Review: Great HomeKit Camera, But Aqara Needs to Be More Transparent About Outdoor Installation - I’ve been a long-time Ring user and recently decided to switch to HomeKit Secure Video. After installing the Aqara G100 outdoors, I can honestly say I’m impressed with the camera itself. The image quality is excellent, HomeKit Secure Video setup was extremely easy, and the camera has been reliable. Motion detection has been accurate, HKSV recordings work as expected, and the camera blends in nicely with my home’s exterior. For anyone heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem, this is one of the best HKSV cameras I’ve used. That said, I have a few criticisms that potential buyers should know about. First, Aqara and desertcart need to do a better job explaining outdoor installation requirements. The product description makes it sound straightforward, but there is very little information about cable routing, power requirements, or what to expect for a permanent outdoor installation. My biggest complaint is the included USB-C cable. The camera ships with a cable that is only about 5 feet long. For an outdoor security camera, that’s simply not practical in many real-world installations. Most outdoor mounting locations are nowhere near a power source, and I ended up purchasing longer cables separately. The camera itself appears well protected from the weather, and the USB-C connection includes a silicone protective sleeve, which is a nice touch. However, buyers should plan on purchasing a longer cable before installation unless they have an outlet very close to the mounting location. I also wish the mounting system offered a little more adjustment. It works well for straight-on installations, but it’s not quite as flexible as the ball-and-socket style mounts used by some competitors. Overall, though, the positives far outweigh the negatives. The camera quality, HomeKit integration, reliability, and appearance have been excellent. I would absolutely buy it again, but I strongly recommend Aqara update the product description and include clearer information about outdoor installation expectations and the very short included cable. The ease of setup, image quality, HomeKit Secure Video support, and overall flexibility have won me over. Review: Amazing value - seamless Apple integration - These cameras are awesome! I’ve used Arlo, Blink, and Ring and have felt disappointed by all of them - sometimes it’s the software, sometimes it’s the hardware, but everytime I’ve felt that those brands have lacked in many departments. These cameras are small, easy to mount where you need them, are powered via USB-C so there’s a lot of options opposed to hardwired or outlet required cameras (I use a power bank for a quick portable baby monitor), I never have to worry about battery use, and the integration with the Apple HomeKit was seamless! So much better than proprietary brand apps/software. The picture quality is great with multiple definition settings, which come in handy with different levels of remote connectivity (I.e. poor WiFi, etc.) and the sound is decent as well. Night vision works well!

For the price, and especially for its ability to integrate directly with Apple HomeKit, this camera is a great value. I ended up buying three of them despite a few shortcomings. The image quality is perfectly fine for everyday use. I have no complaints there. For the distances I’m using them at, both the brightness and the night vision perform well enough to clearly see what’s going on. Setup was also very straightforward through HomeKit. The process was quick and painless. My only real complaint is the motion detection. It isn’t perfect. I have a lot of deer and other animals that pass through my yard and the camera doesn’t always detect them. It also sometimes detects my waving flag as a person. So the detection can be a little inconsistent. That said, considering the price and the HomeKit compatibility, it’s still a great camera overall. Even with those quirks, I was happy enough with the performance to buy three.
