Review: Still a Gem - This is one of my favourite films of all time, about a hard headed business woman, J. C. Wiatt, who suddenly has her whole world turned upside down by the unexpected arrival of a baby. When J.C. inherits something in a will from a distant relative, the last thing she's expecting it to be is a baby. Once she has got over the shock, she decides to put the baby up for adoption, much to the relief of her live in boyfriend. But while he is away, she bonds with the child and is unable to give her up. Her partner cannot tolerate a young child in his life, so they break up. However, J. C. finds it hard being able to juggle a demanding career, with the responsibility of bringing up a child and her work begins to suffer. It doesn't help that she has an ambitious co worker after her job, and in the end he succeeds, leaving J.C. with no choice but to resign from her position. Then begins the second part of the film which is totally different from the first, where J.C. leaves New York and moves to Vermont. She starts her own business selling baby food and meets a man, a country vet and settles in to a new calmer sort of life. Then an opportunity comes along that gives J.C. the chance to return to New York, a success. Now she has a hard decision to make. Will she make the right one? Although this film was made in the eighties, it stands the test of time and is still a gem.
