You need to push it firmly, with your thumb, to engage it. It disengages easily by squeezing the handles and pulling it out by sliding the thumb over the latch. Although not part of your question, a negative I have with the pruner is this notch should be larger as the latch occasionally disengages while in my pocket. **Q: Bearing action? not understanding. because i do not want a metal spring action. and fiskars has no demo on how these work.** A: I imagine there is a spring inside because the jaws reopen after cutting.
