Klein Tools VDV226-107 Compact Ratcheting Modular Data Cable Crimper / Wire S...

I first noticed this Klein crimper on job sites — several techs were using it, and they all had good things to say about it. After picking one up for myself and using it on multiple installs, I understand why. This compact ratcheting crimper makes terminating RJ45 connectors clean and consistent. The ratcheting mechanism applies even pressure, so you don’t get partial crimps or loose connections like with cheaper tools. It feels solid in the hand, and the build quality is exactly what you’d expect from Klein. The integrated wire stripper and cutter are a big plus — it keeps everything streamlined so you’re not constantly switching tools. I’ve used it on CAT5e and CAT6 terminations, and the results have been reliable every time. Just received these Crimpers, I made my first cable with them and they are working perfectly. I borrowed a pair of Ideal Crimpers from a friend and I feel like these do a slightly better job. The connection felt a little more secure . I was making Cat 6 cabling with QVS brand Cat 6 Jacks, these jacks do not have the back crimp that usually holds the wire into the jack ( I know cheap jacks LOL) with that being said while the crimpers did dimple the end it had no ill effect on the crimp or the jack at all. I tested the wire by plugging it in to the Router and the computer and it is what is providing the internet access to the computer i am writing this review on. The crimpers do have a little nob for release but you do not have to use it, simply press down a little harder and the crimpers will spring open. The cutter is located on the back side of the Crimps, one side says Strip and the other says cut. The cutters are comparable to any other cutter on crimps. The stripper portion works but you will need to be very careful not to cut through the cables located behind the outside jacket. With that being said I have made many wires with other crimpers and none of them have stripped the wire well, I do not rely on any all in one crimps to cut and strip wire, I use a pair of small side cuts to cut the wire and the jacket. These crimpers do the job and feel extremely well made, i love the size and how they lock down when not is use. I whole heartily recommend these crimpers they will get the job done and feel great in my hand.

EDIT: Well turns out that all you have to do to release the crimp from the closed position is squeeze it all the way down. It wasn't very obvious to me. That feature makes it much better. I suppose you could call the dial I refer to below as the "emergency release". They are pretty good now that a fellow poster Tom pointed out the feature. I wish I had known this earlier. Over all they are very good. I've kept my original review below just for reference and for kicks. ORIGINAL: I bought these because I was sold on the wire diagrams printed on the tool along with the compact size. Those two aspects are really nice, and it crimps well! HOWEVER The unlocking feature ( the thing that unlocks the crimps from their closed position) is a horrid, awful, tiny, overly stiff, metal cylinder which you must rotate. Not only just rotate, but rotate with the force of super human hand strength. It would be ok if you could get some leverage, but the tiny thumbellina sized knob laughs at any attempt you make to rotate its fun sized grip indentations on the metal. You end up crushing the bones in your fingers just trying to get a grip on it. Definitely not something I appreciate when I'm sweating my butt off, up on a wobbly ladder, cables wrapped around me. I just want something that works without having to use two hands and all of my strength focused into the tiny surface of less than a ball point pen. It really just ruins everything for these crimpers. Is it just me? Everyone else seems to have no qualms in their reviews with this. Is there something I'm not seeing? It seriously sucks the life out of me every time I want to use them.

Purchased this to crimp Cat6 cables for my camera system. Perfect for that occasional crimp you need to avoid replacing the cable. Works very well. Update: This tool is not a pass through crimper. I made the mistake in thinking it was. So I returned it for the Klein VDV226-110. Both tools work very well, it's just my preference to have the pass through to help terminate the ends.

I've used this tool before so I was excited to receive it. The issue I had with it was my own fault for not knowing this specific tool doesn't come with the blades for cutting the excess length for pass-thru connectors. Figure somebody else might want to know this like I did. As a fairly new technician, I now know how to terminate non pass through rj45 connectors. TLDR: Great product, but it doesn't have blades for pass-thru rj45 connectors.

First time user, everything went well, tool is simple and reliable

The printed instructions are printed too small. But by reading the instructions and the figures on the crimper and experimenting it worked pretty good. It does all that it is supposed to do. I had round internet type cable so I had to improvise a little. I stripped the outside insulation back about 2 inches then untwisted each pair and took each wire by its color and installed it into the connector until full, then crimped the connector after making sure the outside cover was inside the connector, then installed the new assembly into the crimper and closed the handle a couple of times and then trimmed the excess leads with a flush cutting dykes. Plugged it into the router and it was ready to go. This is a good quality tool. I am glad I spent this kind of money to get this tool. It should be reasonable for most technically minded people to use. Klein makes good tools.

I bought my VDV226-107 two years ago with the intention of replacing my traditional "pliers-style" crimpers that I had used for years and then lost in a work-van blackhole. When these arrived, they appeared to be up to the task and I was excited to give them a try. The fit and finish is great. No rough edges, solid hand-feel, and even though they have bounced around in my tool-belt for their two-years none of the lettering or decals have peeled off or begun to fade. The textured handle is also as solid as it was when I first bought it. I have probably terminated around 500 or so cables with it by now and it's still just as tight as it was on crimp one. If you're looking for a good value tool for the money, I wouldn't hesitate to say this one would hold up durability-wise. However, this is about where I run out of praises for the tool and will drop into the criticisms I had. 1: I'm really not a fan of the design even though I really wanted to be. I had assumed that you would hold the die-side in the palm of your hand and squeeze the yellow handle with your fingers to terminate the cables. Unfortunately, the opposite is true. When using this tool with your right hand, I found this process slightly awkward feeling and I never really got used to it. It's about like riding a bike or a motorcycle and having the clutch/brake levers on the riders side of the handle bars. You can still operate them, but it always felt awkward and felt like it only impeded gripping strength. Left handed operation was better, but I found that the yellow grip on the handle provided inadequate grip and wanted to slip out of my hand if my grip wasn't just right. Inverted(with the Die end of the tool near my wrist), the Tool felt better (better application of gripping force) in my right hand, but worse in my left hand (Back to square one with having to work the tool in a sub-optimal fashion while also having the tool constantly trying to slip out of your hand). In either case, I would recommend some grip tape added to the handle and the rear of the tool. Or at least, some sandpaper and double-sided tape. I found that the extra texture helped the slippery nature of the tool, even though it didn't do much to combat the rest of awkwardness. Its almost like my hands weren't big enough to properly hold the tool like I wanted to. (I should also point out I have larger hands. 98mm from index knuckle to pinky knuckle and 200mm from tip of the middle finger to wrist) 2: This is the first crimper I've ever used that actually made my terminations less reliable. I've never had issues with RJ-45 crimping whether it was a cheap 12$ crimper from the local hardware store, or a higher quality crimping tool. However, this tool constantly worked to break my RJ-45 ends. It never wanted to fully seat the cables in the die so if you weren't paying attention, you would crimp the cable and it would smash the rear of the connector (near the strain-lock) and not lock the strain-lock. Even when fully inserted, it constantly feels like it is out of alignment and I often have to re-tip a cable I just made because it thoroughly destroyed the rear of the RJ-45 end. I have tried cleaning the die out, different ends (I primarily use GMP Brand RJ-45 ends), and even just being more careful; telling myself that "One day thing's 'll get better and I'll get used to it." It is 100% possible that both my issues are user error, but I do not have this problem with other crimpers and find myself often using a shared set or someone else's crimper just because I don't trust this one at all. Only two marks against, but to me they were two critical marks that have led me to never want to try one of these "ergonomic" style crimpers ever again. They may work for you, but they certainty didn't for me.

Nice compact crimper, has the standards on the tool as 2ell for those that can't remember them.
