    Ion profile turntable

*by I***5 on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 November 2011*

This was ordered, delivered, connected, and in use within 24 hrs, all on standard delivery. It came with pre connected phono output lead, and a supplied USB cable. It has instructions on how to set your computer sound input, as PC's default to line in and you need to set it to the USB when the turntable is plugged in. I leave mine connected so don't have to do this each time I want to use it. The supplied software whilst usable, does export straight to iTunes before you have chance to declick and trim the recording, so I have chosen not to use this software. I am using Audacity( which is a free piece of software for recording, and Nero for cleaning) then bringing into iTunes, this workflow works bet for me. The turntable is working very well, it's very stable on its large soft material spring mounted feet, and the arm is quite accurate. The arm does move off its last position when raised, so will remain over the break between LP tracks whilst name and save the prior one. There is slight rumble detectable on the start and end of tracks, ie the quiet bits, but the cleaning program gets rid of this with "noise removal". All in all I have been using it every day now for about 4 weeks and have recorded hundreds of tracks so far ( still got hundreds to go!! ). Had no problems at all and at the price it's just the job.

    Wow - theres too much

Build quality is good, it was easy to set up and the supplied software is OK for most purposes. If you have problem albums that you want to transcribe and do a lot of post processing on there is better software out there but that is still totally compatible with this kit. So far so good. The music played through my PC speakers as I was recording and sounded fine. The finished version when fed though my Squeezebox into the hifi system sounded just about as good as you can expect a scratchy old LP to sound. However, even with the first transcribed album I noticed a few problems with tonality. I put this down to the album rather than the deck. The second however was worse. With each album the amount of wow and flutter increased. By the fifth album, the maximum speed was around 28 rpm rather than 33.3 and that was wildly inconsistent, fluctuating with each track. In the end the deck was wowing like crazy and the sound totally unlistenable. It wasn't even a consistent wow (i.e. a regular speed variation with each turn of the platter) but speed fluctuations that were unpredictable and chaotic. The deck is spirit-level horizontal on a sturdy table on a concrete floor yet sounds like lt's being played on a roller coaster.Clearly there is something wrong with the motor or the belt. The whole lot is going back tomorrow. I will be asking for a like-for-like replacement since I am trusting the other reveiwers and presuming I have just been unlucky and got a duff belt.I will update this review when the next one comes.****************************************************The replacement was prompt and efficient with no quibbles or foot dragging. The new deck is excellent and I have upped my rating from 1 start to 4. The only reason it isnt 5 is because their QA could obviously do with improving if they let a bad one out like that in the first place. But now I must admit the sound quality from even my oldest LPs is much better than I expected.Incidentally if you have some really noisy damaged LPs you want to digitise this is how I get the best results:1 Play them wet. Use a plant spray or atomiser to spray them with a mixture of 500 ml warm water, 2 caps of white vinegar and a two drops of fairy liquid. Spray them 2 or three times per side while you are recording to stop them drying out. Hard debris turns into a suspension which glides past the stylus noiselessly.2. Play them at 45 rpm to speed up the process3. Use a good wave editor to slow the sound back to 33 rpm and clean up the noise. Audacity is good - and free but I find Goldwave to be better even though it costs some money (not much)4. Apply a light pop/click filter to the whole album, select particularly bad clicks individually and use a stronger pop/click setting for these. Dont use the strong settings on the whole album as this will affect the overall sound quality.5. A good trick is to sample the sound of the blank space between tracks. This will have all the rumble, hiss crackle etc of the whole album but not the music. Consequently you can use it with the noise reduction function of your software and have it "subtracted" from the musical parts of the rest of the album. This will remove pretty well all of the background noise without affecting the sound of the actual music. (Incidentally make sure your sample contains no music at all - particularly not the reverb or fade-out of the previous track - subtracting that from the album will take all the life out of the sound).I amm very pleased with the combination of this deck and decent software and have managed to get excellent results from 40 year old albums that were virtually unplayable at one time.

    Oops, I did it again!

*by F***2 on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 February 2014*

Buying this product represents a spectacular 'own goal' for me. My intention was to use it to record all of my vinyl collection and then sell off both it and all of the vinyl to create some much needed space. Now, after a month of (very slowly) working my way through numerous vinyl-to-mp3 conversions, I have reached an awkward conclusion - I like the sound of my vinyl played on this turntable better than I like the sound of the CDs that I have of those same albums! I am, reluctantly, hooked on vinyl again. Damn! So, that's the emotional/irrational part of my review over with.About the product itself, I will only say a couple of things (as so much else has been written already). As expressed already, I found the tone coming from this (rather plasticky) deck to be far in excess of my (very modest) expectations - it really is clear and expressive and able to separate both stereo channels and most instruments in the mix(of rock and pop music). I would warn that the 'audio out' signal is a little brighter/lighter than any of the other components that I have plugged into my amp (CD player, TV, mp3 player etc.), but on an amp with tone controls it is possible to correct this easily with a bit of treble cut and bass boost. Anyone wishing to use this deck as a pure source component with an amp without tone controls may wish to consider having some sort of inline device to control the audio signal (i.e. headphone amp/equaliser). To be clear, this deck is probably not in the same league as the budget hi-fi turntables (Rega Planer etc.), but my feeling is that can't be far off and that it seems to sound more dynamic than the hi-fi turntables that I had in the '80s/'90s.On the recording side, it might be worth pointing out that the process is a little slow and clunky, if you choose to separate the tracks manually and name all of the files (rather than relying on the auto function, which is very easily tripped up by tracks that segue or long pauses in single track). I found that I needed to EQ the files before uploading them to my iPod, so that they played back with a similar tonal balance to the other tracks on there. As with the audio output of the deck, the digital output could (in my opinion) benefit from a bass boost and treble cut). Doing this slows down the process, as it has to be done after the fact. In summary, I usually only manage to get three LPs done in an afternoon, before I tire of it or have to go and do other jobs.At this rate, it may be years before I get all of my vinyl converted. Still, as I said at the beginning, I'm rather enjoying having a vinyl source component again and have even started to ... buy more new records! Oops, I did it again :-( . Once a vinyl addict, always a vinyl addict.Great product for the price and great packaging and quick delivery from Amazon.
