If you slide the metal probe onto the microphone, it increases the length by 5 inches for a total of 11 inches. **Q: Will this find a water leak?** A: If it’s making noise it will...... it’s a listening device so it will find a leak if it has any type of sound. A water leak should be able to be found by eye or using a Uv dye is usaually the best option. **Q: Can you find vacuum, boost or exhaust gasket related leaks ?** A: Smoke machine for boost leaks, try using vacuum hose to probe for exhaust leaks. one end to your ear the other along suspected exhaust leak. Can use carb cleaner to check for vacuum leaks. spray small amount to suspected area. (CAUTION THAT CARB CLEANER IS VERY FLAMMABLE BE CAREFUL) and see if rpm changes. Great device! *by M***H on February 19, 2017* For a long time, a noise under my Jeep got a little louder. It finally got to the point I knew I had to do something or deal with a much more expensive repair. I jacked the car up on stands, had my wife spin the wheels with me underneath with an automotive contact stethoscope listening to the differentials and transmission/transfer case, but never could narrow down the sounds location since it only happened when I hit the brakes and put a load on the bearing, which I suspect were the culprits. THEN, I DISCOVERED THIS FANTASTIC AND AFFORDABLE DEVICE! :-) It's quite sensitive, plugged in the alligator clip mic, then clipped the heavy alligator clip mic onto the transfer case and routed the wires so they weren't touching any moving part. Closed the rear door on the cable and placed the main gun handle mic next to me with it's on/off and volume control. Put one of the two ear plugs in so my other ear could hear the yet to be determined noise. As I thought, it turned out to be a bad pinion bearing in the front differential and a bearing going bad in the transfer case. Where I had spent hours trying to diagnose the problem before, in 10 minutes I knew what the issue was and how to go about fixing it.
