Music Theory for Computer Musicians: Book & CD-ROM

This is a great book. I actually just bought it because it was suggested along with a textbook I was purchasing for school, and I thought it sounded interesting, so I decided to give it a shot. Turns out is was a worthwhile gamble! Hewitt takes a very interesting (and down-to-earth) approach to theory in this book. The premise seems to be that with the influx of computer musicians, not only is it easy to skate by without theory knowledge, it's also possible these days to not even be related to music in the form of sheet music and the printed staff. He therefore gives many of the examples throughout the book both in the form of notated music, but also in relation to the piano roll view that is common in so many music software programs (he uses Reason for examples in the book). For me, this was invaluable, since, for whatever reason, I had never done much to connect the two realms in my head. For me, I was always either reading and writing sheet music, or I was programming music (which I usually did by ear and not by considering the theory of it) and the two worlds existed independently of one another. This book caused me to work with them side by side, which bridged the gap and strengthened my ability in both areas in the process. It's a quick read if you're willing to work a bit (there are workbook style activities at the end of every chapter). There are indeed some typos and some strange mistakes in the answer key for the activities (which exists as a somewhat difficult-to-find pdf appendix downloadable from the publisher's website) to the extent that you might think you were crazy or didn't "get this theory thing after all" if you believed every answer in the answer key (there are only a handful of these types of mistakes, but they are confounding when you first encounter them). But those small grievances aside, this book has some really great content and is worth the trouble.

Holy crap this is unreal! I needed help with music theory, not being educated otherwise, and Im a computer composer so I figured this might at least help. I'm only on chapter 7 and I have learned way WAY more than I thought I would. The information is clearly presented and concise which is very appreciated cause I don't really like wordy explanations that just seem to be wordy to make the information seem more complex than it actually is, or make the author seem smarter than the reader... I know you're smarter than I am, thats why Im reading your book!! Then there are quizzes at the end of each chapter that really help drive key points home. When you get online to log into the answer keys you have to be careful though because I think on like 2 occasions so far one of the answers provided in the key was incorrect, but I think that has to do with the fact that the Answer keys are on a massive website that have lost of answer keys and maybe it got lost in translation, or its a new edition... whatever... Its no matter, it takes nothing away from the integrity of the information contained within or how it is being presented. SO in conclusion the book is incredible. From a dude that knew nothing about music theory I can say that this book is actively elevating my understanding of the musical language and how to implement it into my work. Many thanks to Michael Hewitt and the people that put this book together.

I bought this book after reading the reviews saying it was basic and only good for beginners, etc! Well as someone who is not a complete beginner on music theory, having taking lessons and playing keyboard for years, this book is still very useful in reviewing topics that you may already know but need a refresher on. The fact that it does cover this using some examples of using a music Digital Audio Workstation (DAW for short) software's Piano Roll interface, there are examples from versions of various software and this book is NOT software specific, to me is a plus. No not every example is laid out in Piano Roll format like one reviewer suggested, and the writer does use most of the examples with traditional treble $ bass clef music notation. But if you are a complete beginner he does do a great job explaining how the piano roll layout in software translates to traditional treble & bass staff notation, and it even includes a introduction section on sound and synthesis. Why 4 stars instead of five? For me this book is a solid basic music theory book, and has some very good examples and review exercises, so far I really like the sections on the cycle of fifths, the chapter on the different modes of music (different types of scales), and the section on the pentatonic scale (which is essential reading), however I was a little disappointed on the chapter on appregiation (splitting notes of chords in music melodies) and while it is good, hoped it would come with more examples since this is used extensively in most of today's dance music. Also a good basic section on drums, drum roll notation would have been nice, even though I know that's not covered in most music theory books, but this is a book for computer musicians and most using any DAW sequencer will have drums, opposed to someone who is just learning how to play the piano/keyboard or a guitar. It also does have guitar tab notation which is a plus, and there is a good section on rhythm, tempo, and note length. For me personally I think this book is a great introduction to music theory, a generally good reference, and the fact that it comes with an Audio CD of examples is a big plus. I wouldn't recommend it for someone who is looking for advanced examples, chord progressions, or techniques that are used in specific modern pop songs or songs of specific genre say R&B or Club Music, and I think this book would go well with others that cover some of its chapters in more detail. Some I think might be a good supplement to this book are: 1) Basic Chord Progressions (Alfred Handy Guide) , 2) Chord Progressions For Songwriters , 3) The Complete Book of Scales, Chords, Arpeggios and Cadences: Includes All the Major, Minor (Natural, Harmonic, Melodic) & Chromatic Scales - Plus Additional 4) Keyboard Chords & Scales Book (Fasttrack Series) Instructions on Music Fundamentals]] , and for keyboard specific players 5) The Piano Handbook: A Complete Guide for Mastering Piano and for drums 6) Drum Programming: A Complete Guide to Program and Think Like a Drummer for R&B and Hip Hop specific (which also translates to many dance styles) 7) RandB Soul Keyboards: The Complete Guide (Musicians Institute Press)

I've been composing music using a DAW of some sort for the better of seven years. I've been making music for ten years. My instrumentation skills and production/engineering skills are completely self-taught. Sound like you? BUY THIS BOOK! This book is phenomenal. I highly recommend it. It demystifies music theory, and now I look at music that I make and listen to in an entirely different way. Because I'm vigorously self-taught, the first seven or so chapters were just refreshers. The same kind of stuff you'd find in tutorials and music production magazines occupy the first half of the book. The pace starts at such a slow understandable rate that I would recommend Music Theory for Computer Musicians to someone that has only been using a DAW for a month, and that is all they know about music, period. For the rest of us, about halfway through is when the complexities start stacking, but as long as you've been paying attention, you can take it all in and digest it all. For anyone that doesn't really understand music, they just get by with what feels right (such as myself), this book certainly helps you look at everything that has sounded good musically and figure it all out. I am so glad I read this. The exams at the end of each chapter also are extremely helpful for gauging what you already know and what you are learning. Now I can talk theory, see theory and most importantly hear theory.

OK, so the title of this review might be a little misleading. This book is probably best for DJs wanting to make the switch to production, and have no clue how to get out all the awesome ideas they have in their heads. Make no mistake though, this is ACTUAL music theory, buy this book if you are going to take the time to grasp it's subject matter. If you have the patience to read , reread, and practice its exercises, this can take you from making unintelligible garbage to actually conveying a great musical expression. Also it really helps if you actually have an inert knack for music. As a DJ Ive always been obsessed with the idea of writing and producing my own tracks. after slaving for days to make only sophomoric expression, I realized there was something I just wasnt getting when it came to expressing a musical idea. This is where this book was a massive help. Oh, and for all the hater rants on this review board, seriously, this book is for people without a musical background trying to break into a new field, not a masters degree in musical understanding. My advice: for 20 bucks this is hands down the best tool I've come across for making professional sounding tracks. Cheers Moon Dog

I've been teaching myself music theory on and off for two decades. Needless to say - I've read a few books on the matter. This book gives you just the right amount of knowledge w/o getting lost in the weeds. I've been choosing a chapter to compose from, like a hands-on study tool and my songwriting has improved dramatically. I'm using compositional techniques that I honestly never thought I'd get to - level wise. (That probably sounds like a lame infomercial pitch, but this is an honest review. I bought this with my own funds) I've tried to figure out if it was all the previous books - and this book just made it all click, or what. The bottom line - this is the book that, for me - made everything click. Highly suggest it for anyone who wants to improve their craft of songwriting.

Arrived promptly on schedule, as usual. I've had an interest in music theory for a long time, and have looked at a few "theory" books before. But this is the first such book that has provided a comprehensive overview of the whole of music theory, which was what I really wanted. The basic structure of music theory was laid out in a friendly manner. I didn't study too intently, though, since I was looking for "the big picture". I didn't open the included CD, either. I'm sure that was why I got a little lost about half way through, so, for instance, I'm hazy on the precise difference between "scales" and "modes". I'm confident the material is there, I just have to make a proper study of it when I want to clarify my understanding. Even if I have to seek out a different resource for the most certain knowledge of a particular aspect of theory, this will still be my go-to book, my road map. I hope, someday, the Kindle versions of books can include CD/DVD material.

It is an OK book, nothing that is terribly wrong with it. The writer just isn't the most interesting and that makes it a bit dry. It tends to be aimed at the beginner for the most part. It does have some slightly more advance stuff it in, but it is just terribly dry. It didn't hold my interest at all. Its kind of like the computer musician is a bit less able than his instrument playing counterpart, but in actuality the computer is quite a versatile instrument, even a versatile series of instruments. It could very well just be me. I have had 10 + years of formal music lessons and don't have the longest attention span. It just wasn't for me. Some people might find it to be great for them. It isn't a bad book by any means, just not the book I needed. I found Rick Snoman's Dance Music Manual much more informative. Although it's theory section is rather short it is packed with goof info. It also has a lot of very good real world applicable information in it. It is dated a couple of years, but that's how dance music is. It has so much timeless information in it that I would recommend it to beginner or seasoned musician alike, computer/beat based/rhythm based musicians. Hope this helps someone.

with music theory i think it's best (well like any kind of knowledge) - to approach it from different angles. this book is well written. it's simple to read, and the best thing is that it has exercises to test your knowledge. it comes with accompanying mp3s where the author shows examples of what he is talking about. i havent finished it yet - around 70% done, but its quite good. ive played guitar for 20 years, but with 0 theory until the last couple years. the book (in addition to watching youtube videos) has filled in some gaps for me, but also gives a bit of a rudimentary concepts for music theory. i think its quite useful. DO THE EXERCISES! i havent done them for all chapters and you will lose a little by not doing them.

CD is missing any download option?

Livro muito bom !

I've played guitar in bands for 20 years, entirely self taught. I've also have been producing electronic music with Cubase (and other DAWs - Reason/Ableton etc) for well over 10 years. I haven't been able to read music since my very short stint learning trumpet as a 9 year old! Because of the above I have at least a bit of grounding in music theory, albeit sub-consciously, as well as experience of the alternative to music notation that is used by music software (ie. midi, piano roll, grids etc). Most other music theory books are likely to rely on the reader's ability to read music, making the subject inpenetrable to self-taught musicians. So, for someone at a similar level to me (I'm sure a couple of years of music experience as opposed to 20 will be enough), this book is fantastic and I couldn't recommend it enough. I have learnt loads and loads, and understand a hell of a lot more, in just two weeks. It's very well written, clear, concise and holds your hand throughout. It's very well broken down into the different subjects, so once you've read it all (and most likely been overwhelmed - which can't be helped seeing as it's a big subject), you can go back and re-read the sections you are unclear on. I can vouch that re-reading chapters has really worked for me. I am completely unacademic, so if I can get it, then you can too! My only small gripe is that there is at least one mistake in the exercises at the end of each chapter (I think!), but it's not going to affect my 5/5 rating as it's improved my understanding of music immeasurably. One last thing in reference to a couple of the lower-rated reviews. This book is not about synthesis and doesn't purport to be. You won't learn about oscillators or using DAWs etc. There are plenty of other books that do that. This is very a particular book that aims to improve the self-taught electronic musician's knowledge of music theory in order to improve their songwriting abilities (whether it's melody, harmony, chords, beats, rhythm, arpeggiation etc). I think it does that well. I found it logically structured, and yes, while it may give you some information that you find irrelevant to your needs, I'm sure there are other musicians that will find this information useful.

Harmony for Computer Musicians"、"Composition for Computer Musicians" をこの本の後に読むことをお勧めします。 本文で "Listen to Track xx on the CD." Mark at your own discretion."
