Garmin Overlander, Rugged Multipurpose Navigator for Off-Grid Guidance

I purchased this device to prior to departing on a cross country road trip that would include significant off road driving in public lands and long periods without cell service. While there is much discussion in online forums regarding the value of the overlander vs several subscription map apps for mobile devices, for my use I found the overlander had several advantages. 1. As I knew I would be without cell service (or wifi for that matter) for extended periods of time, having to download maps in advance posed a problem. Any mistake in pre-loading maps, or loss of data would have left me in a difficult position. With the overlander I knew I had the coverage required in advance with less risk. Having a dedicated device for navigation let me save battery life and use of other devices for other purposes. 2. In my experience purpose built gps devices tend to have better receivers than mobile devices, particularly when cellular or wifi augmentation is not available. I had some issues with the speaker on the initial device I received along with some stability problems. I contacted Garmin support late one night by email and noted that I was leaving for a long trip in less than a week and needed the device for that purpose. By early the next morning I received a reply that due to the issue I described an my impending trip Garmin would overnight me a new unit and sent a label to return the first. The same support employee maintained contact with me through the process, ensured an imagery subscription purchased for the first unit was transferred to the replacement. While it was a bit disconcerting that I had issues with the first unit, the responsiveness and thoroughness of the customer service was excellent, truly. Beyond the expected quality of the normal on road nav features, the real selling point of the Overlander is the capability to route and navigate overland using topo maps. After driving several hundred miles through BLM and Forest service lands I confirm these features work well and were helpful planning and changing my itinerary on the go in response to conditions. Overall I find the integration of quality maps, hardware and user interface combine to make the device a useful tool for those who will take advantage of the unique features. If your use case does not include significant off highway travel I would not expect the value to be the same compared to more typical gps or mobile apps.

Awesome device, I keep it in my Ford Ranger all the time as it's a much better unit than the stock Ford Sync 3 which is terrible. It's worth the Look-ahead features alone on long trips and the elevation feature. Another key feature is tapping on the off-road map and seeing who's property you're on or about to go on. The historical POI feature is also very cool, not only providing distance and directions but also nice details about the historical site. I took the unit off road on trails near Arches National Park and both Ford Sync and my iPhone GPS's crapped out but the Overlander did not on remote trails. This device provides great situational awareness as to what's around you (private property, trials, historical sites, camping...). It does have one big problem and that's the suction cup magnetic friction mount. It doesn't have enough friction so even small bumps cause it to tilt down to the point it is very annoying. My unit is over a year old, not sure if Garmin fixed this or if there's an after-market product that fixes this.

Garmin Overlander SUCKS ! I bought one march 3, 2025 and it malfunctioned. Returned it and purchased another one on March 19, 2024. Since then I have had nothing but problems, almost too numerous to mention. • Garmin's website is worthless and their techs, although trying their best to be helpful are not able to keep up with the infinite number of products, updates, revisions, problems, solutions etc. If you don't believe me just Google Garmin reviews. • First and foremost problem: iI was out in the middle of nowhere and using the Overlander to navigate the maze of roads. The unit crashed and it requires and internet connection to reset and re-boot. WTF ! I was so far out of cell range....on purpose. ! • Next the Explore function would not work w/o re-establishing/resetting my Garmin Base Camp account which again required an internet connection. BTW Garmin Base Camp sucks. • In regular city/Drive nav. mode Overlander does not show posted speed limits like my old Garmin Nuvies do.WTF ! • Keeps asking to pair device and cannot eliminate message or loop if do not elect to pair w/a phone. WTF ! • When you switch to Explore mode while moving it does not display your current location centered on map - you have to zoom out, find your current position icon and re-center. • Waypoints entered in Drive nav. mode do not transfer over to Explore nav. mode. WTF ! • When you get a "Stopped Navigating" message it will not allow you to turn the unit off. • When you set Coordinates to Deg, Min, Sec. in main display "Current Location" in the Explore window does not show current location coordinates in Deg, Min, Sec. - it only shows coordinates in Deg. decimal minutes WTF ! • Garmin tried to "merge" into one unit their basic street GPS units like the Nuvie line with a backcountry roads nav. system and the short version is that there are a lot of problems starting with Garmin being world-wide did not originally elect to use the US USGS 7.5 min. maps and developer their own proprietary maps - which by comparison to the old USGS maps suck. Fast forward to US demand and Garmin is trying to integrate the USGS maps into their systems - which causes a lot of problems. This is just a partial list of issues and problems I've had w/the Garmin Overlander. The big problem with Garmin as whole is that in order to stay ahead of the competition and be "first to market" a new product Garmin does not adequacy test and work all the bugs out of their products. They rely on their 'Service after Sale" which is beyond deplorable to say the least. The big problem is that if you are like me and you purchased Garmin products a long time ago and have a considerable amount of data collected over the years, you are pretty much wedded/committed to sticking w/Garmin....which sucks. To change would be like trying to go from Microsoft to Apple ! Previous review: Typical Garmin POS - didn't work - couln't download GPX files - my list of complaints is too long to mention - Garmin is absolutely THE worst when it comes to "service after sale." Their manuals suck, their instructions suck - and they do not seem to give a s***** - WTF !

Now that I understand it, this is a GREAT unit. But I had to figure it out by myself. I spent HOURS on the 'phone to resolve issues, to no avail. They couldn't even tell me that the USB converter needed to power the thing was available EVERYWHERE! After spending 40 bucks on a converter that didn't fit (and I mean the male plugs looked like they would have been right at home in Islamabad) I discovered that I had the correct adapter -- several of them -- laying around my house! So go ahead and buy it. It's got a lot of great features, such as the ability to download USGS Quads. But also get a wig, because you'll be tearing out your hair figuring it out!

The GPS works well but there is a learning curve to figure out the features and it is not intuitive. To get quad maps you have to have cell service (and tether the wifi to your phone) and I can't figure out how to load them ahead of time for the area your planning on being in. The quad maps that are loaded are not the latest but so far most of the roads in the forest have been displayed. Other features are still eluding me .... To make best use of the machine you really need an overall paper map to refer to. The window mount works well for me and the unit seems well sealed for dust and moisture, like the big screen. Bought the screen protector with it but it didn't work out , got air bubbles and folds in it so removed it. I don't know how it compares to competitors but in the past GarmIn has been good about support with my other GPS's when I had a problem so I'm a returning customer and would buy it again.

What an outstanding device! Comes with City Navigator 2020, free access to all the aerial photos you want, free topo maps, Open Street Maps, and more! I use it for both on and off-road frequently, and it has worked flawlessly. The magnetic mount keeps it secure, even when doing serious rock crawling in Johnson Valley etc... I did but it on sale for 100 off, but honestly, after having used it for a bit, I would pay full price for it. There are some things I would really like to see done (like ability to add the California Trail Maps to it), but they are adding new things frequently and I expect it to just get better!

I was hesitant in purchasing this unit. Glad I did. The screen is bright and clear, and the voice commands work better than the older Garmin models. I like the big LCD screen, fits and looks fine in my Prius. I have not used the iExplore side, just the regular road maps. The pitch and roll function is accurate, but I don't have a use for it today. Another reason I bought this is was to relive my cellphone and use it as a phone, and not complicate all the gadgets while driving. I also bought the Garmin inReach Mini, to pair this up with. I now have a cellphone, a GPS system, and a satellite communication unit, just in case our world decides to goes to war. Keep in touch!

I’m willing to bet that this will be a fantastic product if they continue to work on it for another 2 to 3 years, unless they give up and come out with a different product and abandon this one. I’m beginning to feel like GARMIN R&D develops products like an ADHD five-year-old. “If it’s good enough to be operable by the Christmas ship date we’re done developing it.” That’s what I feel like whenever I try to operate this model with the expectations that I had built up waiting for it for two years. And I’m not saying this because it’s too complex, it’s basically the exact same GARMIN that I’ve owned for the last five years, except this one will not communicate with my cell phone or any of the GARMIN apps whatsoever! And after ordering two different in car power cord traffic antennas, they tell me that the State Of Michigan apparently does not support this feature! But my five-year-old $200 GARMIN dead GARMIN did????? When I called tech-support they all say that what I really need is the next newest model that they built for motorcycles! For my off-road vehicle/commuter? WTF?!

Awesome unit. Wish there was more base options ! And price point was a little lower.

I had been using the Montana prior to this. The magnet holds the GPS in place very well. Maps are up to date. Easy to make tracks on the computer which then automatically transfer to the unit (as long as there is wifi). Camping locations abound - Every type. Screen is very clear and easy to navigate. We use it in our Jeep with a teardrop trailer. We can use the "on-road" map when on main roads and switch to the "offload" version with the touch of a button.

Welp. That will teach me for buying used on Amazon I guess. Did not come in Original dmaged box as stated. Item showed up without the ram ball mount attachment and I thought oh well, could be worse… Well it was... I then I tried usb and the lighter cord to charge it; it would not take a charge. Tried several times to charge it. Wouldn’t work. I would think Amazon has better standards for used items listed on here? Guess not. Just glad Amazon has a good return policy (hopefully)…

This is a mash up of street GPS, trail navigation. Unfortunately, in doing so, Garmin left out features from both systems. e.g. No link to traffic data via app? The screen is very pleasing and the unit is very responsive. As usual, Canadian users miss out on some map features. Overall it's a nice unit but way overpriced. Note: Price is starting to come down already. I'm expecting this unit to be discontinued quickly.
