To be honest I haven't had the courage to do this job. The leather hat is brand new and cost me over £90 and I'm a bit frightened of ruining it. I think trying to change red to cream would be a tall order, and it is a dye for leather, not sure how it would cope with vinyl. I use the dye to colour undyed calf leather to match darker brown leather. you can mix the dyes to achieve the correct tone. I also dilute the dye with methylated spirits, and apply with cotton wool, wearing gloves. I have used the leather dye to recolour scuffed shoes too. Obviously, if you were dying a scuff mark, you would not want to get the dye on the surrounding area as it would darken it. You could use masking tape to avoid this and a cotton bud to apply the dye to small areas. Unfortunately I did not receive the applicator and used a sponge instead, resulting in stained hands and nails. I had to resort to bleach to remove the stain.
