The double-cut American pattern teeth on the flat side are for rapid material removal, and the teeth are variably pitched to help reduce chattering and prolong tool life. The spiral-cut teeth on the round side are for fast cutting action with a smooth finish on concave surfaces. The tang can be used with an optional handle for secure gripping (sold separately). Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Too soft. Pferd much better *by K***R on Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2020* This file is way too soft to provide even fair service. I have used hand files extensively for 40 years. Before Simmons and Nicholson moved their manufacturing off-shore, they made very good files. But that is no longer the case. Both brands now sell nearly useless files. Sad really. I made the mistake of giving Simmons’s another chance recently, but was sorely disappointed. At the same time I purchased a Pferd file of similar size and cut. I used them side-by-side on a piece of soft steel. The Pferd cuts and cuts without showing any evidence of dulling—-that’s what a decent file should do. After just a few strokes the Simmons was showing shiny teeth tips(clear evidence of dulling) and not digging into the metal. I guess I just wasted 17 bucks. I hope other folks don’t waste their money too. Simmons’s (and Nicholson) should be ashamed of bilking their customers.
