Winsor & Newton scepter gold II brushes are the perfect mix of Sable and synthetic giving the performance of a Sable at the price of synthetic. Artists generally recognize that pure Sable brushes are the best, but costly, so consideration of price may compel many to use a synthetic brush instead. However, while today's synthetic brushes perform better than ever, pure Sable still has the edge. This is why Winsor & Newton offers scepter gold II, a brush that's made from a blend of pure Sable and synthetic fibers, giving you a performance that is close to Sable at a price that is close to synthetic. The blend of hair in scepter gold II also gives you added benefits. Sable hair has excellent spring while the high quality synthetic filaments ensure that the brushes are soft enough to work the color but also have a strong snap so they return back to their original shape with ease. The high proportion of Sable in scepter gold II gives the brushes considerably more ability to make larger washes in one stroke than normal synthetic brushes and the hairs are tapered to a fine point, giving the brush control for detailed work. Scepter gold II brushes are ideal for working with watercolor and fluid oil color but are also suitable for use with acrylic, water mixable oil and alkyd Fast drying oil color. Each scepter gold II brush has a copper-colored handle and a seamless, gold-colored ferrule. Review: Great soft brushes - I bought these long handles, soft brushes per my oil painting instructor’s advice and they have been great to use with expressive brush strokes and also easy to clean. They may be great watercolor brushes but I have not used them for water media ( yet). Review: This is my go to brush. - This is my go to brush. I like them better than the Windsor & Newton Series 7. They're cost effective and last a decent amount of time. I'm fairly hard on my brushes, so the blend of true sable and synthetic hairs respond well with a variety of paints - acrylic, egg tempera, watercolor and even oil. They are on occasion uneven in their quality. So I would go through a handful and pick the best brushes if you have direct access at an art supply store. That being said they are of decent quality about 85% of the time. The Series #202 have longer hair than the #101's but are shorter than the #303 (riggers - pinstripe brush). The #202's are perfect for working detail. The paint load will lasts long enough to move through rendering at a good speed.

Useless as a rigger brush
This review is for the W&N Sceptre Gold #3 Rigger brush. I'd like to start by saying that I have Sceptre Gold brushes that are 25 years old and still giving excellent service, however this new brush, sadly, is, in a word, junk. The top of the brush is cut flat, making it impossible to come to a sharp point, which is of course crucial to a rigger brush. In addition, the hairs on the sides of the brush want to stick out no matter how wet the brush is. These two issues result in it being useless for long, fine lines- the ONE thing a rigger is designed to do. When the Sceptre synthetic/sable blend brushes came out over 25 years ago, they were quite a breakthrough, however synthetic brushes have come a long way in the past few years. Both the Cotman as well as Daler Rowney Aquafine brushes (to name just a couple), are both far better brushes at half the price than this brush, and those are entirely synthetic. I have been using the Sceptre Gold line of watercolor brushes for many years. This is my last one.

Ottimo strumento, anche se mi aspettavo che il manico fosse molto più corto, è di 29cm!
