I had heard brown flaxseed meal had a slightly different nutritional profile and deeper flavor than golden flaxseed meal and decided to try it. The flavor of this flaxseed meal has a nuttiness that is a definitely a bit stronger than golden flaxseed meal. I found the taste stronger, but not unpleasant. However…By the image on the package, you might think that the visual (aesthetic) difference might be slight, because the image shows flaxseed meal that is only slightly darker than golden flaxseed meal, somewhat like a whole wheat color. This is so COMPLETELY inaccurate that it could ONLY be intentional misrepresentation. The color is a VERY dark brown. Further, the packaging is fully printed, not a "window", so you are not seeing the product, only their picture. You cannot tell what the product looks like until you open the package β€” then returning it is not an option (or less of an option).The problem is that any baked goods made with this flaxseed meal WILL be dark. Like "dark rye" dark or "chocolate cake" dark. It's color is dark enough enough to overpower the color of other flours or meals in a blend unless very little is used. This, of course, limits what you make with this flaxseed meal, when the color of the resultant product matters. Chocolate flaxseed one-minute muffins? Yes. Low carb chocolate cupcakes? Yes. Brown bread? Yes. Low carb vanilla bean scones, cinnamon rolls, pancakes, dinner rolls, or biscuits? NO.I knew that what I was purchasing was not golden flaxseed meal. I find it flavor acceptable for my chocolate baked goods and nice for brown bread.
