It states in the description that it is BPA free, however that doesn't mean it's BPF- or BPS-free, so BPA free is now basically meaningless, and the specific type of plastic used isn't stated. As for whether or not in comes into contact with your food (per another answer), in many/most cases, the process of grinding causes abrasions in the plastic that leave it with a scratched/filmy look over even just the first few uses, which means that tiny bits of plastic are, in fact, coming off of the top and getting into the food. However, I have not yet been able to track down any grinder that has a glass top, so beyond this dismal PSA, I have little to offer in terms of advice. Hope this helps.

Can the bowl be removed for cleaning?

Bowl does not come out. I clean with a moist paper towel about once a month. I just keep the lid on so that foreign matter does not collect in the bowl.
