## Overview

Fluval BioMax is a premium biological filter media designed to enhance aquarium water quality by promoting beneficial bacteria growth that reduces harmful ammonia and nitrite levels. Compatible with a wide range of Fluval filters, its complex porous structure maximizes water contact time for superior filtration, suitable for both freshwater and saltwater tanks. Regular partial replacement ensures sustained biological balance without altering water chemistry.

## Description

Fluval BioMax Bio Rings have a complex pore system creating an optimal environment where biological activity can thrive. The BioMax Media Inserts have more capacity than most biological filter media and allow ideal water movement throughout the media, to ensure optimal contact time for efficient biological filtration. With more capacity than most biological filter media, Fluval BioMax Media Inserts help reduce ammonia and nitrite.Fluval first broke onto the aquatic scene in 1975 by introducing the world’s first 3-stage filter with synchronous motor technology – a landmark breakthrough that is still applied in the industry today. Since then, Fluval has built a legacy around this pioneering spirit, relentlessly adapting in a changing world to launch innovative aquarium products that remain at the forefront of technology, and which set the bar in quality, style and functionality. Above and beyond its manufacturing role, Fluval prides itself on its charitable and educational efforts that give back to the fishkeeping community, whether it means helping to fund the protection of wild coral reefs or jumping on a plane to document endangered fish species halfway around the world. Fluval’s mission is not just about building products that mimic the natural world, but inspiring aquarists of all skill levels to enjoy and respect the hobby for generations to come.

Review: Works like a champ and last a long time - Unlike polished alternatives, the Biomax’s rough texture and maze of tiny crevices offer an ideal haven for nitrifying bacteria, creating a thriving mini-ecosystem inside each piece. This translates to faster bacteria colonization, meaning fewer ammonia spikes and beautifully balanced water parameters—a win for the fish and for any dedicated aquarist. And it’s not just the quality; at this price point, it's a serious deal, especially with Prime shipping adding convenience. Pro tip: grab more than expected! Remember to rinse them in aquarium water (not tap water!) to preserve all the beneficial bacteria hard at work. This simple step is key during filter maintenance to keep that beneficial colony going strong without wiping it out. While Fluval recommends replacing these every six months, any seasoned aquarist knows ceramic media is practically immortal. It’s fantastic for seeding a new tank filter, making the cycle period shorter and saving valuable time. The only tiny drawback? They’re a bit bulky, so they might not fit snugly into smaller tanks with compact filters.
Review: Excellent filtration — my tank water is crystal clear! - I absolutely loved this product. It’s exactly what my fish tank needed to keep my fish healthy and happy. Highly recommended for anyone who wants a cleaner, healthier aquarium.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How often should these be changed? I have two Fluval filters, 105, 305 on a 40 gallon breeder tank (used for a turtle and guppies only).**
A: Unless it completely breaks down and crumbles, never. Do not wash in the sink or with tap water as it will kill the bacteria which is the entire point of these. If clogged with physical detritus just shake them loosely in aquarium water in your aquarium safe bucket you use for water changes or cleaning and reuse. They only say to replace so they can make $$$.

**Q: Out of one box which is about 18 ounces, how many gallons of water would this be good for? Simply because I have a 55gal aqaurium**
A: Biological media doesn't go by gallons, I understand it seems like it should, but if your tank is cycled or in the process of cycling this just makes a safe place for that bacteria to live, you'd be fine with one box due to the super high surface area of these rings, but you can always add more if you have space for them, your tank being fully cycled is what really matters.

**Q: How good is the Surface Area for these? More rough=more SA.**
A: They have worked well for my aquarium - still in use - they have a textured surface to hold - I like the product

**Q: Would this filter media work if I put it in a mesh pouch and hang it in the tank? I have a light source so not sure if this would make algae grow**
A: Yes but not as efficiently. Bacteria can easily colonize these rings in a filter because so much waste passes through them. When you just hang it in the tank its like adding extra gravel which the bacteria also colonize but to a lesser degree.
