This is a terrible piece. It is made very poorly. Cheap. I used it for less than a month and sold it at a garage sale for $5. Very displeased. **Q: Do the ground stakes come with it?** A: Yes, it comes with 2 ground stakes. **Q: It says you can put sand in the base, how is that, the base is not enclosed? Puzzled!** A: You can put sand in the pole before you screw it onto the base. It also comes with stakes to secure to the ground. I have been very happy with mine and did not need to weigh it down with sand. The birds love it !!!!! **Q: Can it be painted?** A: I'm not sure about painting it. I would be afraid that the paint could hurt the birds! I do like this bird bath very much and so do the birds. It is actually an oxidized copper green color, with areas of lighter and darker color, which I like very much. The one close up photo of the base in the product description is the most accurate one. Even though it is plastic, it looks almost like metal from a distance. (SEE PHOTOS - Note that the solar water fountain shown is not included with the bird bath). The measurements shown in the product description are a little confusing. It says it is 20”L X 20”W X 30”H. It is actually 19 1/2 inches wide at the top basin, 15 inches wide at the base, and 30 inches high (including the bird statue). It is 27 1/2 inches high, not including the bird. So, I am not sure what the described 20 inches long means. It was extremely easy to assemble, and all the parts fit perfectly. They screw together, so no hardware is needed. The bird just inserts into its base holder. Assembly instructions were included, but I doubt you will need them, as it is so simple to assemble. It is not particularly heavy, weighing just 4 pounds, but I found it to be stable enough, because of its wide base. I suppose if you have strong winds, it could tip over, but there is room inside the lower pole attachment to add some sand to help solve that. The bird sculpture has some detail in the wings and its position is attractive. I haven’t had it long enough to see if attracts any birds. We have a lot of doves, and I suspect they will use it. In the spring and fall we have some migratory birds pass through, so hopefully we will see them use the bird bath, too. For its size and aesthetic value to me, I would say the price is reasonable. (I’m sure the price of shipping is hidden in the cost, though, since the box it was shipped in was so large.) Overall, this is a nice addition to my back patio decor, and I am happy with it. I find it enjoyable to look at, especially with the addition of a solar water fountain. Simple additions like this can aesthetically enhance the experience of having to stay home all the time (like so many of us these days). I have deducted one star because of the inaccuracies in the product description, noted above.
