No other multi-tool is truly as one-handed as this with regards to the pliers and blades, and in an emergency when you may only have one hand I don't trust anything else. One last thing, Leatherman offers a 25 year warranty, SOG tools have a LIFETIME warranty, and if you break the implements you can ORDER new ones and install them yourself! A no-brainer guys (and gals). October 2013 update: Added the 1/4" driver a while back and bought the bit kit from SOG. now I can use any 1/4" bits. Still can't seem to break this thing. Don't baby it at all.

Nearly 10 years, still going strong
I bought this pocket tool almost 10 years ago and it’s still holding up amazingly. First how I have used this: I was a corporate trainer for a large restaurant company, and I would travel to open brand new restaurants (with lots of new equipment and problems). This was my every tool (including being used as a doorstop to hold open countless walk-in coolers). I’m also a sport angler, and I use this as my hip pliers (removing hooks regularly and leaving up the cord cutter for cutting fishing line, both mono and braided). In addition, I do work on small two-stroke engines, and many times have reached for this tool rather than my other sets of pliers. And finally, I recently constructed a Tiny Home from the floor up with my trusty SOG at my side. My particular tool has been used and abused!! Other than regular cleaning, tightening (which is made easy to do for the blades, player heads and all flip out accessories) and the occasional sharpening I’ve had to do nothing to maintain this tool. The knives both spring quickly out and keep tight for a good amount of time. The biggest selling point for this tool for me was the ability to open the knife with one hand. Works perfectly for this. I love the pliers because they very slightly taper down right at the end, leaving them strong but also petite enough to fit into a lot of hard places (was very helpful when doing small engine work). They are stronger than expected, and the wire cutters have just begun to dull and chip (you can see from the pictures the condition after 10 years) For fishing, I found that locking the cord cutter in the up position and putting it back in the holster kept it safely out of the way but easily accessible when changing lures often for that selective fish. The black oxide coating has held up very well, along with the genera construction of the tool (and I have for sure treated it roughly over the years). My only complaint is the safety lock for the spring loaded knives is loose and regularly slips to the “on” positions. Meaning when I remove it with one hand and flick open the knife I must pause, turn off the safety, and then flick open again. Annoying and time consuming, but still doable with one hand and only happens every so often. In conclusion, this is easily the best tool investment I’ve made in my life. I have used this tool in more applications, for more years, and with less maintenance or problems than any tool or spent money on. Get this tool if you don’t want 100 useless accessories but need an quick access blade and durable, versatile set of pliers. I find myself making a review because it’s finally time for another set (only because I am gifting my old pair to the GF, who has taken up fishing) PROS: Durable Easy access knives Strong and versatile pliers Good accessories, no extra fluff CONS: Safety for knives

Exelent LIGHT DUTY, multi tool
Totally in love with the knife. But let's get some things out of the way, this is a light duty E.D.C. tool, let's make that REALLY REALLY clear regardless of what anyone tells you. The tools on it are THIN, so don't think for a second you're going to be going APE with any tasks; including the pliers, because they WILL BREAK. Now with that out of the way, this is a specialized needs tool, as a beefy light duty edc tool it works in spades. Zero issues with the assisted blades, or with the safety not working, works fast and deploys like a switch blade instantly. Comes covered in black oil, so you're going to want to rub the entire thing down with some napkins until the black no longer prints on them. On Sog's webpage in the accessory section you can also buy parts and swap internal tools out for dollars, stuff is low cost, I swapped the V-cutter out for scissors with zero issues. I use this thing to open boxes, rebuild on my E-CIG; pliers for cotton, pliers for twisting coil ends off to size, added scissors for cutting cotton, Phillips head for atomizer screws, open caned food daily, serrated for rope. For these light duty tasks and the occasional added duty it works crazy good, and should indeed last me a life time. But always keep in mind the tools limitations, it is not built for hard core use, regardless of what anyone tries to pitch you. If you want a tactical edc multitool for pocket carry, that mixes combat styling and form, with every day civvy mos, then this little number is your ticket. But don't you dare for a second try to pretend this is a Zero Tolerance Combat knife, a Mora Bush-craft blade, or a Leatherman OHT. It is absolutely not, this peculator multi-tool is for a niche market. Will update as time goes on, but so far, overall this thing goes beyond my expectations and needs.

AWESOME multi tool, AMAZING Customer Service from SOG!!!
Here's the short version of what's below: 1) Very tough, excellent quality tool. 2) SOG as a manufacturer, and their LIFETIME WARRANTY are among the best in the industry (according to MY experience) 3) So buy it with confidence. Beat it up. SOG will stand behind their products! 4) The all black coating is kinda bad ass so extra cool points. Ok if you're still reading... here's my review: Let me start by saying this: I own a number of multi tools: a Leatherman Wave, Wingman, Rev, and Skeletool. I also own a Gerber MP600, Dime, and Suspension. And they're ALL great tools, so you won't be getting any comparisons from me. But I have a fair bit of experience with using all these tools over the years. So I purchased this SOG Power Assist multi tool right here on Amazon back in 2012. I wish I had taken pics of it and how I've used it over the years, because I've put it thru the grinder! It's been used well. Not abused, but used to it's full potential since I've owned it. I used it to build a dog run and I've cut tie wire to build a fence with it. I've used the end of it to beat down the lid on a paint can. Actually multiple paint and stain cans as I've used it while painting at work, at home, and any number of "Honey Do" projects for my wife. I've used it to repair a leak on my radiator, wire electrical outlets, and cable TV. It's repaired and tuned up my lawn mower, line trimmer, and leaf blower. It's on my belt every time I do yard work, and for every single home project I've worked on since buying it. It's been really good to me, and I've had nothing but good experience with this tool. Fast forward to August 2019. Now here's where things change a little bit. For the worse and then...for the better. I started to notice that the blade assisted opening wasn't working as well anymore. After seven years of serious service I wasn't surprised. To make matters worse, the blade also would no longer lock while in the open position OR when it was closed. That can be dangerous, so I ended up just leaving this multitool in it's sheath on my dresser, and pulled out my Leatherman Wave and just started using that one. (Great tool as well btw!) BUT, I really missed the SOG power assist pliers and wire cutters because of that cam/compound thing... They are SO good! Cuts wire like butter! So... I started shopping for a new SOG power assist multi tool, and since it's been 7 years I thought I'd look at SOG's website for a newer model. What I found was SOG's LIFETIME Warranty. It was such a simple warranty process! I printed a PDF form from their website, filled it out, then packed the form and my SOG into a small Priority Mail box...and a week later I got a brand new Power Assist multi tool!!!! I was hopeful they'd at least repair it, and they exceeded my expectations! Not only is this a great tool... But I can attest to SOG standing behind their warranty!

beast of a multi-tool
I purchased this multi tool April of 2017, it broke on me today (March 2026). I have carried this absolute beast in my pocket for 9 years, I have physically abused it daily (steel industry), used it as a hammer, prybar, and whatever other ungodly things I could put it though. the amount of times this tool has came in handy, uncountable. yes it broke, but I couldn't have asked for a better lifespan than 9 years.

The Brietling of Multitools
I purchased this product when the blade on my 6-year-old leatherman kick snapped in half. After some intense research, I had narrowed my choices down to two products, Gerber Flik-MultiPlier, and the SOG Power Assist Black Oxide. Conveniently, two of my friends happened to own these very tools. I was intrigued by the Gerber's sliding-pliers design, and it was originally my first choice. However, after being given free reign over the tool for a day, I found that the feature was more of a boon than a benefit. The mechanism lacked intuitive operation, and significantly decreased the handle-throw of the pliers. The outboard tools were nice, but often ended up flipping out via their own means, as the tool cover was not particularly good at its job. The Gerber, as I see it, was an attempt at innovation, but fell slightly short of the mark. When I was given the SOG to use for a day, the first thing I noticed was the weight. It is significantly heavier than the Gerber, and (at least to me) this was a sign of much higher durability and build quality. The pliers moved very smoothly, and had more throw than I had ever seen, made possible by the geared movement. The tool cover latched into place securely, and the tools are located on the inside, adding an extra degree of security. After admiring all the utility-bits, I moved on to the flagship feature of the product, the blades. The spring assist mechanism is extremely reliable (I have never had a single failed deployment), and is highly addicting. The blades move out just as quickly as on a spring assist pocket-knife, and are unnervingly sharp out of the box. The locking mechanism is solid, if not excessive, and is very easy to reset. In all, this is probably the best multi tool I have used, and owned, to date. SOG may not be well known, but I truly feel sorry for their lack of recognition, as they have created a work of engineering brilliance.

A superior tool and a great gift.
I purchased this a a gift for my father and I own the same tool in the plain stainless steel finish. It's a great multi-tool. Super durable and just plain beefy. If you're looking for a light little pocket knife/tool this probably isn't it. Maybe a Leatherman Squirt or even a SOG Paratool. The black finish is actually a lot nicer than the stainless steel because it doesn't show fingerprints as badly. I have found that this tool has replaced my daily carry pocket knife (a SOG Flash II) for a couple of reasons. First, the pair of assisted blades. Having a quick choice between the straight or serrated blades rather than having both in one blade is nice. The other thing is that carrying a multi-tool rather than a dedicated pocket knife tends to be less intimidating to people in the general public. When I pull out the Flash II people's eyes tend to widen a little and they make snarky comments. The PowerAssist blends right in as just another tool for most people and the only raised eyes and comments have been from folks admiring the thing. The fold-out tools are of the same super high quality and the locking mechanism works well. I also appreciate the V-Cutter for cutting paracord, straps, etc. I wish there was a more elegant way to operate the little cover that goes over the tools, but it serves it's purpose well in allowing a very comfortable grip on the pliers. This thing makes an awesome gift. My father received his and called me within minutes of opening to talk about how nice it was and how he'd probably never need another multi-tool again. It will definitely be appreciated by those who are handy, or who work on machines for a living. Although, one of the things my dad mentioned was that he wasn't sure when he would ever need the blasting cap crimper, but hey, ya can't win 'em all. :) Great tool, 5 stars, you will not be sorry that you purchased this tool and the price on Amazon pretty much cannot be beat.

Execellent multitool. Highly recomend this
Very handy multitool for pretty much everything you need these for. I have cut thin sheet metal with this multitool with ease. Definitely worth it. Serrated blade comes in useful whenever I need to cut open a bag or cardboard box

Stupendo
