I need to be able to fit an 8" cake pan inside.** A: The crock pot tapers from 9" to 7" on the inside. The only way you could use an 8" cake pan would be to understand you can't set it clear on the bottom. You could possibly set it down far enough into the pot to get the lid on, but I don't know how stable it would be in the suspended position. **Q: Do I have to turn it off myself? I was hoping I could turn it on and come back from work to the meal being done...** A: Yes, you have to turn it off yourself, but it is OK. You can turn it ON in the morning, lets say six in the morning and come back home at six in the afternoon and have a grate food ! You can have it on Low or High and both are OK, because even with High it boils so small that you will not come home to a burned food. I suggest for your first experience, try it on a weekend and see how it works. For me it works perfect ! **Q: Is the lid made of glass** A: Yes. It's glass, with metal trim. Seems very strong and sturdy, though. **Q: Has anyone used this cooker to make yogurt?** A: No - I've only used it to make traditional slow cooker/crock pot dishes. For that it's an excellent choice.
