Another home-run from Yamaha. Accurate and totally devoid of noise. A dream come true.
This is pro-level equipmant, my friends. It has it all - accuracy, noise free, frequency response, connectivity, and all the controls you need to dial it in to match your monitors. I've been at this for 15 years. Yamaha knows sound. Everything I've ever purchased from them, which is considerable, is well thought out by actual engineers and beautifully executed. This sub is no exception. For it's level of quality it is not expensive at all, but if you're an enthusiastic amateur like myself you'll feel a little pinch to the pocketbook. When it comes to Yamaha, you truly get what you pay for. You'll love this thing for many, many years.

Fantastic Subwoofer, and yes it really makes a difference!
Best subwoofer I've ever used. If you're wondering whether (i) a subwoofer matters to your home studio, or (ii) whether this particular subwoofer will make a HUGE difference to your home studio, the answer is YES!!!!! Great power, nice tight sound, no unnatural booms, exceptionally solid construction, excellent crossover and retains imaging and detail beautifully Not only does it give you incredible bass performance, keeping the low end out of your near field monitors (using the low cut control) allows them to perform much better in the frequency range where they perform best. I've tried it in a large studio and in a small project studio I use for mixing and mastering and it sounds incredible in both. I've paired it with Genelecs, mackies and a pair of B&W monitors (don't laugh, they sound great and have a very natural flat frequency response) and it was everything I could have ever hoped for. I upgraded from another brand that had a larger front-facing driver because I needed a slightly smaller form factor for the project studio, and was skeptical as to whether it was powerful enough paired with a 200/side watt BGW reference amp or whether I was wasting a bit of money because I could have gotten a lot of subs that cost less, and there is absolutely no question that it was worth every penny. I have to keep it down at about 4 even with the BGW clocked at 10. If you can afford it, buy it. If not, save up for it. One last lesson learned: I used a very direct signal path this time going direct from my universal audio interface into the HS8 and am extremely pleased by how much clearer the sound is and how much detail is retained as opposed to running it into a Mackie Big Knob first (as much as I like the Big Knob, the fewer things you put in your signal path the better).

Sounds so clear and distinct that I can now hear “the room” verses the sound from the speakers.
Update: This subwoofer is awesome for listening to my Keytar in the studio. Keytar: https://amzn.to/3UPBHpR It really brings out all the sounds this incredible instrument can make. Being part guitar, part keyboard and part synthesizer it can produce an amazing range of sounds from guitar to bass to horns to keys to full blown FX The subwoofer really brings out the lows! Much more so than the Yamaha HS8 studio monitors alone. A great addition to the studio. First review: After returning three other 10” studio monitor subs that were defective. I decided to WAY up my game a go with this 8” Yamaha. I bought the HS8S with Amazon as the seller and “ships from” No issues at all with the sub. Clearly a high quality speaker. I ordered a pair of Yamaha HS8i 8” studio monitors and only one arrived. I connected the XLR cables to the one HS8i and left my earlier purchased 8” (other brand) studio monitor speaker connected. The HS8S and HS8i were so sonically clear I could suddenly hear the acoustics of the room distinctly! I could even hear the HS8i breaking in. It was astounding. I had not heard that before these speakers. The other HS8i is on the way but yet to be delivered. Technical things to consider: the heat sink in the back sticks out far enough you cannot use “angle” XLR connectors unless they are the kind that can go 4 direction. Same with the HS8i. Not saying anything against the speaker or heat sink, just something to note if you are placing the speaker in a tight space. The manual is excellent and worth reading the details that matter to you. Like balanced vs unbalanced cables. The build quality is “QUALITY”. Let the speakers break in a bit before deciding about them… Very impressive and would recommend. I might start doing hearing exercises to keep up!

Can't go without!
I had a couple reasons for buying this subwoofer. I love listening to house music and I was missing out on a lot of the low end, I've gotten into audio mixing recently and having a subwoofer helps to hear everything, and I already had the Yamaha HS5's and this paired perfectly with them. For casual listening, this simply sounds amazing. I primarily listen to house and rock music and it adds a layer to the music you can't get otherwise. If you are someone who appreciates music, this will make you appreciate it even more. When it comes to mixing, I have been able to hear low rumble and background noise I haven't heard before and have been able to get rid of it. Definitely worth it in that department. Lastly, I already owned the Yamaha HS5 speakers and this subwoofer is in the same series of studio monitors so they work flawlessly. The only category that got 4 stars was the value because it depends on your needs/wants. I would personally give it 5 stars for value but to someone not musically inclined, they might see it as 4 stars. Overall, I highly recommend this subwoofer, just be sure to not wake up your neighbors ;)

Wow what a difference
This unit has REALLY changed the way I produce and mix. What a difference. I was using a pair of HS5's and a pair of Event 20/20s before adding this unit. While the 20/20s do a good job with the low end, they aren't ideal for smaller rooms and don't offer near the performance you can get from a standalone sub-woofer. I no longer struggle to wrap my head around what's happening on the low-end. No more constant bouncing down of mixes to test on the car stereo with 2 12's in the trunk. Love the way this unit works together with the HS5s. Set the crossover at 120hz and enjoy. Ideal placement is centered between your monitors, but because low frequencies are omni-directional you can place just about anywhere in the room. I have mine set off to right of center by about 2 feet and it does not at all affect my perception of the stereo field. Highly recommend adding a subwoofer to your studio setup. You absolutely won't regret it.

So Far So Good
This subwoofer arrived quickly and packed well for the shipping to Hawaii. This subwoofer kicks butt and is surprisingly powerful. I use it as part of my computer systems audio monitoring system and wasn't expecting the amount of punch I got from it when I first fired it up. I could feel the air pressure coming out of the subwoofer and it was as clear and penetrating beyond my expectations.

Fantastic
Must have sub for any studio. Durable, a little expensive but within the range for it's size and frequency response. The connectivity is perfect. Routes audio out from the sub for perfect blending. 5/5

The Ultimate Combo
The Yamaha HS8S has been an outstanding addition to my studio setup. Paired with my Yamaha HS8 monitors, it creates a balanced, full-range system that delivers accurate and enjoyable sound across every genre. The build quality is excellent. The cabinet feels solid and well-engineered, with a premium finish that inspires confidence. Every control is thoughtfully laid out, and the overall construction reflects Yamaha's reputation for reliability and durability. Sound quality is where the HS8S truly shines. The bass is deep, tight, and controlled rather than exaggerated, extending the low end naturally without overwhelming the mix. It adds weight and authority while preserving clarity, making it equally suitable for music production, mixing, and critical listening. Even at higher listening levels, the subwoofer remains composed and distortion-free. The synergy with the Yamaha HS8 monitors is exceptional. They blend seamlessly, producing a cohesive and accurate soundstage with smooth transitions from the monitors to the subwoofer. Once properly calibrated, the system sounds like a single, unified full-range monitor, revealing details and low-frequency information that the HS8s alone cannot fully reproduce. Overall, the Yamaha HS8S is a worthwhile investment for anyone using Yamaha HS8 monitors. Its superb build quality, accurate bass reproduction, and perfect integration with the HS8 make it an excellent choice for anyone seeking a professional monitoring system that is both revealing and enjoyable to listen to.

Didn't know I needed this.
For years and years I rocked my HS8 without a sub, thinking the extra 20hz below that 43hz of the HS8 wouldn't make such a difference. Or thinking it would be complicated to calibrate. Oh boy was I super wrong. This is the easiest speaker calibration setup I ever had to do. Just follow the manual, then set each volume knob to 12 o'clock, lowcut at around 100hz and job done. That extra below 43hz also truly make a difference. When you add up that our HS# can now focus only on the mid and the highs, leaving the lows to the sub, oh boy oh boy, damn the whole set just so even better. So much that even tho our HS# already sounded and worked good for over a decade, you'll still be surprised at how good they can truly shine. You'll wonder why did you ever used them without their sub to begin with. If you thought they packed a punch, be ready to be surprised at how punchy they are now. Flatter response, tight bass, warm mids and crispy highs.
