If a Red Chinese Company is managed to the point where it is producing quality goods it will be good. I have a Kershaw knife that is made in PRC. It is deadly sharp.

Will this protect me against bears?

Probably not cause you would have to get way to close for comfort to use it.

what are the approx dimensions of the head.

Approx. head dimensiions = 6.5" by 7.5"

Can it collapse, or is there a sheathe?

It does not collapse or fold like an entrenching tool. It is one solid piece. It has a very sturdy sheath that holds it very well. The sheath holds this tool very firmly so, while it will not fall out or move around, do not expect a quick draw if you are thinking of this as a defensive device. It is a great all around tool that takes and holds an edge extremely well. Maybe too well. I keep mine almost razor sharp and I have to be VERY careful not to touch any of the sharpened edges. A simple touch results in an open gash. The M48 does not have to be this sharp though. It is just my preference to make and keep it that way.
