Includes Parts 1 & 2 Often disguised as something that would help him, evil accompanies Christian on his journey to the Celestial City. As you walk with him, you’ll begin to identify today’s many religious pitfalls. These are presented by men such as Pliable, who turns back at the Slough of Despond; and Ignorance, who believes he’s a true follower of Christ when he’s really only trusting in himself. Each character represented in this allegory is intentionally and profoundly accurate in its depiction of what we see all around us, and unfortunately, what we too often see in ourselves. But while Christian is injured and nearly killed, he eventually prevails to the end. So can you. The best part of this book is the Bible verses added to the text. The original Pilgrim’s Progress listed the Bible verse references, but the verses themselves are so impactful when tied to the scenes in this allegory, that they are now included within the text of this book. The text is tweaked just enough to make it readable today, for the young and the old. Youngsters in particular will be drawn to the original illustrations included in this wonderful classic. About the Author John Bunyan was born November 1628, in Elstow, England. A celebrated English minister and preacher, he wrote The Pilgrim's Progress (1678), the book that was the most characteristic expression of the Puritan religious outlook. His other works include doctrinal and controversial writings; a spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding (1666); and the allegory The Holy War (1682) Review: A Must Read! - Bunyan successfully gave a faithful account of a Christian’s journey. Many, if not all, of Christian’s encounters were highly relatable. The highest strength of this book (and what I loved the most about it) is its deep roots in the Scriptures. I do not exaggerate when I say there’s a corresponding bible verse for every other sentence in Pilgrim’s Progress. I was profoundly impressed by Bunyan’s extensive knowledge of Scriptures and his ability to infuse it throughout his book. Charles Spurgeon even called Bunyan a living Bible and said, “Read anything of his [Bunyan’s], and you will see that it is almost like reading the Bible itself. He had read it till his very soul was saturated with Scripture…prick him anywhere; his blood is Bibline; the very essence of the Bible flows from him. He cannot speak without quoting a text, for his very soul is full of the Word of God.” Not only is Pilgrim’s Progress filled with Scriptures, but it is also faithful to it. It gives a clear and accurate presentation of the Gospel of Christ, not a watered version popular in the evangelical world today. I also enjoyed the biblical lessons in every stage of the book. Even when Christian encountered troubles I hadn’t, I learned a few things that will help recognize the enemy's trap. And I also enjoyed the poetry/song Christian recited at the end of every trial. On the flip side, I found the book a bit difficult to read. I can easily spend hours reading a book, but for some reason, I couldn’t read more than a chapter per day with this one. Perhaps it is because of the different writing style or because it was written a long time ago. Whatever the case, it was not a can’t-put-it-down book for me. But it's probably for the best, as it allowed me to digest the material slowly. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the book. It made me reflect on my faith journey and examine myself. It also provided me with valuable resources to keep me on the true path of righteousness. For instance, Christian’s sole focus on God convicted me and made me realize I let myself get too distracted by worldly things instead of fixing my eyes on Christ. Also, the sufficiency of Scripture for all of Christian’s troubles inspired me. And I was enormously encouraged by how Christian and his fellow resisted a specific obstacle and the means they used to overcome it. My recommendation Pilgrim’s Progress is for the everyday Christian, as it depicts general things all believers can expect from the moment we have been regenerated to when we die and go to heaven. Therefore, I recommend all Christians to read it! Especially new believers. The book is so theologically rich that I cannot imagine any Christian reading it without learning something that will grow them in their faith. Non-Christians should also read it because it is an excellent introduction to the Christian life. However, as it doesn’t have much apologetics, non-believers who are skeptical but warm towards Christianity might benefit from it. Review: Wonderful! Love this Version! - I've had the classic original version for many years. My husband wanted the updated version with modern English. This is marvelous. It's a beautiful book from cover to cover. This allegory of salvation is priceless. It's the journey we all must take if we are to have an eternal home with the Lord. After the Holy Bible, this is the most popular and most-read book in history. A must-read for ALL!

The Pilgrim's Progress to Heaven
Reading Pilgrim's Progress has been an enjoyable adventure. When you say that an author has presented his works in an entirely new way you are probably repeating what you have stated before about another author. Recently I read a business book written with a fictional storyline, and I stated that this was a unique way for an author to maintain your interest and here it is happening again. John Bunyan wrote a religious book, Pilgrim's Progress, with a unique fictional storyline. So, I'm repeating myself in saying that it's rare when an author writes about a major topic utilizing a fictional storyline; this has been going on for a long time and I'm sure will continue as long as there are writers. John had a clever way of giving his characters their names; such as Christian, Evangelist, Honest, etc. (Each fitting a particular situation in the story). I felt this application added to the story and gave you little doubt as to the make up of the particular character or to their placement in the story. I especially liked how the author would fit a specific verse or verses of the Bible within the story as a highlight or emphasis as additional explanation for the reader. I started highlighting these while reading and found them to amount to an additional Bible study as well as an important part of the story. I'm sure that Pilgrim's Progress was on my list of required reading in high school but I found it to be a fresh new read; maybe because of the difference in my age now, approximately 70 years older, then when I was in high school. I recommend that you read Pilgrim's Progress with an open mind and just enjoy...

A must read CLASSIC in a nicely done Hardcover
I added a lot of photos to this review because often it's hard to tell how large a book is, what the size is, and how the printing and images look. Hope this helps you. While this is a modern written version it's still wonderful. It's a decent hard cover version I got on sale. This book probably won't last 200 years like my 1823 version has, but it's nice for the price. It has both volumes that were written with the second explaining what happened to Christian's Wife and Kids. It has plenty of the old photos sprinkled throughout. It's a decent copy for those who want an easy read or gift to someone. This is One of the most powerful books ever penned next to the Bible I've ever read. Comparing both Modern English and old English versions there is a stark difference. I know many people don't like old English but in my personal opinion it's far more beautifully written. I plan on also buying the unabridged version to read it the way Bunyan wrote it. The old English version is very much like reading something from William Shakespeare. But this modern version is an easy read for those who want something familiar. Either way it's a classic and a MUST READ! If you haven't read this book stick it on your bucket list but read it NOW and not later. It can change your life.

A very nice book, but...
This book contains Biblical quotations in italics sandwiched into the text and throwing off the narrative with constant distractions. It's nice that they created this "help" but I wish it had been in footnotes rather than within the body of the text. It also appears to be a recovered old edition in new garb, with some 100 black and white illustrations taken from the original book. There is no foreword or introduction which would have helped greatly. These are my qualms. On the plus side it seems to be a sturdy volume (I bought the hardcover) and the pages are a comfortable weight and possibly even archival. The typeface is very readable for these senior eyes. I will read it, of course, I'll just have to read it with a two-track mind. separating text from Biblical passages. I gave it four stars because it is well made and useful, but the problem of in-line quotations make this not the best version I could have purchased.

Hood version
We are reading/discussing in our home fellowship group. Several versions are represented and this one seems to be a winner. I often read aloud the weeks portion of study and several people have asked that i order this version to replace what they have. Scriptures are printed inline with story which is nice. It reads easily yet feels ...proper?--in keeping with original. The story is not cut that I can tell as first book I purchased was. --this follows original closely. Print is decent size i suppose. Has Bunyan's illustrations. Binding is holding up so far The book is a classic and is of great value for our walk. As a seeker or follower of Christ, Pilgrim's Progress will submit its life lessons to the reader a new, every time one takes the tine to read. Practical, deep, introspective, scripture tested & all around good story for the ages.

Wonderfully Updated !
I have an 1894 copy of Pilgrim's Progress which I read many years ago. Now in my later 70s I started to read it again but found I was having to stop and look up the meaning of some words and many scriptures. I'm now reading this updated copy and appreciate its accuracy to the original text and the inclusion of the scriptures, also noting when an alternate scripture is being used. (In that case, the original scripture is included at the bottom of the page.) It is interesting to look back on my Christian life and see how I fell prey to various situations the allegory expresses. Well worth reading!

Aneko Press publisher ( Kindle version ) Reveiw .
This is a review of Aneko Press ( The publisher is key to correct paring of review ) updated Kindle Edition .This is the complete original Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan i. It has been slightly updated , the neat part is what ever they have changed , updated they give you the original phrasing as along side it . The really great thing is that they also print the whole scripture verse Bunyan is using to support his Auto Biographical Allegory . It also includes the 100 early wood cut pictures in their entirety , ( Note : the hard back would be a great edition to your Library if you do not already have a illustrated Pilgrim's Progress . This makes this a great devotional tool and a great teaching tool . God used J.Bunyan in a remarkable way as he had minimal schooling thus he learned to write , spell and compose sentences based on his learning to read and through the study of the English Bible , basically self taught ( I would say Holy spirit taught ,but that might offend some ) . He has been recognized as the first writer of the English Novel . Many doubted that such an unlearned man could have written this book . His response was to write 'The Holy War " an allegory on the war between Satan and his army in the taking of the City of Man's Soul and its recovery by God The Father Son and Holy Spirit and the following attacks made on man's soul for the rest of his mortal life . ( This book also available by Aneko Press ) Note this Aneko Press has a number of Christian Classics in print , Paper back;, hardback ; digital Kindle . They are to be highly commended for the service they are doing to keep these treasures available . First Class would give them 10 stars if I could .

A great edition of a timeless classic !
This is a beautiful and affordable edition of a great and timeless classic. Most editions of "Pilgrims Progress" contain only the 1st part of the story. The equally readable 2nd part (or sequel) depicting the tale of Christian's wife (Christiana) and her children is not not normally included. This edition gives you both stories and is really a complete edition. It also has numerous illustrations in black & white - very tastefully done for pleasurable viewing and also as an aid to understanding the stories. Since this is primarily a religious allegorical (symbolic) tale, it is used for pious reading by many and the story also makes countless references (direct or indirect) to Holy Scriptures. This edition not only gives references of each of the Scriptures being quoted but also reproduces them in their entirety ! This is a very valuable feature to deep lovers of this work. If you are looking among various editions for the best one, I highly recommend this one to you. It also has regular English easily understandable and avoids the original but archaic English of John Bunyan. Get it. Read it throughout your life. Books like this never age !!

A must read for every Christian!!
This was a great read and will be an awesome tool for my own walk with Christ. The honesty of how we struggle and the simplicity of the Gospel is very well portrayed. “Bitter before the sweet” what a great reminder of trials before glory.

Excellent for Reading During Camino
I actually read much of Pilgrims Progress while walking on pilgrimage from St Jean & Porto, back to Santiago. Any book that encourages good behaviour is a must read.
