I do not use a comb to detangle, finding the paddle brush kinder to my hair. I brush thru while conditioning. I use a leave-in conditioner, natural styling anad that's it. Even when applying heat the same routine. Do not use the product if you have any doubts. There is no need. **Q: can this undread locked, matted hair?** A: I'm not sure. From what I've seen in my hair, its mostly for tangled, curly hair. For locked or matted hair, that may have to be cut. I don't think any detangler can help locked or matted hair. Please try Avocado Oil or Grapeseed Oil for locked hair. I originally bought this just as a detangler since nothing I've used so far gets the knots out with minimum pain and effort, but it turns out that this is just a great styling product. I've been looking for a long time for a product that relaxes with my frizzy/wavy (with a few curls) hair, and, after using liberal amounts of this product, my hair is smooth and my waves are defined, instead of the usual frizzy mass of hair. Surprised to learn after purchasing that this product is labelled as for 'ethnic hair', whatever that means, don't let that deter you from purchasing this if you have hair on the finer and straighter side.
