## Description

Product Description Funky Midnight Mover - The Atlantic Studio Recordings (1962-1978)badass shit! Review "Vocally and personally explosive, Wilson Pickett may have been a gene-splice of James Brown and Otis Redding..." --Spin

Review: But I had a couple of old LPs (Wicked Pickett and Hey Jude) that I went back to and found I really liked both of them all the wa - I've always considered myself a fan of Atlantic Records, so the more prolific artists they recorded have crept more and more into my collection over the years. I had to talk myself into buying this box, because I had the 2 disc set that Rhino/Atlantic released in '92, and I thought that had all the Wilson Pickett. But I had a couple of old LPs (Wicked Pickett and Hey Jude) that I went back to and found I really liked both of them all the way through. So I picked this up, and it is a revelation. The sound really opens up a new appreciation for the voice and expression of this man. He's not been one of my favorites because of his rough edge, but the improved fidelity, particularly on the early stuff, really allows his voice to be revealed in all it's gospel drenched glory. I wrote anything he did before Midnight Hour off, because I thought it just didn't have the right combination of production and songwriting. I was wrong. His early sides may not fully measure up to his prime Stax/Muscle Shoals/Philadelphia period, but it's very close. I thought perhaps 6 discs was just too much Wilson Pickett for me, but again I was wrong. This man was a master soulster, and he brought his magic to almost everything he recorded. I haven't listened to disc 5 and 6 yet, and I suspect that the quality tapers off on disc 5 and disc 6 is really for fanatics, but this set is worth every pretty penny I paid for it!
Review: Evolutionary. Going from the days of monaural 45s to the stereophonic masterpieces of later years. - Wanted hear “DON’T KNOCK MY LOVE” pt. 2 most of all. Unfortunately the rendition included here is at variance with what was recorded on the original 45, which is very much more robust than what is included here. The recording on the album of the same name does not replicate the original pt. 2 track by Dennis Coffey either. Very disappointing. Otherwise this is an outstanding compilation.

This box set rules. IT is a really cool set that is bound like a book.the first 80 pages or so are a book with various people talking about the late great Wilson Pickett (jerry wexler, steve cropper, etc) and descriptions of every song in the set. It says that this contains pretty much everything he ever recorded for the Atlantic label. If you like the real deal '60's soul, then you must own this. Wilson Pickett was one of the kings of soul. I put him ,Otis Redding,James Brown and Sam and Dave in a class by themselves.Great sound quality. This is an overall very high quality product.
