I have only used for cold as for heat I'd much rather use a hot water bottle. I baught a few of these to help with Hip Bursitis. Being on the hip, bit of a pain to hold in place but the bag with the large elestic band helps to hold it in place. Personally i have found in the bag doesn't give as immediate releif. They don't seem to last very long either but i think thats down to their thin size, not enough thermal mass. other side if you have more mass it would be heavier and more dififcult to hold in place so i guess it's a good comprimise. With a few of them a just keep swapping them out. Good quality. Comfortable, flexable, Don't leak, Helps with Hip pain to an extent. Review: Huge - but can still be used on a leg or arm - This is a really big plate of cold - as the illustrations show, it can be used on a shoulder, but it's also convenient enough to use on a leg or arm. I'm using it on my calf. It's a bit more fuss to use than a gel pack with strap, because you take the gel pack out of the freezer and put it into a bag before strapping it on. However that means it stays cold for the whole 20 minutes (because there's a fleece on the outside of it), and the straps (one short, one long) are perfect to hold in position with the short one whilst adjusting the long one, then returning to tighten the short one. I've had no end of trouble trying to get gel packs without straps to stay in place, and mostly the straps are too short for anything but an ankle or wrist - these ones are fine. There's also a strap extender which makes the short strap as long as the long one. I'm very pleased with this. For example, wrapped in a towel and placed in a pillow case is makes a fine cool pillow for headaches. And it's big enough to be applied to almost any part of the body. The elasticated Velcro straps to support let it down. The way they're attached means that it's only possible to hold it in the upright position on your back. To hold it horizontally I had to remove and reattach the straps. This works, but they're too flimsy to support the weight of the large gel pack properly anyway, so it keeps sliding down your back. I had to put a body belt over it to keep it in position.
