This 'Mic' works well with my Standard Horizon HXD850.I tested it with the HX851 as well.Two 'items of interest' --1) to connect the mic to the VHF,-- remove the protective cover-- insert the 'fitting'-- and then screw it in.To a mechanical 'klutz' like myself, this is not IIOTTMCO.[Intuitively Obvious To The Most Casual Observer]2) I was disappointed by the low-volume of the mic.On the latter point, it is important to note that a handheld VHF is inherently less powerful than the one installed on the boat.Many boats have a mic-jack in the cockpit to connect something similar to this mic to the boat's VHF.Most of the time, that mic-jack connection does NOT work with this 'mic'.So:-- Figure this 'Mic' will not work with the system on the boat-- Figure it will work with your handheld, but recognize that implies reduced VHF range.The 'Mic' has nothing to do with the reduced VHF range inherent in your handheld.Oh, would I buy this again?Would I recommend it to my friends?Yes on both counts.

Bought this for my son who works on the Mississippi River as a Tow Boat operator. Believe me... it gets abused but keeps on ticking. It is rugged and sturdy.

I bought one of these to go with my SH handheld radio. It works great but you have to be careful about two things. First, transmit audio volume will be very low if you're not careful to hold the mic right up to your lips and speak loudly directly into it, which is fine if you're holding the mic in your hand. However, if you have the mic clipped to your lapel or shoulder (which I do because I need my hands to be free), you have to turn your head and speak down into the mic (or unclip the mic and hold it), which is very hard to do in active conditions, plus it's a royal pain. Second, while the mic has "submersible" printed all over it, you have to be careful about that because while you can get the mic all wet without permanently killing it, getting it wet means the speaker stops working (the mic continues to work, so you can transmit but not receive). And by "wet" I don't mean that you have to immerse it in water, I mean that rain and spray can get it wet enough to make it stop working. I know it wasn't the radio because when I took the mic off the radio worked just fine. Once the mic dries off it'll start to work again (so I suppose technically it's submersible since immersing it won't break it permanently), but if you're outside and it starts raining you might as well take the mic off and use the radio by itself. There is the chance that the problem is due to water getting into the connector and breaking the connection to the speaker, but mine was installed securely so the problem would still be an issue with the waterproofness of this unit.
