The New York Times bestselling, Eisner Award winning THE WALKING DEAD series takes readers on the harrowing journey of Rick Grimes returns with its FOURTH massive paperback collection! With over 1,000 pages, this volume contains the final chapter in Robert Kirkman ( Super Dinosaur, Oblivion Song, Invincible ) and Charlie Adlard's Eisner Award-winning story of survival horror upon which the hit AMC television series is based. From the Whisperers to the Commonwealth, Rick Grimes meets new allies and enemies to the way to reclaiming the world from the dead. Wars are started, and dear friends fall... Collects THE WALKING DEAD #145-193. Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - This compendium collects issues 145-193, concluding with the final events of The Walking Dead. A lot happens across these story arcs, building to a grand finale. I especially enjoyed several volumes in this collection and found them to be some of the best in the entire series. My review below is organized by volume/story arc and contains spoilers as it progresses. Art: 4.5/5 Plot: 5/5 Writing: 5/5 My Enjoyment: 5/5 Vol. 25: No Turning Back After the brutal attack from the Whisperers, everyone is looking to Rick for leadership and retaliation, but he isn’t reacting the way they expect. Tensions in the camps are rising, and people begin lashing out, ultimately leading Lydia and Carl away from Alexandria. Rick even takes counsel from an unexpected ally. This is a high-stakes but low(er)-action arc, clearly leading up to something big. I liked how this volume poses moral questions about what should be done, showing multiple sides of the argument through a variety of characters. Rick is going to have to make some tough calls, and whether leadership is worth it feels like a central theme, not just for Rick, but for the other leaders as well. Vol. 26: Call To Arms Rick is preparing everyone for an attack on the Whisperers while also covering the town in propaganda, redirecting attention away from himself and onto their enemy. Meanwhile, Dwight proves himself to be a capable military leader, getting people battle-ready. In a twist of events, their prisoner escapes and makes some very interesting, and unexpected, choices. I really enjoyed this volume. It has more of the classic zombie action and features some surprising decisions from one of the most chaotic characters in the series. This is becoming one of my favorite story arcs. Vol. 27: The Whisperer War Everyone is in battle mode as Rick’s war with the Whisperers escalates, and they prove to be a formidable enemy. Negan is out and fighting against the Whisperers, and he and Beta go head to head. There’s also tension surrounding the Kingdom’s new leadership. Meanwhile, Carl and Lydia’s differing worldviews begin to strain their budding relationship. This volume is nonstop action, with a few brief glimpses into what’s happening with individual characters. I found it extremely intense and even a little hard to follow at times as it shifts between different viewpoints. Overall, though, it’s an exciting read, and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Vol. 28: A Certain Doom Rick and the others have defended themselves against the Whisperers, but now the massive horde is on top of them. Hilltop has been destroyed, and Alexandria is surrounded. Andrea, Michonne, and a few others head out on horseback to try to lure the herd away, with devastating consequences. Meanwhile, some opportunistic enemies take advantage of the chaos and make their move. This was a nonstop zombie-filled issue, and one of my favorite characters died, which had me in tears, not just because of how it happened, but because of how it was dragged out. I’m not sure where the story is going from here, with enemies becoming heroes and people dropping left and right. Vol. 29: Lines We Cross Rick and Carl, along with many others, are grieving after the substantial loss. They regroup and begin rebuilding. A small group sets out to meet Eugene’s radio contact and picks up a chaotic new companion along the way. Maggie is distraught over Negan’s release from captivity, and he is having trouble adjusting as well. I enjoyed this installment a lot. It wrapped up some loose ends and seems to be setting up events for the impending conclusion. It caught me off guard a couple of times, as events didn’t go the way I expected, so it can apparently still surprise me. I’m looking forward to what’s coming next, although I feel like it’s going to get darker before it’s all over. Vol. 30: New World Order Michonne, Eugene, and their crew finally meet the group connected to the radio lady, Stephanie. The community is massive and well-organized, but it definitely gives off a too-good-to-be-true vibe. One major red flag is their class system. Their leader is especially eager to meet Rick and that goes about as well as you’d expect. I really enjoyed this volume. It’s more of a slow burn, with less zombie action and more world-building, clearly building toward something big. I ugly-cried at one point, but for once, they were happy tears. Vol. 31: The Rotten Core Rick is trying to create an amicable relationship with the Commonwealth and their governor, Pamela. He escorts her around their communities and attempts to sway her mind about her rigid class system. Tensions escalate when he visits their territory, as the lower-class citizens are rioting and growing tired of the military presence. Michonne gets caught in the crossfire as she has to determine whose side she’s really on, with dire consequences. I really enjoyed this installment. There was a little bit of everything, from zombie action to political intrigue. This story arc has some similarities to how things started in Alexandria, with the “things aren’t as they seem” theme, but on a much bigger scale. I really like a few of the newer characters that have been introduced. Vol. 32: Rest In Peace Tensions are extremely high in the Commonwealth, as the community is divided over their feelings about leadership. Rick is doing his best to keep the peace, but he’s pulled in many directions as events force his hand, leading to all forces converging at once with dire consequences. The story makes its final jump, wrapping up the series and showing what the world looks like years down the road. I was really happy with how this series ended. I was in tears, not just at the climax, but also during some of the monologues and actions of many of the characters. It’s hard to say too much without spoiling it, and if you made it this far without finding out what happens, good for you, I accidentally looked up spoilers early on. But I think Kirkman was very thoughtful and intentional with his choices, and I liked that the story didn’t just end with “what happens after zombies,” which was the original motivation, but what comes after that. How does humanity go on, or does it? Review: Good comprendium. - One of the best comics of all time. Negan is the GOAT. The whisperers storyline was awesome. I miss this series. Also, the comic was good quality and has held up through multiple readings.

10/10
Having watched the show before reading the comics, I can now say that this is much better than the show. Don’t get me wrong, the show is amazing; however, there are big points where the plot diverges on the show which I think the comic does a better job at developing.

Worth every penny
I didn't start reading the comics until earlier this year and given the fact that there are so many issues and I just didn't know if I was ever going to be able to find them all individually, I decided to get the compendiums. I am halfway through this one and I must say I am loving every minute of it. Printed on quality paper, this comic never fails to deliver. I'd even go so far as to say I prefer the comics over the TV show, but that's just my opinion and there's no accounting for taste. Anyway, I can't recommend these compendiums enough. A must for all TWD fans.
