ENGEL MR040 40 Quart Portable Top Opening 12/24V DC - 110/120V AC Fridge-Freezer

I did a lot of online research on these refrigerator/freezers. I choose the Engel due to reliability. Basically the decision came down to the Engel and ARB. I like the idea of the single moving part Engel swing compressor. Engel wins! Out of box unpack audit was a little disappointing. The unit seems to be packaged well however there are no cursory unboxing directions. If you open it from the top and try to dig your hands in and grab the cooler there is nothing to grab onto because you have to attach the handles. There are tight fitting recesses for each corner in the bottom of the box. Pulling the cooler up, the recessed cutouts grab the rubber isolator feet and pulls them off the cooler. Pulls them right over the screws and washers holding them on. So now you gotta figure how to screw them back on without flipping over the cooler. Once I got the rubber isolation legs back on, I noticed the lid was loose. The hinges and latches were loose, not screwed in all the way, so I tightened them up. Not a good first impression. I set the unit up and immediately plugged it in to AC current to test it out. I put a few room temp items in along with a wireless room thermometer. It quickly (35 minutes) went from 85° ambient to 37° for refrigeration mode. I left it there for several hours then turned the freezer setting on. It went to zero within an hour. It froze some water containers quickly. I purchased a 12 volt 55ah deep cycle AGM battery as a spare power source and backup to the AC and my vehicle battery. Both AC and DC can be plugged in at the same time. The unit defaults to AC power. So if AC power fails it will switch automatically to DC, then back to AC when restored so you loose no cooling. I tested the unit just on the AGM battery. From full charge, 12.7 volts, I ran it for 48 hours with a decent load of items in it at refrigeration temperature 37°. Ambient temp was roughly 80° during the day and 60° at night. I opened and closed the unit ten times per 24 hour period during this time to simulate real world usage. At the end of the 48 hours the battery voltage was at 12.2 volts. So in 48 hours it ran down the battery .5 volts. Not bad. I then put the unit in the back seat of my truck for one week on refrigeration mode 37°. It held temperature fine even though at times it was in the sun. When parked I made sure to keep it away from the sun, however it was in a black truck and it was 85° outside. The truck battery was always at over 12.4 volts in the morning with the Engel and a bunch of other electronics responsible for the drain from 12.7 volts full charge. My usage for this is refrigerator is primarily camping in Baja, many times in remote areas with rough roads, sporadic AC power (if any) and warm days. My testing so far has worked out favorably. The main concerns were reliability and low power consumption. I think the Engel satisfies those concerns.

I just purchased a 2nd one to use in conjunction with a 100 w solar panel and battery set up for home use. Works unbelievably! 2 setting is about as high as I have needed and keeps cold to 37°F. I do primitive camping with it on solar and in my vehicle and 3 days in my vehicle with no huge battery drain. I live in AZ and got tired of lugging ice and all the maintenance that goes with igloo type coolers. Yes it does weigh quite a bit but to me it's worth the extra weight. I also feel better that if the electricity goes out for an extended period, it can be used with my solar set up to maintain critical refrigerated meds.

We used a very old model for years but returned it to the owner so we could get a new one. The old one got us through Hurricane Ian and used very little power. Used the generator off and on and the Engle kept everything cold. Accidentally moved the temperature setting and it almost froze the food. Excellent product.

We have this MR40 in our travel van and love it! Durable and quiet (it’s under the bed). It sips power, even in hot Southern summers. It saved us after a hurricane when power was out at the house. We simply transferred food to the Engel, and went about our food lives as always. We bought this during Covid times, when supply was short. It was the only one we could find. I’m glad we found it. It’s been great!

I've been running my MR040 continuously since March 2015, half the year in my 4x4 and half in the house, and it's been flawless. I rarely want things frozen inside, though it's seemingly effortless for it to do so, and so I run the control between 1 and 2 (out of 5). My biggest problem if you could call it one is that I too easily freeze things, even on a 90+ degree beach. I would like it to have electronic controls but I see where Engel prizes durability and longevity over all else - and that's ultimately why I bought an Engel. I know folks who have them from the 70's having never broken down. Nice. UPDATE: Hi folks! Three years later and the fridge is dead...... just kidding. Its worked flawlessly since the day I first plugged it in back in early 2015. Year round. It"s sitting next to me in my truck, on a beach, and keeping a load of food and drinks ice cold. With the knob always pointed at the green light, which I believe is about 1-1/2 out of the 5. Its in like new condition and I even got a top basket for it, to hold the little stuff. I guess I'll report back in about 5-7 years next, though I don't think things will have changed.

The Engel compressor has just one moving part. You really need to enter a search term "Engelcoolers" to fully understand & appreciate the design engineering of the compressor. Scroll to the bottom of the page where you see a description & drawing showing the compressors design & the reason 45 watts is the current draw when running. VAN BATTERY - All I have to power the freezer is the battery in my van, the same battery I rely on to start my van. It is sufficient for 7 days/night to power the freezer 24/7. Nothing else is needed, thanks to the efficient, low-power requirements of the Freezer which is wired directly to the van's battery. I used a magnifying glass to inspect the prongs on the plugs as well as inspecting the female recepticles for scratches. There was NO EVIDENCE that the plugs had ever been used/inserted into anything. I added lock washers to the screws when attaching handles to the freezer. Several screws holding latches & hinges were loose so I tightened them with my phillips head screwdriver. AC & DC POWER CORDS - Do yourself a favor add grommets to a 6 mil ziplok baggie & attach the baggie to the freezer handle away from the compressor. Put the power cords in the baggie. That way you always have your power cords with the Freezer & don't have to go looking for them. FREEZER CONTROL SETTINGS - (1-5 with 5 being coldest) @#3 = 15º; @#4 = 5º. Atmospheric Temperature = 74º inside my apt. CAPACITY - 40 qt which is the equivalent of = 1.33 cubic feet. I preferred this model over the slightly larger 45 qt freezer because of the way the lid opens. I ran my fingers around the lid seal & felt no cold escaping even though the latches seem loose. I also painted a white line on the Temperature Control which help me see the setting in subdued lighting. SPARE FUSES - When you buy the Freezer, be sure to also buy a spare THERMAL FUSE which costs $10.00 for the 12v power cord. I also went to the auto parts store & bought a spare 10 amp fuse for the Freezer. Tape the Spare fuses to the Freezer for that just in case moment. This freezer will be inside my Ford E250 insulated Cargo Van. For now, I'll have it powered by Van's battery when I'm out on a trip, camping or otherwise. I stock the freezer with freezer ziplok baggies containing cooked & prepared portions of omelettes, beef stroganoff, beef stew, thin cut pork chops, thin cut raw rib eye steaks, & a small Tupperware container of ice cubes. The ice cubes are my "acid" test of checking to be sure the freezer is keeping my food frozen 24/7. When I want to eat I take the frozen ziplok baggie out of the freezer put it in a pot of boiling water & in short order have a 5-star delectable, nutritional home-cooked meal. Between the van & this freezer, I have NO NEED for lodgings or restaurants during my trips. SHIPPING/SUPPLIER - I bought mine from BIG FROG MOUNTAIN. I place my order Monday morning. It was delivered by FedEx Friday p.m. It doesn't get any better than that. NOTE: There is no reminder to REGISTER your unit with Engel that came with my Freezer. So I simply went online to ENGEL's website, looked on the bottom of the page & found where I was able to successfully REGISTER my unit with Engel. This Freezer comes with a 2-year warranty, beginning from the date of purchase. Competitors offer a 1-year warranty on their compressors

I bought this freezer so that I can freeze meats and make ice when I'm camping or on my vacant, undeveloped land. I've been traveling with it for the last month or so, and I can say it works great. It'll freeze a bottle of water over night, and is also cold enough to freeze meats. I've run it off of AC, in my car (plugged into the cigarette lighter), and also off a 12V deep cycle battery, and has worked consistently from all power sources. It'll work just fine even in the heat, especially at the highest setting. At night, or if it's cool, you might be fine using a lower setting and save some power. The only downside is its weight, but the handles are sturdy enough that you won't have to worry about carrying it around (hopefully with someone else's help).

I haven't had mine long, but it's impressive so far. Great to have in the back of the truck to keep snacks and drinks on hand and also to bring home cold or frozen groceries without having to hurry much. I measured 40W draw on AC and 2.5A on DC but didn't check the duty cycle (which will of course vary with outside temperature). Also, it's pretty quiet. Pretty heavy, so it's nice to have the one-piece lift out basket. If you're going to load it in a truck it's nice to quickly lift out all the internal weight first.

This is my second Engel, and is just as good as the last one. Good sturdy construction and the low power demand which makes them ideal for 12-volt applications. A standard car battery in good condition can easily run this fridge for 24 hrs and still start the car. I would have liked to see metal handles instead of the plastic ones, or some alternative means of easily securing the unit for off-road situations. Additionally, I think a digital temp display would also be useful. However, I did purchase the Engel wireless digital temperature gauge which can be remotely mounted Engel USA Wireless Cooler Thermometer . Regardless, the fridge is very efficient and is ideal for keeping food and drink chilled, or deep frozen.

Este verano nos íbamos a Alemania de vacaciones con la autocaravana y como sabéis los que tenéis una autocaravana los frigorífico trivalentes enfrían poco en verano y congelan lo justo y encima el conge lar es pequeño. Así que me decidí por una nevera congelador con compresor y no puedo estar más contento. La puedes usar a corriente y a 12v que es como yo la he usado. Te trae los dos cables y un adaptador del enchufe para que pongas el que mejor te convenga. La nevera es de 40 litros suficiente para mis necesidades. No tiene ningún reloj,pantalla digital que nos indique la temperatura a la que está. Solo tiene una ruleta que del 1 al 5 y en función del número que le pongas te enfria o congela. Del 1 al 2 hace de frigorífico solo enfría y a partir del 3 al 5 congela hace de congelador. Yo he comprobado que en el 5 la temperatura a la que estaba era de -22°. Yo lo he utilizado de congelador,hacia comida en casa y la envasaba al vacío y luego al congelador y te entra muchísima comida ya que el compresor está separado de lo que es la caja donde dejas los alimentos. Lo único que podrían mejorar son los cierres los veo un poco débiles pero aún así cierra herméticamente. Apenas hace ruido el compresor y si quieres le puedes comprar una funda térmica para protegerla y también para que el calor exterior no le afecte tanto y tenga que entrar el compresor menos veces y así consuma menos batería que por cierto tampoco consume mucho. Yo estoy encantado la mejor compra que he podido hacer para la autocaravana.

Prime impressioni: Ho imbarcato il frigo come bagaglio (senza alcuna protezione se non una pellicola trasparente) su un volo aereo e mi è stato riconsegnato senza il minimo graffio,se consideriamo come vengono trattati i bagagli la dice lunga sulla sua robustezza. Alla posizione 2(su 5) raffredda egregiamente gli alimenti anche ad una temperatura di 38 gradi. Forse la cura nell'assemblaggio non è poi così eccelsa (made in Thailand se non erro)

Ich habe diese Kühlbox während meiner Offroad Reise durch Schweden permanent im Betrieb gehabt. Sie lief sehr ruhig im Auto während der Fahrt, der Stromverbrauch ist optimal niedrig. Auf dem Stellplatz/Campingplatz habe ich sie über eine Power Station betrieben und dort wo verfügbar war über Netzstrom. Nie hatte ich Probleme gehabt, das evt. die Kapazität der Power Station zur neige geht oder der Strombedarf trotz 30° C zu hoch wäre. Ich konnte sie durchgängig an der Power Station betreiben, Tagsüber mit Solarpanel. Schon auf Stufe 1 immer alles TOP gekühlt.
