Review: WONDERFUL, Inexpensive fun. My "big boat" friends are jealous - This is a TRULY great raft/boat, ESPECIALLY for two adults. I used it all last summer (2012) with my wife and other times with my 3 grandchildren ages 7, 7, & 10 & their fishing rod. One reviewer REALLY helped me understand the "total picture" (A.K.A. cost) of owning this boat and all the parts that make it more fun. After rowing a few trips, I realized "no way." This is what I did, with a few mistakes: Bought a Minn Kota Endura C2 30 ($85), a "regular" car battery ($67 & a MISTAKE - read on), rechargeable battery operated air compressor (about $30), a trickle charger for the battery ($21 & it stopped working after 6 months of use). Did you add it all up? Still cheaper than a sailboat, powerboat, or jet ski. Lessons Learned 1) Deep Cycle Marine Battery. Minn Kota Endura recommended Group 27. I got mine via Walmart (May 2013). Minn Kota guided me on this purchase (power NOT brand advise). 2) A deep cycle marine battery requires a "real" battery charger not a trickle charger. Schumacher, manufacturer of battery chargers, walked me through a recommended purchase for the deep cycle marine battery - did not want to damage my new battery. I went with their XCS15 which charges the battery and maintains automatically. I also learned I can use my deep cycle battery, with an inverter, to power my laptop, recharge my mobile devices, etc. during electrical outages or camping. 3) Be selective on your trolling motor. REALLY learn how it works and how it "sucks" power - YOU DON'T WANT TO GET STUCK. Minn Kota now has a new model with power saving features - Endura Max. Make an effort to understand "thrust" so you will not buy MORE motor than you need. Basically the smoother the water ("like oil") the less resistance, the less power you will use. The majority of the time my lake is almost smooth. One time the wind was blowing creating tiny waves, and I did not realize I was using too much trolling power by going at the highest speed of the motor which lead to me rowing BACK for about 2 to 3 hours with a diabetic friend - this was not pleasant. I think he forgave me. :-( But my original (last summer) battery was a small auto battery - I did not know any better. I now have a more powerful (deep cycle) battery which will greatly reduce my risk of getting stuck. 4) Battery Charge Indicator: If I had this originally, I might not have gotten stuck or "trickle" my way back to shore (like I did a few times last summer). I shopped around and Minn Kota has the best price/performance battery charge indicator. I think it was about $14. Finally I have friends with $100K plus boats with ALL the overhead, and they admit they wish they had the "nerve" to use a boat/raft like this model and save THOUSANDS of dollars every summer on their power boat. Personally I just want to relax and "sit" on the water w/o having to "dish out" thousands of dollars and waste time keeping up an expensive power boat and using 1/2 my "boat fun" docking a powerboat, cleaning it, insurance, paying for winter storage, etc. I use that "extra" money and go to the Caribbean on vacation and use my cousin's power boat he maintains - I just pay for his gasoline. Enjoy...it's worth every penny & Intex made it affordable.
Review: Works great but may need tube extenders if running a larger motor - This transom mount kit is excellent and the fact that a simple, easy-to-use transom kit allows you to quickly mount a trolling motor to your inflatable boat for such a low price is nothing short of extraordinary. On my Intex Excursion 5, this mount worked perfectly for a little Minn Kota 30lb thrust motor but I found that motor way under powered. However, when stepping up to a 55lb thrust motor, I found the mount wasn't up to the task in its original configuration due to the motor being twice as heavy and having double the thrust. It worked, but barely, and the mount would buckle under the boat under full power. I was able to make it work somewhat after carefully adjusting the shaft height and angle but the motor still tucked under pretty good and I'm pretty sure I was effectively losing thrust because of the angle of the prop and the fact that it would bob up and down as the inflatable hull flexed. This isn't so much the mount's fault but the Excursion 5 has a very light duty hull at only 1 psi so it doesn't take much to collapse it - this might not happen on an Intex Mariner with higher pressure. This was a very easy fix, just make tube extenders that extend the top tubes from the original mounts all the way to the rear oar mounts. Much more stable now and it was a very easy modification.
