Review: Good - This is a good Printer/MF device, it excels at everything it does, I gave it 5 stars for what it does. If there were 1/2 stars I would have given it 4.5 for some minor omissions. Your choice depends on what features you want/need. Canon based lasers (hp still uses their engines) last forever because when you discard the Toner cartridge you are discarding the drum and other parts that are likely to fail. Then again when you buy a printer for around $100 this does not matter as much as when they used to cost $1000s or at least many hundreds of dollars. This is a very small well made printer. 10x10x14. In my case this was one of the deciding factors. My wife wanted something as small as possible. Most other printers/MF devices are closer to 20x20x20. Canon themselves make a D420 which has better specs and is currently selling for a few dollars less, but is much larger. Silly Canon did not include the USB Cable. I had one. But unless you buy them from desertcart or monoprice you end up paying silly prices for them (should only be a few dollars). The manual is HTML you can pull up out of a browser. On the PC it installs as a program. As the manual is HTML mac users can copy the manual folder to there computer and open it in their web browser of your choice. I tried firefox first, worked well. Mac Drivers and current pc drivers are on line. The HTML manual is much clearer then the nicely printed setup and quick instructions that are bit to brief for many. Because this MF/printer is so small it good live on almost any desk or near by spot without taking over. If you want wireless printing capability you need to plug the printer into a router, airport express, etc. that supports turning USB devices into wireless network printers. I had routers with the capability so this did not bother me. Scanning always has to be done locally anyway. But network scanning is not an option even with a router that makes the printing functionality wireless (that true for all devices jacked into routers). Really though scanning has to be done locally anyway to feed the scanner. Most of you already know low end laser only come with starter toner cartridges that print in the 400-800 page range. This one is no different. Controls. I would have preferred better controls. Making a copy is a one button affair. But if you want to change settings you have to do a little studying. The buttons are nice and large, there just not enough of them. There functionality toggles. The printers display is a single large bright one character alpha/number display that tells you what your doing. What was really needed was display with at least 10-15 characters and a few more buttons to make the other functionality easier until your familiar. Be careful unpacking its fully assembled but with all the plastic tabs that have to be removed. You have take out the toner cartridge and remove the tabs gently from the printer and then replace the toner cartridge to get the protective tabs out. Over all this is a really good printer and a great value. Some things like the lack of an Auto Document feeder will make the scanner more reliable. Choose this printer if you want a really good compact reliable MF device. I also should point out if you look at reviews this is one of the consistently highest rated device. The only neg review came from someone who had a driver issue on a mac resolved it and never updated his or her rating. There are plenty of mac and cross platform users are using it with out issue. The person that had the issue came before Canon updated their printer drivers.
Review: Nice little printer...great price, great quality! - I'm using this for our different types of computers, which include both Macs and PCs. I was concerned about whether or not it would print Postscript files, but it seems to do a good job on everything I've sent to it. The blacks are very solid, and print quality seems to be good! I wish the wireless version was in my budget, but I'll probably hook this one up to my iMac and share the printer on the wireless network. For the price, I cannot complain. It also acts as a scanner and copier. Truly mult-function. Also, for any artists or electronics designers out there...I'm using this with a product called PnP Blue. You print your jewelry design or circuit board design onto the PnP Blue...it must be a LASER print...and then you iron it onto metal or circuit board material. It blocks off areas of the metal, then you can use Ferric Chloride (available on desertcart or at Radio Shack) to etch the metal. There are many tutorials on the web. This laser printer works GREAT for this type of project. [...] has the PnP Blue paper, and you can get Ferric Chloride here: MG Chemicals 415 Ferric Chloride Liquid Here's a great DVD on how to do it! Metalsmith Essentials: Jewelry Etching on Copper

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is there a warning or some way to tell before it runs out of toner?**
A: Yes. You know when it begins to print poorly, such as printing light or parts of the page missing. When that happens, remove the toner cartridge and gently rock it back on forth a few time. Then reinstall it. That should fix the problem for a short while, but it's best to keep a spare toner cartridge on hand.

**Q: Does this handle generic cartridges well?**
A: Yes it can. I order them from Overstock. Com

**Q: is it wireless**
A: No it is not wireless. However I have software installed on my computer attached to the printer that allows me to print from ipad wirelessly which is great.

**Q: does it scan**
A: Yes, it scans in black & white with the provided software.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ cute little laser printer, works with Macs but there are no instructions!
*by M***E on March 29, 2012*

First I will say that this is a GREAT LOOKING little printer/scanner, I chose it because it is compact and nicely designed, and I thought an inexpensive laser printer would best fit my needs. My printer is mostly idle so inkjets dry out on me, and when I do need to print something it's generally text. Color is a luxury I do not really need. The print quality on text from this Canon is very, very good; much better than similar priced inkjets. Setup was very easy, but if you use a Mac, you are on your own. I will give Mac users a quick rundown on what they need to do: Just follow the instructions until you get to "Installing the Drivers Software (for Windows)". Mac users are on their own from here on. There is an "e-manual" for windows that I did not bother trying to download. You need to go to Canon's website and download 2 drivers, one for the printer and one for the scanner. The downloads contain folders called "guide", but they contain the Windows guide. Install the drivers first, then connect the printer cable (which you already have or remembered to buy), then open a document to print. On the print window you will need to add a printer, the Canon will show on the list if it's plugged in, and choose the model number for 'print using'. For scanning, if you want a printed copy, place the item on the scanner bed, press the right (green) button on the printer, use the up/down buttons to change number of copies, then the green button again. To scan to the computer look in your Applications folder. If you installed the scanner driver there will be a new application called "Image Capture". Drag it to your dock if you like. If you click "show details" there are settings here to adjust scan type, file type, etc. I would have rated this 5 stars if Canon had acknowledged Mac users, it is marketed as being compatible but after that they ignore us. I don't understand why some reviewers complain about it lacking functions that it does not claim to have, this is a very basic, very inexpensive, very cute laser printer/scanner. Or they complain about paper jams (what kind of paper did you use, what condition was it in, how much did you put in the tray....) I paid $90 for this printer and am very very pleased with it. Prices on Amazon change daily so keep checking for the best deal. Update 6/12: I have used the scanner quite a bit now and the quality and ease of use are excellent! Almost worth bumping my rating to 5 stars for the crisp color images I get from scans on this little b/w printer! And I have not yet experienced a jam. .
