It's a digital polysynth with analog filters.

Is this Microfreak the newest version 3.0?

The Hardware is the latest. There have been no changes in the physical synth. When you get your MicroFreak simply go to their website and check for firmware updates. Since purchasing my MicroFreak I have received two very nice updates. Just register your microFreak when you get it and check online. There are also lots of patches to download if you wish.

Can you connect an external 61 key keyboard to this synth?

The microfreak has MIDI in and out, so if your keyboard has MIDI as well, you should be good.
